PastMCA President Steven McCarley and Director Ed Hocka-day have joined Ford Motor Company's 50th Anniver-sary Committee for the Ford Mustang. No location hasbeen chosen yet, but a birthday party on the July 4thweekend in Dearborn would be nice. The Special Edi-tion Mustang Club of America Car now has a Certificateof Authenticity available thru Ford. It is true each of us touches lives in way we neverimagined. It’s like George Bailey in the holiday classic“It’s A Wonderful Life”. Each holiday season, we arereminded how each of us affects the world in someway or another — and when one of us passes, we’rereminded again that each and every one of us is signifi-cant to the course of history in some way. To bounceout of bed ready and excited to go follow your passionand practice your craft is a gift. Jon Enyeart, founderof Pony Carburetors, never forgot that. He went afterclassic car fuel systems, in particular carburetors andignition systems, with great passion and tenacity, founding Pony Carburetors in 1988 in western NewYork. For more than two decades, Pony Carburetorshas brought us Concours-restored carburetors, breath-ing new life into vintage Fords and other collectorcars. Jon decided to escape those brutal New Yorkwinters, moving his Pony Carburetors operation to LasCruces, New Mexico a few years ago. He enjoyed thegreat southwest and loved being there.

Our world lost Jon Enyeart August 29 at the MesillaValley Hospice in Las Cruces, New Mexico after alengthy battle with brain cancer. He was 59. Jon wasnative to Nebraska, graduating from the University ofNebraska at Lincoln. He loved the Cornhuskers. Hewas a pilot. He had a great time entertaining friendsand associates. Whenever Jon sat down and spent timewith you, you quickly understood you mattered to him.

More than anything, Jon was a perfectionist who neversettled for anything less than his best in everything hedid. He also expected it from people fortunate enoughto be associated with his operation. It goes withoutsaying Jon leaves a huge void, with most of us wonder-ing how we’re going to get along without him.

Postcards from the 2011 Track Day

The weather looked very iffy for a while, and the damptrack caused some really interesting slides at first, but,in the end, everyone had a ball. Thanks to everyonewho came out, a huge thank you to the TireRack forallowing us to use their facilities, and special thanks toPete & Marilyn McClure for their work in organizing theday.

Once again, David Anson upheld the honor of first-generation Mustangs

Peggy Anson wasn’t about to let David have all the fun

As usual, Pete McClure let it all hang out on the track

Phil Nicodemus gave his new GT a ride

The new Boss 302 was easily the fastest car of the day.Of course the fact the David regularly competes inSCCA Autocrosses may have something to do with that.

This was the darndest-looking Mustang we’d ever seen, but we let it run anyway.

Before the start...

A Shortcut to Iowa?

A few days before we left for the Grand National Showin Des Moines, Iowa, I heard a talk show host talkingabout a trip out west and a guest asked him if therewas a short way to get Des Moines. They all laugh-ingly said "there is no short way to get to Iowa.” Aftera few hours of driving on Interstate 80 with a 50 min-ute period of parking lot speed driving, I was askingmy usual questions like 'how many more miles" and"are we there yet?"

If you have never been out west by highway, you can-not imagine the acres and acres and acres of corn andbean fields. Once we got through the slow strip on I-80it was clear sailing the rest of the way. Somehow Jimhas a way of making the sun shine on my side of thecar and it was in my lap most of the way into Iowa.

Our residence for the 3-day show was the Des MoinesAirport Holiday Inn which still had a Holidome. Manyof your can probably remember those. On Friday morn-ing while waiting in line to register, we heard a blastingsound of many jet engines, which almost shook ourteeth out. We were told that every Friday morning sev-eral F-16 fighter jets put on this little soundshow. Luckily we were not kept awake by planes takingoff.

Only Mustang show parking was allowed in the hotelparking lot for this 3-day show. The hotel had a shuttlethat would take you to restaurant eating in thearea. We had met up with Karon and Curly Long andBecky and Art Campbell, so the 6 of us ate a few mealstogether.

If you ever need good travel agents, talk to the Camp-bells. They had come a few days early and visited sev-eral points of interest in the Des Moines area. Theywent to the birthplaces of celebrities that we didn'tknow were from the area.

This show was the best show in Jim's life becausehe would be receiving his Conservator Medallion forearning 20 points in National and Grand Nationalshows. Because of this honor-to-be, we had preferen-tial parking in the show lot (we were #4 on the lot.). Agold award was won at this show, also. Our picturewith the awards will appear in the October or Novem-ber issue of the Mustang Times.

At the banquet on Saturday night, we sat with a couplefrom the local area. He had a Mustang in high schoolwhich he had to sell, but he always liked Mus-tangs. The banquet was his birthday present, and com-ing to the show was her surprise to him, hoping thatseeing all the Mustangs would get him interestedagain. Two more couples sat with us and just hap-pened to know some of the same Mustang dealers that

the first couple did. It was interesting listening to themcompare stories.

After the awards program on Sunday we headed backeast to home. I-80 was finally finished and there wereno backups going home. A most interesting 3 days withother Mustang owners, meeting new friends and enjoy-ing the old.

Most interesting sight along the way; extra long flatbedtrailers hauling the blades to the huge wind turbinesthat are being installed out there and in our area also.

Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth said Ford plans tolower its total debt to $10 billion by mid-decade.

Ford Motor Co. paid off $1.8 billion in debt Thursday(September 15), part of a plan to lower its total debt to$10 billion by mid-decade.

Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth announced the ac-tion earlier this week at an investor presentation inFrankfurt, Germany. Ford spokesman Todd Nissen con-firmed that the payment was made Thursday. Ford'stotal debt now stands at $12.2 billion, down from $33.6billion at the end of 2009.

The payment is the latest in a string of debt reductionactions at Ford. The company paid down $2.6 billion indebt in the second quarter and $2.5 billion in the firstquarter.

Booth said Ford plans to lower its total debt to $10 bil-lion by mid-decade. That will save the company mil-lions in interest payments and also could help the com-pany return to investment-grade status. Ford lost itsinvestment-grade credit rating in 2005, when it wasdeeply in debt.

"No way," was the statement from Ford design chief JMays when asked whether the redesigned 2014 FordMustang will be another retro job. He says the nextiteration of the pony car will follow a different road.

The design for the next Ford Mustang is currently be-ing "locked down," according to Mays. It's a big mile-stone for the company, marking 50 years of the Mus-tang and the sixth major redesign.

"The challenge or the opportunity for 2014 with a50th-anniversary car is to not just look back over yourshoulder, but to try to win all of the Mustang faithfulyet bring the brand forward as well," Mays told Auto-motive News.

"It has to look like a Mustang," Mays said. "But you godown a list of things that might or might not be nec-essary to make the car look like a Mustang."

Birth Control PillsAn elderly woman went into the doctor's office.

When the doctor asked why she was there, she replied,"I'd like to have some birth control pills."

Taken back, the doctor thought for a minute and thensaid, "Excuse me, Mrs. Smith, but you're 72 years old. What possible use could you have for birth controlpills?"

The woman responded, "They help me sleep better."

The doctor thought some more and continued, "How inthe world do birth control pills help you to sleep?"

The woman said, "Simple, I put them in my grand-daughter's orange juice every morning and I sleep bet-ter at night."

The Devil Made Me Do ItThe poor preacher was livid when his wife broughthome a $500 dress. "What made you do this?"

"I don't know," she cried.

"I entered the store, saw this dress, and suddenlyfound myself trying it on. It was as if the devil whis-pered, 'You look great in that dress. Buy it!' "

"Well," said the pastor, "you know how to deal with thedevil. Just tell him, 'Get thee behind me, Satan!' "

"Oh, I did, honey," replied his wife, "and then Satansaid, 'It looks even better from back here!' "

Next Ford Mustang won't be retro

U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys forTots Program

Once again this year we will be collecting toys for Toysfor Tots at the November meeting. We all know of theprogram; I thought it might be interesting to learnsome of the program’s background. The following areexcerpts from the program’s web site…

The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortu-nate children throughout the United States experiencethe joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the de-velopment of one of our nation’s most valuable re-sources – our children; to unite all members of localcommunities in a common cause for three months eachyear during the annual toy collection and distributioncampaign; and to contribute to better communities inthe future…

Toys for Tots Began in 1947, when Major BillHendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists inLos Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys toneedy children. The idea came from Bill’s wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane crafted a homemade doll andasked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization, whichwould give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Billdetermined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill thathe should start one. He did. The 1947 pilot project wasso successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys forTots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide cam-paign. That year, Marine Corps Reserve units acrossthe nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in eachcommunity in which a Marine Reserve Center was lo-cated. Marines have conducted successful nationwidecampaigns at Christmas each year since 1948…

Over the 62 years of the U. S. Marine Corps ReserveToys for Tots Program, Marines have distributed morethan 400 million toys to more than 188 million needychildren. This charitable endeavor has made U. S. Ma-rines the unchallenged leader in looking after less for-tunate children at Christmas. Over its 18 year lifespan, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has supple-mented local toy collections with more than 81.3 mil-lion toys valued at more than $487 million; plus hasprovided promotion and support materials valued atover $6.3 million.

Why Teachers Drink...

ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE READY FOR THIS?

The following questions were set in last year's GEDexamination. These are genuine answers (from 16year olds)... and they WILL breed

Q. Name the four seasonsA. Salt, pepper, mustard, and vinegar

Q. Explain one of the processes by which water canbe made safe to drinkA. Flirtation makes water safe to drink because it re-moves large pollutants like grit, sand, dead sheepand canoeists

From the Back Seat...

For everyone heading to Tennessee this weekend:best wishes for a safe trip filled with fun. I’ve seenthe enthusiasm some of you have shown for thistrip, and I can’t imagine you won’t have a goodtime.

I hope Becky and I haven’t sentenced the area tothe worst winter in history this year. This is thefirst winter we’ve had classic car insurance for theMustangs, so we’re looking forward to being ableto get the cars out on occasion. Hopefully there willbe some nice days in January and February.

October and November are traditionally two of theworst months for meeting attendance. Let’s try tobuck that trend this month. We need as much par-ticipation as possible in nominations for next year’sofficers. It’s your club; don’t forfeit your right tohave a say in who runs it.

Next year is our 35th anniversary as a club. If youhave any ideas for ways to celebrate, let me know.

Have a good month...
