Gymnasts Launch SeasonThe gymnastic program at me

Fanwood - Scotch Plains YMCAhas just started its third season.Since the inception of the com-petitive gymnastic training pro-gram, there were three boyspracticing gymnastics, as thegym contained only boys* equip-ment at that time. When the girlswere admitted to the program,they had to Improvise their rou-tines on the available equipmentand before their first meet, weretaken to Elizabeth Turners GymClub to practice their routines onthe equipment on which they wouldbe competing. Since that timethe "Y" has become completelyequipped and had added thefollowing equipment to the gymfloor: uneven parallel bars, lowparallel bars, buck, balance andbeam, 2 light weight mats, chalkbos, new trampoline bed, over-head safety rig, spotting belt,spotting s w i v e l belt, Reutherboard, beat board and new set ofwooden rings. The " Y " has justpurchased a new "Krawitz" bal-ance beam which is Olympicstandard. The proceeds of theOctober 17th rummage sale willbe used to pay for this beam.

After seven months of gym-nastic training, a handful of child-ren were entered in their firstmeet November 1962 at whichthree gymnasts representing the" Y " each won a medal. It was astart and good experience forthem. Since that time, the " Y "gymnasts have won an aggregatetotal of 258 medals, trophies andplaques, 92 of which were firstplace awards. Billy Ruyle. so far,heads the list by winning a totalof 27 awards in spite of a lay-offwhen he broke his leg jumping offa hay stack two summers back,Other top winners are JanetteHunt 32 awards, Ricky Hyman 26

Cliff and HamWilliams have been associatedwith gymnastics for many years,Mr. Williams being a formerinterscholastic champion, HelenSjursen was on the 1948 OlympicGymnastic Team and in the vault-ing event scored second place.She is also Chairman of the Newjersey A.A.U. Women's Gym-nastics and is also on the NationalSub-Committee fo r Women'sGymnastics. She was also oneof the judges for a qualifyingcompetition for the 1964 Women'sOlympic T e a m at Sarasota,Florida.
