Josef HAYDNThe Creation Julia Kleiter, soprano (Gabriel, Eva);Maximilian Schmitt, tenor (Uriel);Johannes Weisser, bass (Raphael, Adam);RIAS Kammerchor; Freiburger Barockorchester / Ren Jacobs (conductor)

It was on a visit to London in 1791 that Haydn heard several of Handel's oratorios at Westminster Abbey.Astonished by their size and power - "Handel is master of us all," he is said to have declared - he determinedto write a similar work himself. Die Schpfung was the result, though its exuberant hymning of the simplejoys of life is pure Haydn.Five years after a much-acclaimed version of The Seasons, Ren Jacobs chooses this 'beginning' to make hismajor contribution on record to the celebration of the bicentenary of Haydn's death. This luxury packageincludes Creating the Creation: a film by Nayo Titzin on the making of the recording, Ren Jacobs discography, full texts in English, French, German

CONCERT REVIEWS:"Julia Kleiter was the exemplary soprano, who made Jacobs's extra vocal embellishmentssound completely natural, and Maximilian Schmitt gave notice of a well-schooled tenorvoice to watch." Financial Times, January 2009

"In the medium-scale acoustic of the Barbican Hall, two German groups - the 40-strongRIAS Chamber Choir and the similarly sized Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, both under theskilled hands of conductor Ren Jacobs - proved near ideal. Many of Haydn's delightfultouches of audio-visual detail - the sun and moon, the birds and beasts - came over withunusually vivid effect...Julia Kleiter's pristine vocalism moved around the soprano part withthe same delicacy and skill as Maximilian Schmitt's around the tenor's." George Frideric HANDELTrio Sonatas Opp. 2 & 5Academy of Ancient Music / Richard Egarr

Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music conclude their award-winning Handel cycle with thisdazzling traversal of the Trio Sonatas of Opus two andfive. These works, less frequently heard than much ofHandel's output, are brilliantly crafted, exciting, andabove all, fun pieces of chamber music. The Italianatesinging style of the melodic writing is both virtuosicand sonorous. Handel took Corelli's 'sonata da chiesa'model and with consummate ease, created sparklinglydiverse and richly colourful works that are clearlystamped with his own unique stylistic signature.

As a conductor, Richard Egarr has presented a wide range of repertoire - from Baroque opera and oratorioto works by 20th -century composers. He is Music Director of the Academy of Ancient Music, with whom hehas recorded Bach Harpsichord Concertos and Brandenburg Concertos. Together they are currently releasing a series of Handel's Opp.1-7, of which the Solo Sonatas Op.1, the Concerti Grossi Op.3 and OrganConcertos Opp. 4 and 7 are already available.

Composer, organist, organ builder and teacher of international renown, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) was known in his own time as the 'Orpheus of Amsterdam'.Among his significant contributions toFranco-Flemish polyphony, one finds both psalms in French which closely follow the dictates of theReformation and sacred vocal works in Latin, among which the Magnificat is outstanding.

The sopranos are tightrope walkers on the eternal, steadyhigh note, staggering their breaths for a seamless sound. The held, unresolving clashes are thrilling, a torment one never wants to end.Ligeti's Viola Sonata, the Drei Phantasien, offers similar pleasures wherethe tenors push singing close to shouting in the mighty fortissimo." A journey into Chopin's world . . . On 21 February 1842, the Polish composer gave one of his very rare con-certs: he did not enjoy appearing in public, for his music was above all a chamber art.Alain Plans has strivento recreate the programme of this concert as closely as possible and recorded it on a Pleyel piano of 1836that the composer might have played. The questions he throws up in the process are fascinating: how didChopin play? Apart from his famous rubato, what was the role of ornamentation, and indeed improvisation?

