Usually, throwing a 300 game at your opponent in the
title match is good enough for a win, and thats what hap-
pened in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday, Sept. 30. But this
title match involved two 300 games, and set the stage fora possible televised grudge match in Las Vegas in
November.
In Bangkok,
two-time PBA
Tour title win-
ner Mike
Fagan of
P a t c h o g u e ,
N.Y., started
the champi-
onship match
of the PTT
World Bowling
Tour Thailand
2011 event
with a 300-211
victory over topqualifier Jason
Belmonte of
Australia. But
Fagan needed
to beat
Belmonte twice in the double-elimination finale, and it
didnt happen. Belmonte returned the favor, defeating
Fagan, 300-205, in the second game to win the title and
one million Thai bhat (US$32,000-plus).
With his win, Belmonte earned 50 points and moved
past Finlands Osku Palermaa into third place on the WBT
points list to set up the possibility of a showdown match
with bottlegate rival Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., in
the World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the PBA.
Rash is second in WBT points heading into the Australian
Masters, the final qualifying event in the series. Finlands
Mika Koivuniemi has locked up the No. 1 berth in thethree-player stepladder finals, but if Rash and Belmonte
remain one-two, they will meet in the first ESPN-televised
match of the 2011-12 season.
The mens and womens WBT Finals will be contested at
South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in Las Vegas
on specially-constructed arena lanes on Thursday, Nov. 17,
and will air on ESPN on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. ET.
The Thailand tournament was the next-to-last WBT
qualifying event and featured a strong PBA Tour presencein addition to Fagan and Belmonte. In the opening three-
player stepladder match, Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga,
N.Y., fired a 227 game to tie Thailands Peerawich
Rungacharoen, and then eliminated the Thai bowler, 10-6,
in the one-ball roll-off. Rash was eliminated in the open-
ing match with a 214 game.
In the second three-player showdown, Ciminellis 278
overpowered Sayed Al Hashemi of UAE (245) and Choi
Won Young of Korea (238). Ciminelli then ousted Dan
MacLelland of Saginaw, Mich., 280-258, before losing to
Fagan in the semifinal match, 234-214.

ARLINGTON, Texas - The 2015
United States Bowling Congress
Open Championships is headed to
El Paso, Texas, marking the first
time in a decade the tournament
will travel to a brand new host city.
The 2015 event will be the 112th
edition of the USBC Open
Championships, which has beenheld in 48 cities in 26 states since
its inception in 1901. The last time
the tournament ventured to a new
city was 2005, when it was held in
Baton Rouge, La., also its first visit
to Louisiana.
Surveys show that many Open
Championships bowlers like to see
new cities, and the 2005 event fea-
tured a sellout field of 13,222 five-
player teams.
"The city of El Paso really rolled
out the red carpet for the bowlers
and staff during the Women's
Championships in 2010, and we'reexcited about being able to return
with the Open Championships in
2015," said USBC Executive
Director Stu Upson. "The event
has been to many different places
over the years, and it will be great
to add another amazing city to the
list."
After a successful 2010 USBC
Women's Championships at the El
Paso Convention and Performing
Arts Center, the city of El Paso
made a strong proposal to hold the
2015 Open Championships in the
same venue. The offer was accept-ed with the full support of the
USBC Board of Directors.
"The venue in El Paso played a
huge role in the history of the
Women's Championships as the
event's first convention-center
build," said Brian Lewis, USBC's
Managing Director of
Tournaments. "Along with the
Intercollegiate Team
Championships, Queens and other
events, our previous stay in El
Paso couldn't have been any
smoother, and we know our return
to El Paso will be another suc-cess."
"Hosting the 2010 Women's
Championships was a very special
and rewarding opportunity for El
Paso, and we look forward to
showing the Open Championships
competitors what The Sun City has
to offer," said Bill Blaziek, general
manager of the El Paso
Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"We learned a lot last year, and we
hope to make USBC's next visit
even more memorable."

