Recycling Facts
The average American throws away 3.5 pounds of trash per day.
America makes up 5% of the world’s population but consumes 26% of the world’s energy.
A 5 minute shower is equal to 20-35 gallons of water.
Recycling one ton of newspapers save 15 trees.
The average American uses 650 lbs of paper a year.
The plastic used in one toner cartridge contains about a half quart of oil.
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours.
We use 80,000,000,00 aluminum soda cans a year.
By recycling plastic, more than 16 barrels of oil are saved .
Recycle Bins Every Residence Hall has recycling bins on their floor or in the trash rooms. Please do your part and recycle. Remember that plastic bottles and aluminum cans should be rinsed out before recycling. Also, food boxes cannot be recycled. All materials collected must be clean of residue. Check out the MU Sustainability webpage for more information or talk with your Resident Advisor
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Branches is a non-profit agency providing shelter to
women, children, and men who are victims of domestic
violence. They believe that everyone has the right to live
without fear of violence. They offer residents the chance to
rest and heal in a safe environment with the help of their
staff of both professionals and trained volunteers who help
to assess the victim’s situations, examine alternatives, and
establish plans of action designed to deal most effectively
with the violent relationships from which they have fled.
Housing and Residence Life will be collecting donations for
this organization beginning Monday, October 8th
. Anything
you could offer would be greatly appreciated by all! Bins
will be located at the front desk of each residence hall.

Check out of the Bul-letin Board on your way out to find out what classroom we are meeting in for this week! See you there!
Congratulations! You made it through your first month of college! I hope that it was a great month for you and that you’re finally getting into the swing of things. If you’re still adjusting, that’s okay! It can take a while to get used to being away from your parents, having a lot more free time and choices, and making new friends when you might have in a while. This is a good time to approach your RA if you’re having concerns or problems. More likely than not, they’ll be able to help you through whatev-er you need help with. If they can’t, they can certainly point you in the direction of someone who can!

Program Spotlight: Man Challenge
On September 5th
, residents from the 2nd
floor of Holderby competed against their
counterparts from the 3rd
floor to decide which floor was manlier. The result was an hour
of fun-filled competition, with the two floors tying in overall points. The contest began
with an individual challenge: the Alka Seltzer games! Residents placed an antacid tablet
on their tongues, and then poured some Sprite in their mouths. Everyone then closed
their mouths, trying to hold back the carbonated gases. They then competed in the
cinnamon challenge!
The competition continued with an obstacle course, in which teams had to verbally
guide their blindfolded members through the course without touching any of the
obstacles. Afterwards, each group talked about leadership strategies, discussing different
techniques and analyzing why these techniques did or didn’t work.
The competition ended with a variation of the infamous “milk challenge”, in which
residents faced off in a milk-chugging competition.

Holderby Hall Council
The name has been updated, and so has the passion and vision!
Hall Council Officers:
President: Jasmine Wood
Vice President: Adenna Jo Holly
Secretary: Christina Harris
Treasurer: Quincy Cecil
You all may remember the Resident Hall Association, more commonly referred to as RHA.
This year, in accordance with HRL’s new affiliation with the NACURH, the name has changed
to Hall Council. These student groups, composed of both volunteers and an executive
council of elected representatives, serve as the voices of the residence halls. Holderby has
some new officers this year who have brought renewed enthusiasm to the hall. They have
already begun planning some exciting things for Holderby! Here’s a quick run-down of some
of their amazing ideas:
Holderby Hall Stars: The hall council wishes to recognize those residents who are pushing
themselves to achieve at a high academic level. To further this cause, they have
created the “Hall Stars” program. Residents will have the opportunity to show their
RAs, or an officer of the Hall Council, their good grades. As recognition, the
resident will have his/her name written on a paper star which will then go on a Hall
of Fame in the lobby, on display for all to see!! In addition, the resident will also be
recognized on his/her floor, which will have a floor-specific Hall of Fame!
MUDD Cup & Homecoming: These two traditions generate enormous excitement around
campus, and our Hall Council is no exception. They have decided to actively
participate and recruit other residents to participate in our annual MUDD cup. This
four day challenge pits the residence halls against each other, all vying for the
coveted MUDD cup. Holderby took the trophy last year and will look to defend her
title. MUDD cup, falling on the first week of October, will be a great build-up to
Homecoming. Our Hall Council has come up with some innovate ideas for
decorating the lobby, in the hopes of also retaining the “Best Homecoming
Decorations” titles she earned last year. Good luck, Hall Council!! Bring those titles
back!
Looking forward: Our Hall Council has decided to partner with the Holderby RAs to sponsor
a Halloween Party at the end of October. Last year’s party was a great success and
we have no doubt that this event will be even bigger and better!

Upcoming Events
Marshall’s annual “Herd vs. Zombies” will take place the week of September 23
rd. This event began two years ago at
Marshall when five RAs decided to bring the popular college game of HvZ to campus. The original event, which lasted five days and included about 300 participants, was the largest program ever planned by RAs at Marshall. Since then, it has grown in popularity and size.
Last year, Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity on campus, teamed with the Nerf Club to continue the event and make it an annual tradition. They expect as many as 600 participants this year! I’m sure the participants are grateful to both the original group of RAs who brought the event to Marshall and to the APO-Nerf Club partnership which has continued it.
It’s sometimes easy to forget that RAs are
students too. As such, they sometimes need
to de-stress just like our residents do. On
Saturday, September 22, the staff of
Holderby Hall took a quick trip to Billy Bob’s
Wonderland on route 60, where they
competed against each other in an intense
game of putt-putt golf.

Brace for fall and brace for Hall council! The votes are in and officers are ready for their first semester. President Britanie Mor gan, Vice President Taryss Mandt, Secretary Chelsea Simmons, and Treasurer Haley O’Neil are willing and able to lead the hall council meetings this year. Meetings will be held at 9:00 PM eve-ry Tuesday of the week in the Glass Lounge on the first floor, all residents of the building are invited and greatly encouraged to come out. For those residents who don’t know; Hall Council is a student run government just for this residence hall. Its officers are elected in once a year, and they deal directly with Twin Towers East. Their main goal is to make living on Campus as fun as possible by planning pro-grams for students to enjoy . If you have any ideas for things you’d like to see or do around the building we would love to have your opinion in the coming Tuesdays.
The Twin Towers East student kitchen is nearing
completion. It wil l be located on the f irst f loor, facing
5th avenue. The kitchen wil l serve the needs of
students who want to cook or bake.