TCHAIKOVSKY 1812 Overture,Moscow Cantata, Marche Slave,Coronation March, Danish Overture Mariinsky Orchestra, Soloists & Chorus /Valery GergievDSD recording, Mariinsky Concert Hall, 15-20 February 2009

Following two highly acclaimed recordings of Shostakovich, the third release on the Mariinsky Theatre's newlabel features a selection of popular and rarely-heard works by Tchaikovsky.Unlike the majority of his Russian predecessors,Tchaikovsky's fame meant he received regular commissionsfor new work - he was the first 'professional' Russian composer.A new generation followed in his footstepsincluding Stravinsky and Prokofiev; for them, commissions were the norm. Many of the works for which Tchaikovsky was commissioned were required to celebrate great state andpolitical events. The Danish Overture was written to mark the marriage of the future Tsar Alexander III tothe Danish Princess Dagmar. He was later commissioned to to produce the Moscow Cantata andCoronation March as part of the celebrations to mark Alexander's coronation. The patriotic Marche Slave was written for a charitable concert staged to raise funds for Russian volunteersin the Serbo-Turkish War.Although the 1812 Overture depicts Russia's earlier war with Napoleonic France, the piece was actually commissioned for the opening of the Christ The Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.Thecathedral itself was built to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Russia's victory in the 1812 campaign of thewars. The next release from Mariinsky, due in December 2009, features the first recording of Rodion Shchedrin'sopera The Enchanted Wanderer. LSO Live has recently released Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle and in January 2010releases Gergiev's eagerly anticipated new recording of Prokofiev's complete score for Romeo & Juliet.

As well as her legions of fans across the globe, Katia's friends and admirers in high places rangefrom Madonna, who cites her as one of her "favourite pianists in the world", to Miles Davis, who dedicatedtwo songs to her on his 1985 album You're Under Arrest ('Katia Prelude' and 'Katia').In addition to experiencing considerable success as one half of classical duo The Labque Sisters, Katia'sseemingly endless enthusiasm for new music has led to past collaborations with artists as diverse as Sting,Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. "Based on a taoist tale (Prince Peiwoh playing a wondrous harp, whose stubborn spirit should be tamed butby the greatest of musicians), this album represents a breathing-in of various traditionswhich have helped me to create and give expression to my musical world, and one of the sources on which Ihave drawn most deeply is early music and the art of improvisation: an infinitesource of inspiration. From the time that I began to compose and sing songs, it became more and more natu-ral to me to accompany myself on the triple harp, and I was fascinated by the depth and subtlety of the ItalianBaroque harp. It has a rich, enveloping sonority which is unlike that of any other harp. There are moments onthe album when we hear a small Gothic harp, with its warm, remote and yet direct sound; and the mostancient of them all is a Celtic harp, with its magical, ancestral sounds.Peiwoh brings together the various languages, colours and sounds that I heard as a child growing up inSwitzerland, at home with my parents, friends and other musicians. And each of them expresses and encapsu-lates a different part of myself. Each language has its own rhythm and melody, which it modulates in its owndistinct way, influencing and inspiring the character and style of the song. Poetry is one of the essentialaspects of this musical journey.Peiwoh leads us to the process of maturing, which has sometimes been painful and dramatic: life containswithin it "little deaths", as in the poem by Garca Lorca (Song of the little death). In his short but intensepoemMy heart, die or sing, Juan Ramn. Jimnez shows how music and life overcome fear, giving us thecourage to walk on, as if our awareness of the proximity of death gave us a heightened awareness of life andits infinite possibilities."Arianna Savall

    CELLO CONCERTOS

Robert SCHUMANN Cello Concerto Op. 129;Richard STRAUSS Romanze AV 75;Robert VOLKMANN Cello Concerto Op. 33;Max BRUCH Kol Nidrei Op. 47

