“Burial of the Dead is a Corporal Work of Mercy . . .It honors the children of God, who are temples of the Holy Spirit.”1 The corporal work of mercy of the burial of the dead, and the spiritual works of mercy of teachingthe uninformed, comforting the afflicted and praying for the dead are at the core ofwhat we do each and every day.

Pope Francis has proclaimed this year an “Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.” How fitting it is that, during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we meet in Orlando to share, tolearn and to celebrate our Catholic Cemetery Ministry – a ministry that is entirelybased on Mercy.

The Holy Father calls us “to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we maybecome a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.” During this year we, Christian people and Catholic cemeterians, are invited to reflect on the corporaland spiritual works of mercy, to reawaken our consciences so that we will enter moredeeply into the heart of the Gospel.

The Church’s Funeral Rites – the Vigil, the Funeral Liturgy and the Committal – eachhas a distinct purpose and prayers to help those on the path to healing and wholenessafter the loss of a loved one. God promises to work all things to the good – includingdeath – for those who have loved Him and followed Him. His Mercy is everlasting.God’s ability to forgive has no limits.

Coincidentally, there are seven spiritual and seven corporal works of mercy. So too, there are seven dwarfs! In that spirit, let us have some fun as we regain our focus onthe Works set before us and sing:

“Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, it’s off to His Work we go!”

You can’t control everything in your work environment, but thatdoesn’t mean you’re powerless - even when you’re stuck in a difficult situation. FEATURED SPEAKERS

Wednesday, October 12 - 9:30 am

Most ReverendGerald F. Kicanas, D.D.“Celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy”Bishop of Tucson, Gerald F. Kicanas, D.D., servesas Episcopal Moderator for the Catholic Cemetery

Conference. In declaring this the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, PopeFrancis has made clear his wish that this year “be a living experience ofthe closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so thatthe faith of every believer may be strengthened.” In living this experienceof closeness to the Father, we as Catholic cemeterians have been given aspecific challenge and specific reward: “Rediscover the richness encom-passed by the spiritual and corporate works of mercy” for “the experienceof mercy becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as JesusHimself taught us.”

“Each time one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the JubileeIndulgence” which is a “remission before God of the temporalpunishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven.”

Therefore, there is much work for us to do! Gather your tools, your heart of forgiveness and love for the Father, so that you may gaze into the eyesof the bereaved and grant them the mercy of the Father through uncondi-tional love and forgiveness. Through your Mercy shall the Mercy of Godbe received. Share this challenge with your staff so that they too may experience and share this call for Mercy and enjoy the Indulgence available to us!

Deacon Glenn Tylutki, CCCE“The Magic of Outreach - the Sacred Synergy of Parish and Cemetery”

I have called you to be one of my disciples . . . . You will be known as a Cemeterian!

Unlike “The Kingdom of Disney World,” we as cemeterians are both privileged and called by name to offer to thosewho mourn real actions inspired by LOVE, words of HOPE offered to comfort, and our confident FAITH in His promise of eternal life.

The local parish provides for the community of believers as they gather and practice their Catholic faith in this world - a sacred place. Yourlocal Catholic cemetery provides for that same community - a sacred place as they await the resurrection from the dead.

Learn how to successfully combine the energies of the ministry of your Catholic cemetery and the local parish by creating an outreach pro-gram for those who mourn or are pre-planning their burial needs. Their peace of mind is God’s gift to us, for we are called “to serve ratherthan be served.” Deacon Glenn is the Outreach Coordinator for the Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago, Archdiocese of Chicago. He is a popu-lar and regular presenter at many of the CCC educational venues.

Brandon Vogt“New Media, New Evangelization”Sparked by Pope Blessed Paul VI, fueled by Pope Saint John Paul II, and continued by

Pope Benedict XVI and Piope Francis, the New Evangelization is a call tospread the Gospel with “new ardor, new methods, and a new expression.”This talk introduces the New Evangelization and shows how the newmedia fits in.

“Secrets to Evangelizing Online”This practical talk reveals the keys to evangelizing to the world ofFacebook, YouTube, Twitter and blogs. You will learn several sure-fireways to spread the faith online and get your message out. Vogt is aCatholic author, speaker and new media expert who works as the Content Director for Bishop Robert Barron’s Word on Fire CatholicMinistries. In 2011, Brandon was invited to the Vatican to dialogue with Church officials about new media.

Michael Marchand“New Media Mixer”A series of fun activities to help you learn more new media and at the same time meet

fellow attendees. Marchand is the founder of ParishDesigner.comand the co-creator of ProjectYM.com (a collaborative youth ministry resource).

Matthew Warner“Turning Your Web Presence Into a Social Network - Connecting with Your Flock”Learn how to begin building your own online com-

munity and making social media work for you. You will discover specifictips, tools and techniques to help you get started right away including theuse of email, text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, blogging, video andmore. Warner is a full time CEO of Flocknote.com and a prolific blogger. He holds a B.S. in Engineering and an M.B.A. in Entrepreneurship.

“The Most Important Question You’ll Ever Ask”Matthew Warner and Josh Simmons help you examine the answer to thisquestion and determine whether your online efforts succeed or fail. Thissession will help you clarify your mission and determine what you needto do to accomplish it.

Josh Simmons“How to Create a Website that Will Transform Your Cemetery Ministry”Your Website is the first, and possibly only, impression

that people have of your cemetery ministry. What impression are youmaking on those visitors? Uncover the Dos and Don’ts of creating adynamic Website. Simmons is the founder and CEO of eCatholic, one ofthe largest providers of Catholic websites in the country. He also workedas a Youth Minister, Director of Faith Formation, and Music Minister.

“Sacred and Safe - The Corporal Work of Mercy in Today’s Society” Ever since the sacred body of Jesus Christ was reverently laid in thetomb, the Catholic Church has declared that its burial grounds aresacred places. As we continue the corporal work of mercy of buryingthe dead and caring for the Communion of Saints resting in our ceme-tery grounds until the time of the resurrection, we are obligated to cre-ate and preserve a place of dignity, peace, tranquility and sacredness.

It is often necessary to establish and promulgate Rules andRegulations that will protect the sacredness of our cemeteries.Additionally, Catholic cemeteries MUST provide a safe environment forvisitors as well as staff, volunteers and others working in our cemeter-ies. Catholic cemeteries need to be sensitive to the bereaved by provid-ing a sacred place that allows for visitation and prayer undisturbed.

The goal of this session is to examine “best practices” of Catholic cemeteries to provide these safe and sacred grounds for those weserve. Cemetery rules should not be something fixed in time but forever changing, evolving to meet the needs of a changing societywhile maintaining our Church’s teachings.

“The Greening of Cemetery Ministry — Pope Francis on ‘Care of Our Common Home’ “

“LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” - “Praise be to you, my Lord.” These arethe words that open Pope Francis’ encyclical on ecology and care forGod’s creation. Quoting St. Francis of Assisi’s beautiful canticle, PopeFrancis reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whomwe share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms toembrace us. This session will explore what Catholic cemeteries can doto respond to Pope Francis’ summons to “every person on the planet”to address the “ecological crisis” facing the world today. We bringtogether a panel of experts to discuss sustainable practices for ceme-teries focused on conserving energy, land, and water.

Pope Francis asks, “What kind of world do we want to leave to thosewho come after us?” This question is at the heart of this encyclical andrightfully calls us all to work harder against the challenges the humanfamily faces today. May we help answer Pope Francis’ call in receivinghis message and growing responsibility toward the common home thatGod has entrusted to us all.
