from the desk of father johnThis Sunday with our Gospel reading taken from the Gospel of Mark, our first reading from the First Book of Kings, the Responsorial Psalm being 146, and the second reading from the letter of Paul to the Hebrews all come together and provide a message that is custom made for Stewardship Sunday. But in the Archdiocese of Toronto their Stewardship Sunday is not on this Sunday but on September 19th, and the Archdiocese of St. Louis had their Stewardship Sunday on September 26th. To be honest I do not know when our Archdiocese is having Stewardship Sunday this year, I tried to Google it, but was unsuccessful. Back in the 1990’s under Archbishop Sheehan there had been a big focus on Stewardship Sunday, but as we entered into the new millennium the focus on Stewardship Sunday seemed to wane.Basically, Stewardship Sunday in a Diocese is a Sunday in which the members of the Diocese are encouraged to reflect on how they are helping their Parish and the Diocese with their time, talent, and treasure. Normally the Sunday Masses would include a homily focused on Stewardship and supporting the Church. It would be common to have parishioners fill out pledge cards in support of the Parish. The focus of Stewardship Sunday from my point of view seems to be more focused on the treasure part of Stewardship and less on time and talent. The first reading this Sunday is about the Prophet Elijah helping the widow of Zarephath and her son survive the famine, and the Gospel reading has Jesus informing his disciples that the poor widow who gave to the temple gave more than others for she gave from her want and not from her surplus. Be it the widow of Zarephath or the widow in the temple, they both gave of their want, and both are blessed by God. Add a responsorial psalm that sings the praises of God and a second reading that speaks of the fact that Christ gave of himself for our salvation, the readings seem perfectly designed to support a message of giving of

time, talent, and treasure. But there is something more to this week’s readings, and it can be discovered in message that Christ shares with His disciples about the widow in the temple giving of her want and not her surplus. Christ points out to His disciples that the widow different from the others giving to the temple for she does not give from what is leftover, she gives from her need. This widow in the temple along with the widow of Zarephath are fully committed, they are in a manner of speaking, all in.Today we can see coaches, teachers and even parents encouraging their charges to be fully committed to the task at hand, be it the sport they play, the course they are taking or the family outing they are on. This message that the children of our community hear in a number of ways in their daily lives is a message that we are all presented with today. Are we ready to be like the two widows in our readings this Sunday who are completely committed to the path they are on and are willing to give of themselves to continue this path? People who are on a team or are part of a group might be asked if they are all in, if they are committed to the path, the journey they are on. This is a question considering the readings this Sunday we should be asking ourselves are we all in as followers of Christ, are we willing to give of ourselves to continue our journey with Christ? Be it a coach, a teacher, or a parent they are looking at the ones that they are responsible for and are encouraging them to be totally committed to the task that lies ahead. Be it a game, a class, or a trip, it will be difficult or even impossible for the task or journey to be completed if one is not fully committed. Christ today is asking each one of us, as His followers if we are ready for the task that is before us? Are we ready for the journey that lies ahead of us? Christ is asking us are you all in?—Fr. John

By purchasing Smith’s Gift Cards through the parish, you can buy groceries or toys and even other gift cards and there is no added cost for you. For example, if you buy a $200 gift card, you can spend $200 at Smith’s with the card and IHM youth ministry will receive 4% back from Smith’s. You can order any amount from $20 on up. It doesn’t cost you anything, but the benefits add up quickly for us. All proceeds go to youth ministry activities such as retreats, conferences, and mission trips.