    Daniel Mller-Schott (cello);NDR Sinfonieorchester / Christoph Eschenbach

On his latest CD, Daniel Mller-Schott devotes himself to the cello's Romantic and late-Romantic solo concerto repertoire. It is a voyage of exploration that offers things both known and worthy of (re )discovery. After the Classical period, the cello fell out of fashion as a concertante instrument. When that changed againin the mid-19th century, it fascinated composers more than ever, and this in turn had an impact on their creative muse. For Robert Schumann, to be sure, the composition of his Cello Concerto was bound up withmajor disappointments - he himself did not live to hear its world premire. But the concerto's interplaybetween soloist and orchestra is exciting, as are its contrasts between discretion and impulsiveness, and it istoday well-loved by both audiences and interpreters and a firm feature in the repertoire. The dramatic aspect of the music comes as much to the fore here as it does in our recording of theConcerto by Schumann's contemporary Robert Volkmann. It is considerably less popular than Schumann's,but it thrives on singing, melodic themes and their sophisticated elaboration. These two concertos are com-plemented by two shorter pieces: Max Bruch's Kol Nidrei after Old Hebrew melodies, whose rich musicalspectrum is savoured uninhibitedly and to the full by Daniel Mller-Schott, Christoph Eschenbach and theNDR Symphony Orchestra. Then there is the Romance in F Major for cello and orchestra by Richard Strauss, who despite his youth (he wrote it when 19) already offers us a hint of the originality of his later tonepoems.

    Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICHString Quartets Volume 5No. 11 Op. 122, No. 13 Op. 138, No. 15 Op. 144Mandelring Quartet

With Vol.V the Mandelring Quartet completes the fifteen stringquartets of Shostakovich. Highly praised in the press as one ofthe outstanding complete editions of our time, the last volume presents the Quartets Nos. 11, 13 and 15.

The Eleventh Quartet received its premiere in the former Leningrad at the preliminary celebrations of thecomposer's 60th birthday. During the very same night, the composer suffered a serious heart attack whichchanged his life and way of thinking. This 1966 quartet was dedicated to the late violinist of the BeethovenQuartet, an ensemble with which the composer was intimately acquainted, appears as a multi-movement suitein which character pieces such as the "Etude" and the "Humoresque" turn up - with a grim, cynical humour,of course. The 13th Quartet composed in 1970 is dedicated to the violist of the Beethoven Quartet and is aportrait, in a single monumental movement, of this instrument that Shostakovich loved so much. In the final,15th Quartet (1974), the composer finally seizes upon a radical formal solution: six Adagio movements cometogether to form a large work of mourning which bears no more dedicationWith Shostakovich's fifteen string quartets the Mandelring Quartet presents a quartet cycle, which in itsentirety probably represents the most important corpus of string quartets of the 20th century.

Of the various wind instruments, it was the natural horn which proved to be the one most favoured byMozart in his solo instrumental music. Four concertos and a plentiful quantity of chamber scores in whichthe horn plays the leading role testify to that.Without doubt all this derived from the friendship between thecomposer and Joseph Leutgeb, a virtuoso player almost 25 years his senior, and who, on a number of occasions, ended up as the target for well-meaning jokes and taunts from Mozart, as is explained in the booklet to this disc.Teunis van der Zwart is one of the world's leading specialists on his instrument today, and here he is joinedby other members from the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century for the chamber music (the Quintet, AMusical Joke, the duos), and by the full orchestra conducted by Frans Brggen for the Horn Concerto, KV477and for an aria from Mitridate, re di Ponto, which also features the starry vocal talents of North Americansoprano Claron McFadden. In recordings made between 2006 and 2008 Brggen and the musicians of hisnow legendary ensemble once more prove themselves to be on magnificent form in creating a further discof reference.

Many of these works ofmajor composers such as Palestrina, Rore, Sandrin,Arcadelt and Lasso survived in dozens of arrangements forinstrumentalists in the 'diminution' form, which refers to the instrumental or vocal performance practice ofornamenting a pre-existing melody.Antico / Moderno features up to four contrasting versions of the originalworks, dating from 1517 to 2009.Embellished versions are by Diego Ortiz, Francesco Rognoni, Giovanni Battista Spadi, Jan van Lublin,VincenzoRuffo, Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde, Girolamo dalla Casa and Doron Sherwin.

