• The ACT test score activity has been updated to permit the addition of section test scores as well as the computation of a student’s Superscore.

• The Professional Center messaging tools have an improved design.

Additional assessments have been upgraded and are available as options for schools to consider purchasing as add-ons to the products provided to all schools through the RUReady.ND.gov portal:

• AchieveWORKS Personality Assessment (formerly “Do What You Are”)

• AchieveWORKS Learning & Productivity (formerly “Learning Styles Inventory”)

Funding Available for CyberPatriot Online Cyber Defense Competition

- Tracy Becker, Supervisor, Information Technology Program

Last month, North Dakota Chief Information Officer Shawn Riley announced the availability of funds for NDIT to

cover the registration (a value of $205 for High Schools and $165 for Middle School) for up to 25 North Dakota teams.

As of the writing of this article, there is still funding available for teams.

CyberPatriot, an online cybersecurity competition for middle and high school students, is a National Youth Cyber

Education Program created by the Air Force Association to inspire K-12 students towards careers in cybersecurity or

other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our national future.

The competition, designed for any student regardless of prior cybersecurity knowledge, challenges teams to find

and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems. The competition includes an optional training round

Sept. 9 to Oct. 5 and Oct. 7 to Nov. 6, 2020, with a registration deadline of Oct. 15, 2020.  Don’t delay; sign up today!

Schools interested in taking advantage of funding from NDIT should contact Tony Aukland at [email protected] for more information. Additional waivers are available for all-girls teams, Title I schools, and Service Division JROTC/CAP/NSCC teams. Full program and registration details can by found on the CyberPatriot Website.

The Department of Career and Technical Education is here to assist you during these unprecedented times. Our team is committed to providing you with information and resources that will allow you to continue to teach North Dakota’s students skills that will put them on a career pathway to success.

SkillsUSA Supports Teachers and Students Submitted by Tracy Becker, SkillsUSA Advisor and Supervisor, Trades and Technology Education

4

SkillsUSA has worked this past summer to develop innovative educational resources and new professional development materials that support teachers and students regardless of where learning takes place — in the classroom and lab, at home, or a hybrid of the two. SkillsUSA realizes that teachers are more successful and students are more engaged when they have rich content and meaningful experiences and also know that students and teachers value consistency and need greater support than ever before. The SkillsUSA community is committed to helping students attain the highest level of academic achievement and personal transformation while developing their personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics from the SkillsUSA Framework. SkillsUSA’s Empowering Experiences were created to help students find new ways to connect, engage, and stay motivated around SkillsUSA. Students have shared that through SkillsUSA membership, they are seeing community, growth, and recognition. Each of these themes have been ingrained in the experiences that have been created. Through Empowering Experiences, students will be encouraged to engage in as many experiences as they would like to. Here are just a few of the many experiences launching this fall.

SkillsUSA Spotlight Member of the Month. A toolkit provided to

chapters highlighting a local SkillsUSA leader. Additionally, there are opportunities for those local chapter members to be recognized at the national level. Local chapter toolkit launched in SkillsUSA CONNECT.

The SkillsUSA Gameshow. A national game show for students that is designed around SkillsUSA knowledge and awareness.

Empowered Moments Blog. A blog written by national officers about how they grew in specific Essential Elements on the chapter level through their CTE program and SkillsUSA.

Charge — Chapter Officer Video Series A weekly chapter officer video

series that focuses on developing chapter officers to build stronger chapters.

Empowering Advisor Experiences This fall, SkillsUSA is excited to launch a wide

variety of professional development opportunities for advisors. Whether you prefer instructor-led sessions or web-based instruction, SkillsUSA’s got you covered! You can participate in sessions related to professional membership benefits, Framework

integration, Program of Work, Chapter Excellence Program, and educational resources. We want YOU to be successful!

To view the full schedule of opportunities and register to attend, log into your SkillsUSA CONNECT account, choose Professional Development Opportunities from the Advisor Resources tab or click https://www.skillsusa.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/SkillsUSA-2020-Professional-Development-Opportunities.pdf. All of the Empowering Student Experiences, instructor resources and Advisor Professional Development can be accessed through SkillsUSA CONNECT. The Big Reveal email was sent directly to Advisors early September with instructions on how to create a complimentary account, but if you missed it, login at register.skillsusa.org and click the CONNECT logo for registration instructions.

