October 14th Program

Peggy Martin began quilting in 1981, piecing and quilting everything by hand. A few years later,

when quicker methods were being discovered, she became hooked on finding faster, easier ways

to make quilts. When she began teaching in 1985, she continued to develop more streamlined,

fast, fun methods of working. She enjoys expanding on traditional quilts with new variations and

color-play. Her favorite quilts are those which are fast, easy to piece, and offer many design

possibilities.

Peggy has been presenting programs and workshops at guilds and seminars since 1988. She was

selected as Professional Quilter's Teacher of the Year in 2010. She is an award-winning quilter and

has exhibited in many national shows. She lives in San Diego, California and is married with two grown sons.

2010 Quilting Teacher of the Year I am honored to have been selected as Professional Quilter's Quilting Teacher of the Year for 2010!! It is very gratifying to be

nominated by my students for the second time, and even more exciting to be the winner of this honor. I always try to create a

warm, relaxed atmosphere in my classes, where students can learn and explore their own creativity while still having fun! A

big thank you to all my students over the years - I have enjoyed and appreciated each and every one of you!!

Beyond Tradition

Expand your creativity by using traditional quilts as a springboard for design inspiration. See how one idea leads to another,

making one small change at a time to come up with totally new ideas and looks. Traditional quilts and the more contemporary

ones that result from going one step beyond will be shown and discussed.

Boo! Happy Halloween!

Don’t forget to show your ghoulish outfits at the

October meeting, wear orange or something

Halloweenie and receive a raffle ticket for a chance

to win a treat. Beware! My friend Hazel Wetts might

be at the meeting to perform some Halloween tricks

to all who choose not to dress in the holiday spirit.

Also, remember to bring Halloween themed

projects for show and tell….let’s get our members in a

Halloween mood.

At the October meeting, Robin Tetef, Peggy

Fatur, and I with let you in on our new fundraiser for

2014. Project: UFO 2014 will benefit you on getting

projects done and benefit one lucky winner and

SFVQA by the end of the project. Tune in for details.

September was a busy month.

Lynn Mann, a great workshop, a great lecture and

a great quilter. Thanks, Program chairs for

sharing Lyn with our Association.

We had our SFVQA New Member Tea at Shirley

Vangerov’s house…FABULOUS! Thank you to

Debbie Sornborger and Sandy Jewett for

doing a great job.

SFVQA had two mini group start up dates…WOW!

Thanks to Susan Wiebusch for putting it

together.

Veteran’s Quilt Workshops

Hello everyone. There are just two more Veteran's Quilt

workshops left this year. If you are interested in helping us,

come to the VA at Woodley and Plummer and join us in the

Recreation room from 10-3. We tie quilts or sew tops,

whatever you would like to do. All the materials are provided

for tying. We will NOT be meeting in December. For more

information, call Karen Van Den Brink.

Ways and Means

Hello from Ways and Means,

The delighted basket winners from our Septembers meeting

are:

Mirror Mirror won by Ellen Lowe

Here Comes Halloween won Susan Van Dof

I Love Fall won by Sylvia Irene

You Are Special won by Sylvia Irene (double

delight)

Thank you for the fabric, books and quilt related stuff donat-

ed to Ways and means. We do have a need for any tchotchke

or knick knack type of items to round out future opportunity

baskets. Our circle of happiness as Ways and Means makes

baskets of opportunity from your donated treasures. See you

all next month in front of the soda machine.

WHAT IS A "UFO"?

What is a UFO? (Unfinished Object) or NFUFO? (Nearly

finished UFO) or how about BBUFO? (Barely begun UFO)

and then there is WISPs? (Works in SLOW process).

Whatever you call them we'll bet you have several hidden away

in your sewing room, perhaps in a brown bag? A specially

purchased zippered plastic tote?

Robin Tetef and Peggy Fatur would like to challenge you to

finish them. Watch for the "SFVQA UFO Challenge". Rules

will be presented in the next newsletter and at the October

meeting....start getting them together!

Membership

We extend a warm "Welcome Back!" to Faye Ayers.

If you did not pick up your roster at the September meeting,

please pick it up at the Membership table.

Please note in your blue roster Leslie Gellerman's correct

phone number, 818-383-0057.

Hospitality

A reminder for the October birthday quilters, it is your turn to

bring the desserts, fruit or vegetables to our meeting. If there

are any leftovers, be sure to pick them up after the

meeting. Also, if any of you are away during your birthday

month, please feel free to bring desserts to any other meeting.

Thank you,

Special thanks to Nikki Modugno

For those who attended the September meeting heard that

Nikki Modugno had to resign her position as the SFVQA

treasurer due to health issues. Nikki has taken care of us

(SFVQA) for a long time but, now it’s time for Nikki to take

care of Nikki. It was a very hard decision for Nikki to make

and she struggled with it. Nikki has a strong and caring

family that will support during her recovery and we hope to

see her at meeting in the near future. Please, send her note or

give her a call and give her a little “SFVQA LOVE”.

Thank you, again to Michel Sharp for stepping up as interim

Treasurer. Michele is very groovy for helping us but, keep in

mind we need to find a permanent treasurer. So, it you are

interested please contact myself, Kathy Milbrand or Jan

Lawson.

Veteran’s Day Meeting

November’s meeting will focus on the men and women who

put their life on the line for the freedom we as USA citizens

enjoy every day. Karen Van Den Brink will have a beautiful

display of veteran quilts and the wonderful awards the

Veterans project has received over the year.

Please join in creating a 12 ½ “ square block to donate to

create a quilt for a returning solider. The block can be any

design, red, white or blue or any combination, it just has to be

a 12 ½ inch square block. Make at many as you wish. Turn

your block at the October or November meeting.