We have already explored the works Vivaldi composed for thisparticular ensemble of flute, oboe, violin and bassoon accompanied by the basso continuo on an earlier recording;Vivaldi seems to have been partial to such an ensemble, for hewrote ten concertos for this combination of instruments. Havingstudied these works assiduously and in depth, I can only regretthat Vivaldi composed so few of them - or that so few of themhave come down to us.Why should we not continue and extendwhat he had so clearly envisaged and adapt some of the finerworks of the Venetian master for our ensemble?

    J. S. BACHTrio sonatas for Organ, BWV 525-530Benjamin Alard (Aubertin organ of Saint-Louis en l'le, Paris)

Originating in Italy, the trio sonata imposed itself as one of themajor musical forms of the 18th century. Having been formalisedin sharply contrasting movements by Corelli, it seduced composers who found within it a means to develop their thematic ideas and to free themselves from the framework ofthe suite of dances in a new aesthetic spirit, that of chambermusic. It would normally have been executed by 3 musicians at least, each one playing as best he could themelodic line assigned to him. Bach however, never doing things as everybody else, composed a series of sixsonatas for the organ, adapting the chamber music style to this quintessential church instrument.Born in 1985, Benjamin Alard is already one of the leading figures of the young baroque generation. In 2004he won First Prize and the Audience Award at the Bruges International Harpsichord Competition and in2007 garnered First Prize at the Gottfried-Silbermann International Organ Competition in Freiberg. For hisfirst Alpha recording, he plays the grand organ of the church of Saint-Louis en l'le, where he was appointed in2005, a German style instrument conceived by Bernard Aubertin, which is the most recent organ to havebeen built in Paris.

Richard WAGNERDer fliegende Hollnder / Flying Dutchman

Ludwig Weber (Daland); Astrid Varnay (Senta);Wolfgang Windgassen (Erik);Elisabeth Schrtel (Mary); Josef Traxel (Der Steuermann);Hermann Uhde (Der Hollnder);Chorus & Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival / Hans Knappertsbusch Live Recording 1955

Hans Knappertsbusch conducted Der fliegende Hollnder only once at Bayreuth. Even in retrospect the opening night of the 1955 Festival seems altogether exceptional. This was also the first time that Wagner'searly Romantic had been performed in New Bayreuth. In the run-up to the opening night, there had beencopious discussions about the work's suitability as a Festival offering, but when the production finally opened, such discussions suddenly seemed otiose, so high were the standards of the performance. In Wolfgang Wagner's production, the cast was dominated by three performers who can stand comparisonwith any of their successors. The hochdramatisch Swedish-American soprano Astrid Varnay had first made hermark in Bayreuth in 1951, and as the girlish figure of Senta she presented an impressively accomplished portrait, colouring her voice to produce a multi-dimensional character. Listeners may have heard a moreyouthful timbre in the part, but rarely has the Ballad been sung with such a convincing note of fascinationbordering on the obsessive. Rarely can her duet with the Dutchman have built to such an emphatic climax. And rarely can the finale have been so resolute in its expression.Varnay often appeared alongside HermannUhde in Bayreuth performances of Lohengrin and Gtterdmmerung. As the Dutchman he gives an exemplary performance both vocally and expressively, while coping impeccably with Knappertsbusch's broadtempi and extreme dynamics. As with Knappertsbusch,Wolfgang Windgassen's appearances in Der fliegende Hollnder can be counted onthe fingers of one hand. The role of Erik is not an especially grateful one and is often undercast, butWindgassen brought to it his incomparable intensity, his performances, as always, remarkable for their unityof words and music. In this way Senta's jilted lover became a genuine antagonist for the Dutchman.AsDaland, too, Ludwig Weber brought to his part the right mixture of vocal experience and sufficient reservesfor each of his appearances, all of which demand great vocal and dramatic authority. And as Mary, ElisabethSchrtel invested her various admonitions with all the requisite precision. As the Steersman, finally, JosefTraxel demonstrated such a fresh and bright tenor voice that with hindsight it seems only logical that withina year he should have been promoted to the role of Erik.Although it almost goes without saying, it none theless remains to be mentioned that Wilhelm Pitz's chorus was on top form under Knappertsbusch's direction, which never lost sight of the overall picture. In every respect, the achievements of all concerned were thoroughly worthy of this or, indeed, of any other festival.

