Financial success connected to marriage?
by Josh Montez
In the most recent list of the Forbes 400, the wealthiest Americans, all of them are billionaires. And there’s another simi-larity; most are married.Ignore those bumper
stickers that read, “Driver carries no cash; he’s mar-ried,” because the fact is studies show being married has financial benefits. Jenny Tyree with Focus on the Fam-ily says hers and other family groups have been saying that for years.“Family experts have
long recognized the fi-nancial benefits of mar-
riage, calling it a wealth creating institution be-cause both the married and their children reap from both the tangible and the intangible ben-efits of marriage.”She says it’s simple:
marriages keep families out of poverty.“One family expert has
said that avoiding pov-erty requires three things and marriage is essential to two of those: finishing high school, marrying before having children and marrying after the age of 20.”Mike McManus with
Marriage Savers thinks
one reason is a married man has a reason to work and succeed.“A man who has a given
education and is married will earn 10-40 percent more than someone with the same education and is single. And I think the reason is that he works harder to support his family. He’s got an in-centive. He’s got a child at home or a wife who’s pregnant. The Forbes 400 has a
30 percent divorce rate as opposed to the widely publicized 50 percent di-vorce rate of the general public.
Robert F. Purdy, 75, of Aitkin, died Wed., Oct. 3, 2007, at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.
Services were held Mon., Oct. 8, 2007, at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin with Rev. Judith Clark officiating. Burial was
in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Nordland Township, Aitkin County.
He was born Oct. 9, 1931, in Modesto, CA to Emmett and Francis (Gobble) Purdy. He married Adeline Sjodin on June 15, 1951, in Carson City, NV. He worked as
Robert Purdya building contractor since the mid 1060’s until his recent retirement.
He is survived by his wife Adeline; sons and daugh-ters-in-law: Richard (Cindy), Midland, TX; Rob (Shanna), Aitkin; daughters and sons-in-law: Terri Kautz, Gold-field, NV; Karen (David) Stauffer, Aitkin; Vicki Rhodes, Aitkin; Jean Purdy (Brian Wright), Inver Grove Heights; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grand-daughter, and his son-in-law Judge Robert E. Kautz.
Arrangements were with the Sorensen-Root-Thomp-son Funeral Home of Aitkin.
