Buck Wilson Regains Beaver Co. (Pa.) Championship The Beaver County (Penna.) Tournament held at the Van Buren horseshoe

courts in Vanport, Pennsylvania, revealed a few surprises for spectators and pitchers alike.

Featured in this year's tournament was a Beaver County Women's Horseshoe Pitching champion. For the first time and for the year 1968 the champion is Marsha Rainbow of Center Township. Gaining the runner-up spot was Debbie Genevie of East Rochester.

Various surprises also were evidenced in the various men's divisions. In class A, which decided the Beaver County men's champ, Buck Wilson of New Brighton, the 1964 champ, ended a four year drought by regaining the 1968 men's championship. Very close behind and all with only one less win in the twelve men class were second place finisher Jack Rainbow, father of the county women's champ and also from Center Township, third place Frank Peluso of New Brighton and fourth place Larry Hineman of Aliquippa. All four received trophies, with the second through fourth place tie being broken by a percentage computation.

Pete Vlaehos of Bridgewater virtually ran away with Class B as he scored a personal high average ringer percentage. Clyde Nesselroad of Ambridge finished second in the class.

Class C was taken by Leroy Weigel of Vanport. He edged William Carter of Monaca who won the runner-up spot.

Message Of Grateful Thanks From Ralph E. Dykes, Recipient Of Arch Stokes Memorial Award

At the closing ceremonies of the World's Horseshoe Pitching Tournament at Keene, New Hampshire, the night of August 6, 1968 I was awarded the Arch Stokes Memorial Award. I considered this as the greatest moment in my 30 years connected with the game of Horseshoe Pitching. I feel highly honored to be selected as the recipient of this award and shall cherish it the rest of my life.

Having known Arch Stokes for many years, it was very gratifying to have this honor bestowed upon me, and to join the elite group of the 10 previous winners of this award.

I must give two people credit for helping me to be able to achieve this award, for their untiring efforts of giving me a helping hand when needed. These two people are Jack Stout of Melrose Park, 111. and my wife Dolores.

I want to thank the Stokes family for making this award possible, and may "God Bless You."

Sincerely yours, Ralph E. Dykes

News Digest Editor Pays Visit To "Horseshoe U" In Florida

After seeing that his daughter was enrolled in a secretarial school at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Ellis Cobb, editor of the News Digest, stopped at St. Cloud, Florida to take care of some other business and then continued on over to Plant City making a stop at the Plant City courts, later dropping in at John Rademacher's office to deliver some material for Bob Pence, NHPA secretary. However, he missed John, who had just left for Tampa.

Arriving ahead of the "winter" semester, all of the "students" had not come down from their summertime abodes, so as a result, there were not too many on hand. Bob LaValleur, and Bernie Mulhern were busily engaged warming up their pitching arms. Jack Ellis, Joe Kelly, Horace Kemp, Larry Shelly, the 11-year-old protege of Hal Porter, also present in the clubhouse, were engaged in a friendly game of cards.

Taking to the courts, your editor, played a game with LaValleur, followed with a game with Jack Ellis and then threw a few shoes with the young pitcher, Larry Shelly. To Cobb's surprise, this young lad really could toss the ringers and will be one of those to be reckoned with in a very short time.

The staff photograher of the Bradenton Herald arrived with the assistant sports editor, James Rathberger after which a few shots were taken for the paper. An informal discussion was had with Porter, Jack Ellis and Rathber-ger, with many points in horseshoe being talked over.

The Bradenton club is very fortunate in having at its helm such men as have been mentioned above, as guiding forces in horseshoe in Florida. Much credit is due Hal Porter, as the publicty man working in close harmony with the sports staff of the Bradenton Herald, who take such a deep interest in promoting the sport in the southern region.

Seguin, Texas Mayor Dedicates Courts — Burgess Wins Sauerkraut Open

The first annual sauerkraut open horseshoe tournament held in Seguin, Texas will be hard to beat, by any club, anywhere. Lake Placid Club members Bob Pittman, Floyd Bass, Buck Weaver, J. Powell, Bubba Schievelbein and Chris Schmidt put in many hours of work, worry and planning to bring the tourna-ment to Texas horseshoe pitchers and the response by NHPA members and the local population in the Lake Placid area was worthy of their efforts.

Success of the tournament was assured before competition even started by the visit of Seguin Mayor Alfred Koebig to dedicate a new six court layout of the Lake Placid Club. A crowd, which numbered close to 100, was on hand to welcome the mayor and witness the dedication ceremonies.

Mayor Koebig charmed the audience with an easy manner and his genuine display of interest in the new sport that had come to his city of Seguin.

The mayor officially dedicated the courts by cutting a red ribbon that was stretched across the gate entrance, and by pitching the first two horseshoes on the new courts. After the ceremonies were completed, Mayor Koebig was presented with the pair of brand new Ohio shoes used in the dedication.

The homemade sauerkraut and country sausage served throughout the two day tournament was delicious. While the men pitched for trophies, the wives of the Lake Placid Club members spent long hours at the serving line.

Tournament wise, State champion Marvin Burgess did his bit to impress the large turnout of spectators from the local area by winning the top Class A event. The results of the win by Burgess, and other class winners, are shown below.

3Jtt jMstnorfom Irwin P. Carlberg, 54, of 4095 Rememberance Rd., Walker, Michigan,

passed away suddenly at Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich. "There comes a time for all of us When we must say goodbye But faith and hope and love and trust Can never, never die.

Although the curtain falls at last Is that a cause to grieve? The future's fairer than the past If only we believe.

And trust the Creator's eternal care— So when on us he calls Let's say that Life is still more fair Although the curtain falls."

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ethelyn) Swanson of Grand Rapids, and Miss Margaret Carlberg, at home; four grandchildren, Kevin, Karen, Kimberly and Keri Swan-son; a brother Earl of Comstock Park and a sister, Miss Helen Carl-berg of Washington, D. C. Funeral services were held at the Halle-beck Chapel of the Hollenbeck-Oele Mortuaries, with the Rev. Virgil Swanson, officiating. Interment was made at Rosedale Memorial Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Irwin Carlberg was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitcher's Association, and The Wolverine State Horseshoe Pitcher's Association. He served several years as the executive secretary of the W.S.H.P.A. His most notable contributions, and they were many, included the revival and sustaining of interest in horseshoe pitching activity and interest throughout the state of Michigan.

Mr. Carlberg won the Michigan State Class A horseshoe pitching championship in 1956. He was a perennial contender from the early 1950's, until his untimely death. Carlberg's greatest moment, pre-sumably, was his being presented the Arch Stokes Memorial Award at Keene, New Hampshire in 1965 by the National Horseshoe Pitch-er's Association.

His wife, Bernice, and surviving members of the Carlberg family can be assured with the promise that the memory of this fine hus-band and father will live in the esteemed memory of the N.H.P.A. and W.S.H.P.A. organizations that he so faithfully served.

The sympathy and condolences of these people are extended to the Carlberg family in their lonely hour of sorrow.