Falstaff, Verdi's last opera, has a long performing history in Vienna (it was first performed in 1893), and just aslong is the list of great conductors who have conducted it at the State Opera. These include Lorin Maazel, who presented his interpretation in 1983. featuring a magnificent ensemble of singers, first and foremostWalter Berry, who in the Indian summer of his career conquered the starring role as fat Sir John. He wasequally at home in the joviality of the role and in its ruminative moments as he was in its roguish and impulsive emotional outbursts. The portly knight's object of desire and his antagonist was Pilar Lorengar asAlice Ford, possessed of vocal luminosity and perfect accentuation. Her jealous husband was played as anunbridled, dashing cavalier by the baritone Giorgio Zancanaro. As the young lovers, the silvery-bright sopranoof Patricia Wise and the dark-toned tenor of Francisco Araiza complemented each other charmingly, both intimbre and in the naturalness of their intertwined phrasing. Nor did Christa Ludwig hold back in herrenowned interpretation of Mistress Quickly, luring both Walter Berry and the Viennese public to their assignations in Ford's house and under Herne's Oak.With an ensemble such as this, the final fugue can trulymake us believe that all the world's a joke - and listening to this live recording merely confirms it.

The recording conditions could hardly have been more dramatic, made in the bleak mid-war winter of 1942-3, lirico-spinto soprano Hilde Konetzni in a Romantic song programme with Josef Krips as her accompanistand mentor. Konetzni is best known as the Sieglinde in two complete recordings of the Valkyrie underWilhelm Furtwngler; Krips had been banned from working by the Nazis, so his coaching activities had to becarried out underground, under a constant threat to his life. These private recordings were made byHermann May, the then sound engineer of the Vienna State Opera, and can now be released on CD thanks totheir careful restoration by the Eichinger recording studio in Vienna in collaboration with Gottfried Kraus. The result will delight more than just those interested in Josef Krips's legendary talent for carefully coachingsingers, on account of the warmth and immediacy of the ensemble achieved by Konetzni and Krips. This isjust as evident in the songs by lesser-known composers such as Robert Franz and Joseph Marx. The GypsyMelodies by Antonn Dvork are both the highpoint and the culmination of this recital, not just on account ofthe interpretative art they display, typical of the time, nor merely as a document of two artistic personalities.but as testament to a friendship that was sustained despite adversity.

George London was the outstanding Amfortas,Wotan andDutchman of the late 1950s and early '60s, but also belongedamong those singers with a mature vocal technique and intelligent

characterisation who were able to enthuse audiences in the concert hall without relying merely on theirstage charisma (even though that was present in abundance). At the height of his career, which was cut shorttragically, London gave a lieder recital at the Theater an der Wien. It was there that he had laid the foundations of his European career (and thus also of his later, triumphant return to his native NorthAmerica). London began his recital with the Heine songs from Schubert's Schwanengesang, wandered in thefootsteps of Feodor Chaliapin by singing Jacques Ibert's Iberian-influenced Don Quichotte and finally ModestMussorgski's Songs and Dances of Death - tone paintings of archaic grandeur in which he was wholly in his element. In all three cycles, Erik Werba as accompanist completely lived up to his reputation as a modest, butequal partner. In addition to this live recording from Austrian Radio, ORFEO here offers as a bonus the fivesongs by Henri Duparc with which George London had ten years earlier made his lieder debut before amicrophone, in Canada, the country of his birth.
