Esco Medical® : A Rising Star on the Horizon of the Medical / IVF Industry by: Joseph Angelo Uichanco - Application Specialist, Esco Medical

Nowadays, couples struggling with infertility have more and more options to be able to have a baby. Most notable of these is in vitro fertilization (IVF). Currently, IVF is a growing industry as more and more people gain access to doctors and clinics that offer fertility treatments that include the latest artificial reproductive technologies (ART).

Infertility is defined as the inability of a heterosexual couple to get pregnant after 1 year of regular attempts to conceive. It is a sensitive problem and it impacts the affected individuals on many levels. Indeed, it brings with it economic, psychological, and social consequences. Moreover, low birth rates are an issue for many.

In vitro fertilization is a highly specialized medical procedure. Briefly, it involves harvesting gametes from the male and female, combining these in the lab, incubating the embryo, and then transferring the embryo to the uterus to progress to full-term pregnancy. IVF, consequently, involves highly specialized trained practitioners and likewise, highly specialized protocols and equipment. To date, thousands of children have already been born since the first IVF baby was born in the 1970s.

The Esco Group of Companies realizes the importance of reproductive health and the importance of reinvigorating the IVF technological market with state-of-the-art and cutting-edge innovation. The company, through Lin Xiang Qian, Esco Group of Companies CEO, recognizes this furthermore as an opportunity to transfer its long-standing expertise in laboratory equipment, clean air, and isothermal technologies to the IVF market. The result is the birth of Esco Medical.

Esco Medical is in large part the brainchild of the acquisition of Thomas Pedersen’s expertise in meeting the exacting requirements of IVF laboratories and clinics. Thomas Pedersen is the EVP for innovation at Esco Medical and here, he leads the development of the product line of IVF laboratory solutions under the brand name. Currently, Esco Medical offers IVF workstations, conventional CO

2 incubators, and benchtop incubators. The Miri® is Launched at ESHRE 2012

While the Esco Medical brand name is relatively new in the IVF market, the new Esco Miri Multi-room Incubator for IVF sets the tone as an impressive introductory product at the recently concluded meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Istanbul, Turkey. The Esco Medical team, composed of XQ Lin, Esco Group CEO; Thomas Pedersen, EVP for Innovation; Joseph Uichanco, Application Specialist; and Owais Yaqub, Regional Manager for MENA, was present and introduced the product line which included the Miri.

The Miri’s reception was very positive. As a benchtop multi-room incubator for IVF, it meets all the requirements expected by the inquiring IVF experts---embryologists, clinicians, and other IVF specialists---who visited the Esco Medical exhibit booth. Miri was described as an exceptionally designed product that allowsusers to use pure gas to control CO2 and O2 concentration, has a full-range of temperature and gas control and validation features, 6 completely isolated chambers, and so much more.

The Miri also boasts extensive certification such as CE markingas an EU MDD Class IIa Medical Device and IEC/EN 60601-1 (3rd edition). Also exhibited at the Esco Medical booth were the Labculture® IVF Workstation and CelCulture® conventional CO2 incubator with Suppressed O2 for IVF.

The governing principle behind the current (and future) products of Esco Medical is that of the Silent Embryo Hypothesis. The hypothesis is that the less disturbed or less stressed cultured embryos are, the less active their metabolism is. Ultimately, this low level metabolic activity means that the embryo does not expend energy to address any stressors or damage and thus maximizes developmental potential of the embryo to progress into a healthy pregnancy. Some common stressors that might be introduced during embryo culture include temperature and gas concentration fluctuation, non-optimal pH levels of the growth medium, biological contaminants, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The current lineup of Esco Medical products are all designed around the aim of minimizing negative issues relating to embryo culture and manipulation. For example, the CO2

incubator employs a high-performance ULPA filter that provides clean air to circulate to the cultures. Suppressed O2 models also allow for provision of lowered oxygen concentrations; recent studies have highlighted the benefit of controlling the oxygen in incubators to around 5% O2.