PBA DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
NAMED IN HONOR OF MARK ROTH,
MARSHALL HOLMANBy Bill Vint - PBA
The 2011 revival of the PBA Doubles Championship will be named
in honor of two PBA Tour legends Mark Roth and Marshall
Holman - who stamped their names all over the doubles competition
back in its formation days.
Roth and Holman teamed up to win PBA Doubles Classic titles in
1977 and 1979 in San Jose, Calif., and again in 1984 after the event
moved to Showboat Lanes in Las Vegas. The PBA Hall of Fame leg-
ends, who own a combined total of 56 PBA Tour titles, bowled as
doubles partners 13 times, cashing 11 times, making match play 10times and finishing in the top five six times.
"How could you not want your Hall Of Fame doubles partner and
great friend to share the name of this event with you? It's perfect,
Roth said. I asked Marshal to bowl with me in our first doubles
tournament because he was a tough cookie and he knew how to win.
We won three times together during our career. Marshall and I talk
frequently, and sharing memories of those events is something we
often talk about. Its a great honor for both of us.
Im absolutely honored, Holman added. Its a beautiful thing.
The revival of the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles
Championship will be a part of the 2011 PBA World Series of
Bowling at South Point Casino, Hotel and Bowling Center in Las
Vegas Nov. 4-20.
The doubles event will include the top 16 players after qualifying
rounds in the PBA Exempt Players Championships who will be
paired for an eight-team Baker format finale based upon how they
qualify. The top qualifier will be the first to select a partner fromamong the remaining 15 players. If he/she selects the No. 11 seed,
the No. 2 qualifier will pick next. If No. 1 picks No. 2 as a partner,
the No. 3 qualifier will be the next to select, etc. The Baker format
finals will be conducted on specially-constructed lanes in the South
Point Arena on Sunday, Nov. 20.

NATHAN BOHR REPLACES STEVEN BLACK
AS PBA EXEMPT TOUR PLAYERFor the second season in a row, Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan., has moved
into the ranks of PBA Tour exempt players, this time due to the withdrawal
of Steven Black of Huntington Beach, Calif. Black, who qualified for his first
PBA Tour exemption through the 2010 PBA Regional Players Invitational,
requested and has been granted a deferral until the 2012-13 season.
Bohr, 31, is a former Team USA member, Wichita State University bowl-
ing star and winner of USBCs 1999 Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow award.
The 10-time PBA Regional title winner was the next player in line on the
2010-11 competition points list. For the 2010-11 season, Bohr replaced Steve
Harman of Indianapolis in the exempt player ranks after Harman resigned his
exemption.
STRONG PBA CONTINGENT COMPETING FOR
WORLD BOWLING TOUR IN THAILANDAfter a strong showing in the DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open
in Busan, Korea, last week led by PBA Tour star Tommy Jones emotion-
al victory over top qualifier Parker Bohn III - many of the PBA Tour stars
traveled to Bangkok where they are competing in this weeks PTT World
Bowling Tour Thailand 2011 event.
The Thailand event, which ends Friday, is the next-to-last qualifying tour-
nament in the 2011 World Bowling Tour series. The final qualifier is the
Australian Masters Oct. 10-22 in Sydney. At the conclusion of the Australian
Masters, the top three men and top three women in WBT points will advance
to the World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the PBA which will be con-
tested at South Point in Las Vegas on Nov. 17 for delayed telecast on ESPN
on Sunday, Dec. 4.
Heading into the Thailand tournament, reigning PBA Player of the Year
Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich., was the runaway WBT mens points
leader followed by Sean Rash, Osku Palermaa and Chris Barnes. Womensleaders were Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Kelly Kulick and Swedens Nina Flack.
PBA Tour players who bowled in Korea were Jones, Bohn, Rash,
Koivuniemi, Barnes, Rhino Page, Mike Fagan, Jason Belmonte, Wes Malott,

REMO PICCHIETTI DIEDRemo Picchietti, a USBC Hall of Famer and one of the worlds leading
authorities on bowling lane maintenance, died on Sept. 26 after a lengthy ill-
ness. He was 81. The former mayor of Bannockburn, Ill., was chairman of
the board and president of DBA Products Co. before it was sold to
Brunswick.
Picchietti never intended to play a prominent part in bowling. As a law
school graduate, he planned for a future in law and politics, but when his
father died suddenly in 1959, Picchietti took the helm of the family business
founded as Deerfield Bowling Academy in the early 1940s - and never
looked back. DBA researched, developed and sold every imaginable lane
maintenance product, and Picchietti became a leading authority on the sub-
ject, traveling the world to teach proprietors and coaches the intricacies of
lane maintenance.
Picchietti also volunteered his services to the sport in a variety of roles: as
president of the National Bowling Council, Billiard & Bowling Institute of
America, National Association of Independent Resurfacers, Tech-Ed
Publishing Company and the International Bowling Museum and Hall of
Fame. And he found time to serve his community as a city judge, council-
man and, later, 16 years as mayor.
STERN NIXES A WORLD SERIES RETURN TRIP
FOR SCOTT THE ENGINEERScott "The Engineer" Salem of the Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM radio
will not get the chance to better his 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling per-
formance. Salems request for time off to return to the WSOB was turneddown on the radio show this week.
Salem, an avid 59-year-old league bowler in New Jersey, grabbed a lot of
attention for surviving the 2010 WSOB. He had never before bowled 60
games in five days and finished in 222nd place short of his goal of finish-
ing in the top 200 but he recorded his best round in his final round, finish-
ing 2nd on the Shark lane condition.
