Initiative (JEDI), Id like to welcome you to theOctober 2014 JEDI Plenary.

JEDI has been holding plenaries for 19 years and each plenary is an opportunityto build relationships between Aboriginal people and industry. The JEDI Plenary isdesigned to bring together all of our partners for a day that informs and empowerspeople while growing new and existing partnerships. Todays plenary is no differ-ent, as our theme is Moving Forward Together: Strategic Partnerships to AdvanceAboriginal Economic Development.

Encouraging positive relationships between industry and Aboriginal people resultsin more career and business opportunities for Aboriginal people while helpingindustry achieve their goals in a way that respects Aboriginal people in New Brun-swick. As recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions have confirmed, Aboriginalpeople must have their say on what economic development activity occurs in NewBrunswick.

Aboriginal people want to be partners with industry and good things can comefrom the right partnerships.

JEDI is pleased to welcome Phil Fontaine as our keynote speaker at todays plenary. Hewill share his insight on building positive relationships between industry and Aborigi-nal people and how these relationships can benefit everyone involved. We will alsohear some New Brunswick examples of great relationships and the lessons learnedfrom creating those relationships. JEDI is also pleased to welcome the many exhibitorsat our trade show, including Aboriginal businesses and community representatives.

JEDI is proud to celebrate 19 years of working closely with our partners to achieve

our vision of full Aboriginal participation in the New Brunswick economy and wedlike to thank our sponsors of todays event: RBC, CCNB, NBCC, and St. Marys RetailSales. We are pleased that JEDI has chosen to host their Plenary in Wolastoqiyik territoryagain. St. Marys First Nation is a proud community of over 1800 people and man

y ofthese people are attending the plenary today.

We expect that the day will be full of interesting and engaging discussions sur-rounding the theme Moving Forward Together: Strategic Partnerships to AdvanceAboriginal Economic Development. Our community values the partnerships it haswith diverse groups of businesses, organizations and various levels of government.

St. Marys First Nation is a vibrant centre of economic activity. We have some of thelargest businesses in Fredericton. In fact, these businesses and the people they

employ represent hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars to the New Brunswickeconomy. In addition, St. Marys First Nation, has a rich history and dynamic culturewhich is an asset to the city of Fredericton and the province of New Brunswick.

We are also pleased to welcome Phil Fontaine, the former National Chief of theAssembly of First Nations. We are sure that his keynote speech on strategic partner-ships will not only inform us but also provide many points for future discussions.

On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the citizens of Fredericton, I amdelighted to extend a warm and sincere welcome to everyone attending the JointEconomic Development Initiative (JEDI) Plenary on October 1, 2014 at the DeltaFredericton Hotel entitled: Moving Forward Together: Strategic Partnerships toAdvance Aboriginal Economic Development.

Economic development is a key component to the future success of all c

ommunitiesacross this province and country, and I know that JEDI has been at the forefront offostering Aboriginal economic development initiatives here in New Brunswick formany years now.

I applaud your efforts to further develop the strategic partnerships needed to ad-

vance such initiatives. Undoubtedly the keynote by Phil Fontaine, former NationalChief of the Assembly of First Nations, will be informative, and the panel discussionwill provide interesting insights into building positive relationships between indus-try and Aboriginal communities.

The Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI) is a not-for-profit organizationthat supports Aboriginal participation in New Brunswicks economy.

JEDI began in 1995 as a forum that brought together leaders of First Nations com-munities and organizations in New Brunswick with leaders from the Governmen

t ofCanada, the Government of New Brunswick and New Brunswicks private sector inan effort to improve economic and workforce development opportunities for First

Nations in New Brunswick. Since 1995, JEDI has been active on its mandate and nowoperates as an independent not-for-profit organization that boasts many successesin Aboriginal economic and workforce development.

JEDI is funded by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), AboriginalAffairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), the New Brunswick AboriginalAffairs Secretariat (AAS), Employment and Social Development Canada and the NewBrunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour (DPETL).In addition to government funding, JEDI also receives support from the private sec-

tor as well as Aboriginal communities and organizations. JEDI is governed by a JEDIInc. Board of Directors consisiting of Aboriginal, private sector, and funding partners.

Programs under the management of JEDI include: the JEDI Aboriginal Develop-ment Fund (JADF), the Provincial Aboriginal Employment Coordinator Partnership,the Aboriginal Adult Learning and Apprenticeship Coordinator Partnership, youthinitiatives such as the Aboriginal Internship Program (AIP),the JEDI/Brunway BursaryProgram and the Aboriginal Workforce Development Initiative (AWDI).

JEDI works with partners to foster economic and work force development for Abo-riginal people and communities.

Vision

Honoring traditional values, we strive for full Aboriginal participation in the NewBrunswick economy.

JEDI is committed to working cooperatively with all stakeholders to achieve thismission and vision. The strengths of JEDI include strong stakeholder commitment inan open forum; credibility; longevity; a proven track record; recognition as a goodpartnership model nationally and JEDIs position as a non-political organization.

Speaker: Phil FontainePhil Fontaine is a Special Advisor of the Royal Bank of Canada and Norton Rose.He serves as a director for numerous private and public companies including NextAlternative Inc., Chieftain Metals and Avalon Rare Metals. Mr. Fontaine served asNational Chief of the Assembly of First Nations for an unprecedented three terms.He is a Member of Order of Manitoba and has received a National AboriginalAchievement Award, the Equitas Human Rights Education Award, the D
