CUYAHOGA VALLEY CAREER CENTER

COMMUNITY FINANCE SUB-COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

August 31, 2016 – 4:00 pm, Cuyahoga Valley Career Center Room 670

The Community Finance Sub-Committee of the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center met on Wednesday,

August 31, 2016 in Room 670 at the Career Center. Superintendent Roebuck, Treasurer Berdine and

Adult Director Trew conducted the meeting.

I. The meeting began at 4:15 p.m. Committee members in attendance were: Bob Gillian (Nordonia Hills) and David Tryon (Brecksville-Broadview Heights). Others in attendance were Marcy Trew (Adult Education Director), Rick Berdine (CVCC Treasurer) and Celena Roebuck (CVCC Superintendent).

II. Introduction to Adult Education Programs at CVCC was provided to describe the types of courses offered through adult education (leisure, workforce development and customized). We discussed the importance of adult education within the CVCC communities and the number of adults we serve each year. Described to the committee were the course costs for residents and non-residents and how important these courses and free programming (one-time workshops, job fairs, expos) are to adults who live in our communities and support the work and funding of the career center through their public tax dollars.

III. We discussed the Mission of the sub-committee by sharing the mission of the district first and then explaining our Marketing efforts for our CVCC programs, courses and events. It was agreed that the committee would seek assistance in the development of a business plan for our Adult Education Operation to become a profitable operation.

The committee agreed to share sample Business Plans, seek assistance through CVCC

Marketing Education High School students, and the potential of MBA student project work

through CWRU or CSU. The committee will also review enrollment, competition, pricing

structure and budget history. Time was spent discussing what we call ourselves, Adult

Education rather than “Cuyahoga Valley Technical Center”. As we fall under the auspices of

Ohio Technical Colleges this may be a better identification for our operation.

IV. The committee discussed that it would like to develop a Business Plan this year and deploy the business plan. The committee did not set specific dates of deployment.

V. Defined tasks for next meeting: Celena to share the current CVCC Integrated Marketing and Communications Plan and Celena to elicit interest in CSU MBA student volunteer work or High School Marketing students at CVCC to develop a business plan. Dave to check with CWRU on same and sample business plans. Rick to share budget history. Marcy to share Brown Mackie College and other “for profit” college information and enrollment data.

VI. Next Meeting, October 5, 2016 at 5:00 room 670.

VII. Adjourn – The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.

LESSONS LEARNED

CHROMEBOOK HARDWARE

• ISSUE:

IF THE BATTERY GOES FULLY DEAD ON THE CHROMEBOOK, THE CLOCK RESETS ITSELF TO A DATE IN 2012 AND WILL NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.

• RESOLUTION:

THE RESOLUTION WOULD BE TO ORDER THE DEVICES LATER IN THE SPRING, BUT I RUN THE RISK OF ALL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY SUBMITTING THEIR PURCHASES IN THE SUMMER. THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL THAT THE DEVICE WE ARE SEEKING MAY BE OUT-OF-STOCK DUE TO SUPPLY AND DEMAND. I FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE LIVING WITH THIS POTENTIAL ISSUE AND MAINTAINING THE ESTIMATED APRIL ORDER TIMEFRAME.

LESSONS LEARNED

GOOGLE SYNC TOOL – ISSUE

• THE SYNC TOOL WAS SETUP THIS SUMMER TO PREVENT DUPLICATE PASSWORDS. IF A STUDENT SETS THEIR COMPUTER PASSWORD, IT AUTOMATICALLY SYNCS WITH GOOGLE TO MATCH.

• WHEN THE TEST WAS CONDUCTED DURING THE SUMMER, IT WORKED FINE BUT THERE WERE ISSUES WITH IT INITIALLY WHEN THE BUILDING WAS OCCUPIED WITH 400 USERS.

• THE TOOL HAS BEEN INSTALLED TO THE LOAD BALANCING SERVER WHICH RECTIFIED THE ISSUE.

LESSONS LEARNED

ALLOWING STUDENTS TO SET THEIR OWN PASSWORD.

• THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THAT THE DISTRICT ALLOWED THE STUDENTS TO

SET THEIR OWN PASSWORD, RATHER THAN DISTRIBUTING PASSWORDS TO

THEM TO LOGIN TO THE COMPUTERS AND CHROMEBOOKS.

• THIS SAVED ADMINISTRATIVE LABOR, AND STUDENTS FORGET THEIR

PASSWORD LESS OFTEN SINCE THEY SET IT.

• OVERALL THE STAFF HAS GIVEN ME POSITIVE FEEDBACK BASED ON THIS

CHANGE.

Proposal for Credit Flex Class

Applied Science in Human Services

EMIS Code: 139998 (Other Advanced Science)

Credit Flexibility Type: Test Out Option with no penalty for failure

Credit Value: 1 credit

Target population: Students enrolled in Cosmetology I program

Instructor: CVCC HQT Science Instructor

Content to be covered: Microbiology, Trichology, Anatomy and Physiology (with emphasis on

the Integumentary System), Nutrition, Skin Diseases and Disorders,

Nail Diseases and Disorders, Electrical and Light Energies and Their

Therapeutic Applications, and Chemical Principles and Applications

Plan for Implementation:

Students enrolled in the Cosmetology I program would be provided the opportunity to participate in single administration of a 50-question test covering the content listed above. A score of 60% would be required to earn credit for this course. Grades would be assigned based on the CVCC grading scale (90%-100% - A, 80%-89% - B, 70%-79% - C, 60% -69% - D, below 59% - no credit/no penalty). There will be no opportunity to retake this test if a passing grade is not achieved on the first attempt. Successful completion of this test would result in credit flex information being sent to the student’s associate school district for inclusion on the district’s transcript. Students who did not achieve a passing score on this test would be required to complete a different science course with a passing grade prior to the start of the next CVCC school year or they would not be permitted to return to the second year of the Cosmetology program at CVCC. Implementation Target Date: 2017-18 school year

This would be a test-out option credit covering the many scientific concepts emphasized within

the Cosmetology program. It will be presented at the Principals’ meeting for feedback and then

updated as needed.

Cybersecurity Proposal Background

This proposal is for a new Information Technology program to be housed at Revere High School (or CVCC). It will complement our current IT offerings of Computer Networking Academy (N2) and Programming & Software Development (N3). The goal is to develop an additional, attractive, pathway to students, not to further reduce the number of Revere students who attend CTE programming at the Career Center. The Cybersecurity program will be in the Information Support and Services (N0) pathway.

The initial curriculum discussion was with Jason Hoffman of Buckeye Educational Systems and Steve Beaudry of Marcraft, and follows the Cybersecurity model developed by Marcraft. Below is a suggested course sequence and EMIS codes, with included industry certifications. The course sequence and delivery model (from as long as 6-yr to as short as 2-yr) could be altered as needed.

*Note: Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Network Fundamentals is not currently recognized as an industry credential by ODE.

This proposal will accomplish two goals: increase the number of Revere students attending CVCC and increase the availability of CTE programs for students who want to stay at Revere.