The new Miri benchtop incubator furthermore builds on these as it is multi-chambered with smaller effective volumes that minimize or totally prevent temperature and gas concentration fluctuation that usually occurs when the incubator door is opened and cultures are accessed. To that effect, Miri can demonstrate fast recovery of the said culture conditions.

Beyond embryo incubation, embryos and other related biological samples sometimes need to be manipulated. The Labculture IVF Workstations is offered as an ideal solution to provide a sterile work environment with a work surface warmed to physiological temperature. The concept then is a complete setup to be able to perform manipulation while minimizing temperature disruptions to the biological material such as temperature-sensitive embryos in culture. The workstation can further be customized with other relevant features such as integration of microscopes and LCD monitors.

The temperature-controlled line of equipment is currently Esco’s fastest growing product line, with new products, models, or options launched every quarter. A good number of ULT freezers, CO2 incubators, refrigerated incubators, and general purpose ovens and incubators have been sold and installed all over the world. Now, Esco is providing more options to customers for these world class products.

A stainless steel exterior on laboratory equipment means having a robust construction and a corrosion-resistant surface. This

option is now possible for the Isotherm® Forced Convection Laboratory Ovens and Incubators. Stainless steel exteriors help to meet pharmaceutical and clinical laboratory requirements.

Copper interior option is now available for the CelCulture CO2 incubator. With its anti-microbial properties we’ve known for hundreds of years, 100% pure copper interiors, including copper shelves, offer additional protection for your precious samples. The CelCulture now comes in 3 sizes: 50L, 170L, and 240L.

Lexicon ULT Freezers for Sushi RestaurantsAbout 3 months ago, Esco GB received an inquiry for a -86 freezer from someone who is setting up a sushi restaurant. According to him, they require to store fish at this temperature to prevent deterioration and the fish would remain fresh when thawed and cut up, better than normal freezers. Esco GB offered the Lexicon UUS-668A-1 with the S-series controller. Who knows? This could be another new industry for Esco Lexicon ULT Freezers.

END-USER SEMINARS – LAOS AND MYANMAR

End-user seminars are one of Esco’s ways of serving its customers and helping to promote safety awareness and best practices in the laboratory, especially when working with equipment such as Esco’s products. Two end-user seminars were conducted last April and May in Laos and Myanmar, respectively.

Despite being a small country, Laos shows huge potential with a lot of areas to be explored. Thanks to the support of our distributor, Europ Continents, Esco was able to organize a seminar on April 4-5 at the Pasteur Institute in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Pasteur Institute is one of the biggest customers in Laos and this seminar serves as a good break for Esco in the country.

Due to the very good response to the seminar invitation, Esco had to allot 2 days for Myanmar in order to accommodate the huge number of interested end-users. The first session was held on May 10 at Panda Hotel where there was a mix of about 80 participants from the private sector, fish government, OBVC, and other institutions. The second batch of attendees was from the Department of Medical Research where about 60 people were in attendance from the government sector. This session was held the following day, May 11. Thanks to our partner in Myanmar, Nanova, for helping us to organize this event and made it a success.

Esco Offers Hydrogen Peroxide Decon in SingaporeDecontamination of biological safety cabinets is needed for a safer and efficient working process for users as well as to protect samples from contamination. The most common decontamination method is by fumigation with formaldehyde gas. In some countries, however, formaldehyde is banned. Instead, decontamination is done using chlorine dioxide or hydrogen peroxide. Esco now offers decontamination service using Bioquell EBDS Hydrogen Peroxide Vaporizer, which is an environmentally-friendly alternative to formaldehyde gas.

Hydrogen Peroxide or H2O2 decontamination is performed by flash vaporization of an aqueous peroxide mixture, creating a vapor that is distributed throughout the inside of the biosafety cabinet. H2O2 vapor is non-carcinogenic but highly effective against microorganisms. It breaks down under

catalytic action to become air and water, making it safe for the environment and leaving no residue.