Everyone, let’s see how many blocks we can make. For every

block you turn in you receive a raffle ticket for a chance for a

prize.

Q4O: October 30th

The regular meeting of Quilters for Others is the last

Wednesday of the month. For October, we will meet Oct 30

from 10-3. The place is St. James Presbyterian Church

at 19414 Ventura Blvd, Tarzana, just west of Tampa on the

south side of the street. We welcome you to help tie quilts,

bring us unfinished tops and we will complete the

process. Any one is welcome to join us. You may bring your

machine, but we will have the necessary materials for tying the

quilts. There are fast food venues nearby, but of course you

may bring your own lunch. We value your time and spirit to

help us. Bring a friend.

For guild members, we welcome donations of unfinished tops,

batting or even your "why did I buy that?" cotton fabrics. You

may give us your orphan blocks as well. We make placemats as

well as baby quilts and those larger quilts. The race is on to

finish what we start. Thank you for your support. Linda

Deckard, Sheila Gee, Jan Lauritzen, Jan Livingston

Save the date:

Sunday, October 6, 2013: Chatsworth Historical Society

Pioneer Day at Chatsworth Park, 11-4

We will have a booth with our quilts displayed and an

opportunity to tell about our philanthropy. This is our chance

to show our wares and to explain to the youngsters how quilts

are made.

We expect about 100 young people will be interested to glue

the 1 ½” pieces of fabric to their grid and “make” their own

quilt.

We will need lots of people to help us with the crowd control

and the smooth running of the activity. Many of the kids are

repeats, and it is fun to watch their creativity processes.

Any time you can give us will be more than welcome. PLUS

there is always a lot to see at this annual event set in

Chatsworth 1867 era. Early CA at its best.

Call Hannah Almstead (818) 784-4612 for last minute details.

Doll Quilts

It's that time of year again! The S.F.V. Woodworkers are hard at

work creating doll cradles and other handmade toys donated to

needy children at holiday time. They are so thrilled with our

past contribution of doll quilts, and the popularity from the

recipients, they decided to increase their output to 225 cradles

this year. With the Valley Quiltmakers Guild we have already

collected 185 quilts, and we would love to see every doll in

every cradle wrapped in our little quilts. If you have something

going now or the time to take it on, please use your scraps and

skills to make quilts about 18 by 24 inches. This is a great

opportunity to try out that new pattern, use up your remnants,

and feel the satisfaction of a completed project for a very

worthwhile cause. The blankets can be quilted, appliqued,

knitted or crocheted as you and your friends desire. I will

gladly receive your items at our meetings (I'm usually in the

lobby with the Library) or I will arrange to pick them up from

you. We have until Nov. 15 to hand them over. Many thanks in

advance for your generous participation.

SPACER BORDER © 2000

TO MAKE YOUR PIECED BORDER FIT YOUR QUILT YOU PROBABLY WILL NEED TO ADD A SPACER BORDER. TO FIGURE THE WIDTH TO CUT THE SPACER BORDER, MEASURE THE LENGTH OF THE PIECED BORDER AT THE EDGE THAT ATTACHES TO THE QUILT. THEN MEASURE THE LENGTH OF YOUR QUILT DOWN THE CENTER. SUBTRACT THE QUILT FROM THE BORDER AND DIVIDE BY 2 (YOU HAVE TO SPLIT THE AMOUNT BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES.) THEN ADD ½” FOR SEAM ALLOWANCES AND THIS IS THE WIDTH YOU CUT THAT SPACER BORDER. IF YOUR QUILT IS SQUARE, THE SPACER BORDER WILL BE THE SAME FOR ALL FOUR SIDES. HOWEVER, IF YOUR QUILT IS RECTANGULAR, YOU MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT WIDTH SPACER BORDER FOR THE SIDES (LENGTH) THEN FOR THE TOP AND BOTTOM (WIDTH). SO YOU WILL NEED TO MEASURE BOTH LENGTH AND WIDTH AND MAKE TWO CALCULATIONS AS ABOVE. THE BORDER WIDTH THAT YOU ARRRIVED AT FOR THE TOP AND BOTTOM IS THE WIDTH YOU CUT THE SIDES BORDERS. AND IN TURN, THE MEASUREMENTS FOR THE SIDES GO ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM. REMEMBER YOU MUST ALSO DETERMINE HOW LONG TO CUT THESE BORDERS AND MATCH YOUR QUILT AND BORDER AT FIRST AND THIRD QUARTERS AND IN THE MIDDLE AND SEW WITH THE QUILT TO THE FEED DOGS.

BLOCK PARTY _ AUTUMN LEAVES (9̂ ^ block) — DUE OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER 2013

Leaf fabric: deep, rich jewel tones in fall colors. Cut three squares 4" x 4" and three squares 3i/2" x 31/2"

Background: warm cream/beige/off-white tone on tones (no puire whites). Cut two squares 4" x 4" and two squares 3i/2" x 31/2"

Half-square triangle units: (for T block)

* Place one 4" colored square and one 4" background square right sides together. Draw a diagonal on the lighter side. Stitch a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the diagonal. Cut apart on the drawn line. Open each unit and press seams to the darker side. Trim each half- square unit to 3i/2", keeping the seams on the diagonal.

/J

Repeat from * to make a total of four half-square triangle units..

Stems: Cut a \ bias strip from the remaining colored square. Sew the strip into a tube, right side out, with an 1 / 8" seam. Insert a bias bar, or other 1 / 4" firm strip, and press seam to the back to make a 1 / 4'' stem. Applique the stem diagonally down the center of one of the backgroimd squares.

Join the units in rows of three and then join the three rows to create the leaf block as shown. Be sure seams lie in opposite directions when joining the rows. The stem must be appliqued onto the bottom background square before joining.
