Dear Editor:

The recent cases of E.coli related illness andsubsequent shutdown ofthe XL Foods processingplant in Brooks, Alta.,clearly show the need toaddress issues of foodsafety, and food process-ing and distribution.

In ongoing AlbertaParty conversationsthrough our Big Listen“kitchen table” conversa-tions over the past threeyears, Albertans haveconsistently shared con-cerns regarding foodsafety. Based on theseconversations, we recog-nize the importance of

supporting consumersand the agricultural com-munity by rebuildingand supporting localfood production andprocessing.

Any problem at a largeprocessor has huge con-sequences for consumersand producers. Local

solutions can put agreater focus on health, food security, traceabilityand accountability. It iseasier to trace sources ofcontamination withsmaller processors andcontain the problem.

XL Foods, Food Safety and Distribution

I have always had a great respect forall the men and women who sacrificethemselves for others, like fire fighters, police officers, the military and others.

After this past week, I have gottenmore respect yet for the fire fighters inour county. They are all volunteers, andtake many hours away from being withtheir loved ones to protect everyoneelse. The training that these men andwomen do on their own free will isincredible to me.

I volunteer for many organizations, but for the fire fighters of the county tovolunteer to rush out at the drop of ahat and help those in need, shows thetype of person that they are. Whether itis a fire, a vehicle accident, or any othertype of emergency they drop whateverthey are doing and go.

They give up time from their families, with their kids; get up out of deadsleeps any hour of the night, and leavework all to rush to our needs. This isamazing to me, and shows that thesepeople are incredibly generous.

Fire Prevention week is about becom-ing aware of safety with fires, but to meit is also about honouring these menand women. However I do think weneed to honour these men and womenall the time, and I would like to saythank you to all of them within theLamont County for doing what they doand being who they are. Thank you.

Members of Lamonttown council met withrepresentatives of theLamont & DistrictAgricultural Society onOct. 4th.

Both sides met in coun-cil chambers to discussthe two possible optionsof reaching a long-termagreement for payinguser fees for rental oftown facilities for events.

Coun. Gail Hrehoretsstated she was glad tohave had the opportuni-ty to have open dialoguewith ag. society mem-bers, and was anxious tosee what they will donext.

"The ball is in theircourt," commented coun.Mike Brown.

The last time the twosides met was on Aug.23rd. At that time discus-sion centred around thesame issue. According tominutes from that meet-ing, Mayor Skinner stat-

ed: "Both sides have towork from the sameagreement. Since theyare different, these agree-ments cancel each otherand any other precedingagreements no longerexist. We will be workingtowards a new and onlyone agreement which isbeneficial to bothersides."

Ag. Society PresidentGrant Cossey stated thatthe ag. society requiresno agreement with thetown itself, but theyrequire a 15 year agree-ment in order to be ableto access grants. Theagreement that is cur-rently in place is a com-fortable agreement forthe ag. society andwould like to continuewith this agreement."

Mayor Skinnerreminded the ag. societythat there are no agree-ments currently in place, and would like ag. socie-ty to pay user fees justlike everyone else whouses the facilities.

Cossey replied that itwould be unfair for thetown to charge user feesto the ag. society giventhe amount of moneythey put back into thecommunity. "To becharged a user fee for thefair would be unfair forwe are not the only clubthat is involved," pointedout Cossey.

He also said that itcosts the ag. society$80,000 to host the fair.Council requested theag. society to provide afinancial statement out-lining income andexpenses.

Cossey wanted toknow if the town wasn'thappy as to how the fairwas run?

Skinner replied: "Thetown is very happy withhow the fair was run, butwe have to justify to ourtaxpayers and otherclubs as to why youdon't pay user fees thesame as they do."

Skinner continued bystating: "The town is

more than willing to pro-vide the ag. society witha 15 year agreement andguarantee the daysrequired for their func-tions. However, you willbe charged user fees forthose dates except for thefair, since this is an eventthat is not solely an ag.society event. The feescharged to the ag. societywill be as per the existingfee schedule which isreviewed yearly.

"The tennis courtwould be a onetime feeof $1,000 for storage useonly, and must be prop-erly secured and nothingcan lean against the fenceand must be kept cleanand free of grass andweeds."

Cossey asked the townif it would consider halfday rental rates, and wastold that would have tobe discussed further.

Cossey said he wouldtake the informationback to the rest of themembers for their feed-back.

Negotiations continue between Town of Lamontand Lamont Agricultural District Society

Town of Lamont put in a new sidewalk acrossfrom IGA next to the Tea House, as well as somenew approaches to some of the back lanesaround town, including the ones behind CIBCand Lamont Grocery.