67th Legislative Assembly Believe it or not, the 67th Legislative Assembly is three

short months away. At this time, it is unclear what the

format of the session will be, whether that is face to face,

virtual, etc. Nevertheless, the Department of Career and

Technical Education is currently working with the State

Board for Career and Technical Education, the North

Dakota Workforce Development Council, the K12

Coordination Council, the Governor’s Office, and other

partners to build its legislative agenda. As that is still being

developed, this article isn’t about what the legislative agenda is, but rather the

legislative process the Department goes through. I will provide a budget update in a

future newsletter.

First, the Department submits its draft budget to the North Dakota Office of

Management and Business (OMB). That budget was submitted in August, following the

10% budget reduction as requested by the Governor’s Office. In addition to the 10%

reduction, the agency submitted several change packages, requesting funding for items

such as new and expanding programs and maintaining reimbursement rates. This

budget will be reviewed by the Governor’s Office and OMB and taken into

consideration when creating the Governor’s Budget. That budget will be released in

early December.

Once the 67th Legislative Session begins, the Department will have an opportunity to

present its budget before the Senate and House Appropriations Committee. The

budget will be heard first by the Senate Appropriations Committee, as CTE started in

the House during the 66th Legislative Session. A budget will be approved by the Senate

and moved to the House after Crossover, which will be February 26th. Once the House

passes its version of the CTE budget, if there are differences between the two versions,

the budget will go to Conference Committee. There, any differences are ironed out,

and a final budget is passed.

The CTE budget will then take effect July 1, 2021 and will provide the funding

necessary to support CTE programs across the state. Please let me know if you have

any questions. As always, thank you for everything you do for our students and our

state.

CTSO Leadership Perspective

My involvement in Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America over the past five years has given me an immense amount of valuable life skills- ranging from problem solving to public speaking to leadership. Family and consumer sciences have provided me with endless opportunities for personal growth and have prepared me for life as an adult. My favorite part of FCCLA is the comradery and networking. I have become a better me because of my involvement with FCCLA.

New DANB/DALE Foundation Education Program - Submitted by Tracy Becker, Supervisor, Health Sciences Education

Career Technical Education (CTE) students in North Dakota will soon have a new opportunity to obtain a quality education pathway toward a dental assisting career. The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) and the DALE Foundation, are developing an Entry-Level Dental Assisting Curriculum framework designed specifically for individuals interested in a high demand rewarding career in oral healthcare. Dental assisting is consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing professions in the country. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics estimates that between 2018 and 2028, there will be an 11% increase in job growth for dental assistants. The need for dental assistants in North Dakota may be even higher. According to a 2017 survey of North Dakota Dental Association,* 92% of the members thought there was a shortage of dental assistants, and 60% planned to hire a dental assistant within the next year. The DANB/DALE Foundation Entry-Level Dental Assisting Curriculum (ELDAC) FrameworkTM includes a combination of DALE Foundation courses, DANB exams, and the potential to earn a number of certificates and a national certification, all recognized by the State of North Dakota. These certificates and certification will be used to document desired outcomes required for success as a dental assistant in a variety of settings. The ELDAC framework includes Master Curriculum Elements for incorporation into an existing dental assisting program or easy integration into developing programs. The course syllabi provided to faculty will include learning modules and suggested learning objectives, laboratory skills, clinical competencies, and evaluation rubrics. The components of the DANB and the DALE Foundation ELDAC framework may be combined and sequenced along a “career roadmap” that reflects state dental assisting requirements and also supports a number of DANB’s national career pathways for dental assistants. The DALE Foundation will offer consulting expertise to provide guidance to faculty and students regarding the use and integration of the curriculum and auxiliary materials to support new or existing programs.

For more information, please contact DANB/DALE Foundation Executive Director Cynthia C. Durley, M.Ed., MBA at [email protected].