Lamont High SchoolLINKS teacher Erin Bartzrecently received theCarmelo Amelia-McCawaward from the AlbertaTeachers Association'sSpecial EducationCouncil. Bartz is the pri-mary teacher for theLamont High SchoolIndividual Program Plan(I.P.P.)

This award recognizesa team who provides evi-dence of a successful, effective program in spe-cial education. Theaward consists of $1,000and a certificate and isprovided to the school tosupport the continuedimplementation of theprogram. Bartz has beenworking as the LINKSteacher in Lamont since2006, and is also highly

involved with manyextra curricular activitieswithin the school.

Bartz emphasized thatthe most important thingto understand with herwork is knowing thateach child is at a differentlevel of learning. Each ofher students have theirown specific needs, andit is important to remem-ber what those needs are.

"Some of them havetoo much anxiety to beput into a regular class, and they wouldn't wantto come to school. As faras I can tell, they lovecoming to school. Itwouldn't be fair to themainstream teachers tohave to differentiate. Each kid in here is attheir own level, to havethat in a regular class-room, plus the main-stream kids, it would betoo overwhelming. You

wouldn't be effectivelyteaching them."

Bartz builds her pro-gram so that she, and herother team members can

effectively "stretch" thestudents, and help themto grow both throughtheir learning and asindividuals. She explains

that while at times, thekids may feel uncom-fortable, everything theydo is something sheknows they can eventu-ally succeed in.

Bartz explained thatL.I.N.K.S stands forLearning IndividualNeeds Knowledge Skill. This means that all workis individualized to thestudent according to theI.P.P. as set by the parentsand teachers who workvery closely together toachieve the best learningapproach for each child.

Along with workingclosely with the parents,Bartz also works withthree educational assis-tants who help ensurethat the class is as safeand efficient as it can beto help each student suc-ceed. "It allows for[when] the student needsto get up and go for a

walk, they can safelyleave the classroom andgo for a walk," Bartzadds.

As opposed to otherclassrooms, the LINKSroom is set up very dif-ferent. There are plants, afish tank, puzzles, aswell as tables and chairsinstead of desks. Bartzexplains that everythingin her room serves a pur-pose. "Their science isthe plants, they are learn-ing about plants androoting them, and thefish help them learnabout animal care. It'sencouraging them thatthis is not just a place forlearning."

"There's more to schoolthan just learning. Itsabout relationship build-ing - building trust."

If one company hassupply or contaminationissues, this does not shutdown an entire foodchain as we have seenwith XL Foods, whichprocesses more than4,000 cattle a day – one-third of Canada’s beef.Consumers would bebetter protected andallowed more choice inwhere their food comesfrom.

This also serves to pro-tect the rural Albertanswho raise the cattle, whose livelihoods havenow been jeopardized bythe inadequate food-safety practices of onelarge company - not to

mention the XL workerswho are losing wagesdue to the plant shut-down and the impact onthe town of Brooks.

Responsibility for foodinspection falls on thefederal government, butthe Alberta governmentcan play a role by creat-ing a system that allowslocal producers andprocessors an opportuni-ty to provide healthy, secure food to local con-sumers. We don't sug-gest smaller processorsreplace the large ones, but that local optionsonce again find a pres-ence in our food produc-tion and distribution sys-tem.

Skate Canada hasmade some changes tothe existing Canskate/Learn to Skate pro-gram, and LamontFigure Skating Club isnow offering this pro-gram.

The Canskate programis a program for all kidsto be able to join, andlearn the basic skatingskills needed to either gointo figure skating, hock-ey, or just learn to skate. This program is basedaround three mainthings, being balance, speed, and agility.

The last time that therewas any changes madeto the teaching styles ofthis program was in1998, so Skate Canada

decided it was time to doan update. They havechanged it so that nowthe skaters move around

to different stations ofdrills set up on the ice. These drills include skat-ing forwards, back-wards, stopping, glidingetc.

The skaters then prac-tice on a ‘circuit’ for 10mins. each, then rotate toa different circuit. Thehope with this change isthat the skaters will becontinually moving, aswell as get more time on

the key elements oflearning to skate with acoach.

Lamont Figure SkatingClub has been able tomake this change, asthere is a training coursethat the coaches have togo through. LamontFigure Skating clubcoach has done the train-ing, and they are in theprocess of organizingthis new system. “We areconfident that the pro-gram will continue tothrive as we all learnmore about the programand the opportunities itwill bring to our skater,”says LFSC secretaryMelinda Fedyniak.

The program is offeredTuesdays and Thursdaysat 5:45 at the LamontArena.
