dear reader,

welcome to the October edition of the mile straight. we are delighted to announce that work has started on site for the redevelopment of the centre course car park as well as the first phase of the housing development. the beginning of the work coincided with the rebranding of the racecourse newbury and marks the start of a busy festive season at the racecourse, including the prestigious winter Festival. in this newsletter, we take you through exactly what is happening on site and introduce you to the people behind the redevelopment.

What can people expect to see over the next few months? Work has now started on the centre course car park located in the middle of the racetrack, which will provide new parking facilities for the racecourse. In addition, work has also commenced to facilitate the construction of the first phase of houses. The racecourse estate maintenance yard will be demolished during October to coincide with ecological considerations and to make way for the new infrastructure within the project. We are hoping to begin junction improvements to Stroud Green in late October, marking the start of the construction of the first residential phase of 141 houses within the Western portion of this Racecourse living location.

What’s happening with the roundabout and new road system? As many local residents and businesses will have observed with the traffic control measures, we have started to construct a new roundabout along Hambridge Road, which should be completed during early 2013. In years to come the roundabout will form the new entrance and gateway into the racecourse development.

What is the timescale on the centre course car park and which contractor is carrying out the work?The centre course car park construction started early October and has got off to a great start with the successful contractor Agetur UK and is expected to take in the order of 12 weeks to construct. The finished car park will be available for parking in 2013, following a maturing and establishing period for the grassed isles.

Are you a fan of racing?Despite my poor past form on picking a winner, I always enjoy a day at the races.

What’s your favourite sport?I enjoy following motor sport and am keen on cycling. With a young family I am kept extremely active and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

If you owned a race horse, what would you call it? That’s a tough one, although if I was ever lucky enough I would probably name it ‘Family Fun’ to capture the overall experience.

What does a day in the life of a DWH Project Manager consist of?It is fair to say that there is never a dull moment. Every day poses a variety of challenges and I would consider my role to be extremely diverse. As well as engaging and communicating with different audiences, a project like The Racecourse Newbury creates change but I consider myself fortunate to be able to play a significant part in delivering such a fantastic project and create an unrivalled living experience on a centre of a racecourse community, the first of its kind in the UK. I look forward to being able to share the progress over the duration of the project.

Project site working hours within the racecourse will typically be:Monday - Friday 07.30 – 18.30

Saturday 07.30 – 13.00

No working on Sundays or Bank holidays

As the project develops it will be necessary to introduce temporary diversions that will impact upon visitors to the racecourse, especially during the construction of the new junction in Stroud Green and along the existing entrance road. During this period new temporary routes within the racecourse will be implemented and we thank all members of the public and visitors in advance for their continued cooperation.

09. racecourse FacilitiesStarting from the western end, this phase of work sees significant stand refurbishment, relandscaping to create a greener environment including a new parade ring area, saddling boxes, main entrances from the Centre Course and Eastern car parks, offices and new food and drink outlets

10. eastern car parksthe new bridge means that customers will arrive at the eastern end of the racecourse and park in these car parks, located north and south of the central area apartments

Once the bridge opens, the work for these will begin including c.350 luxury and affordable apartments and a hotel situated in line with the main grandstands

The exciting new redevelopment of The Racecourse Newbury will see 1500 homes constructed over an anticipated 10 year timetable. As well as the homes, the development will include new and refurbished racing facilities, an improved road and parking infrastructure as well as a new Rocking Horse Nursery. The Sportingbet Winter Festival, including Gentlemen’s Day and Hennessy Gold Cup - 29 November - 1 December:

The hugely popular Sportingbet Winter Festival starts the festive season in style with a fabulous line up of entertainment, winter fashion and the best Jump racing in the country. Split into Newbury Day, Gentlemen’s Day and one of Britain’s most prestigious races the Hennessy Gold Cup, the Winter Festival is a must attend. Entertainment highlights include a Movember Mo-Parade, Ice Rink, Christmas Shopping Village and of course a fabulous selection of star steeplechasers going head to head over a gruelling distance to add their name to this esteemed roll of honour.

The first race starts at 12.30pm on Thursday and Friday and 12.25pm on Saturday.

For those gentlemen who are getting involved with growing moustaches for movember, please note the racecourse newbury is offering a £5 discount on thursday and Friday of the sportingbet winter Festival for those with moustaches. there will also be a mo-parade at 12 on Friday 30 november in the parade ring, so make sure you’re there to join in. the best racing moustache as judged by a celebrity racegoer will win a prize.

For a lovely family day out, the last Flat season raceday of the year is the perfect choice. there is free entry for armed Forces, rbl members and under 18s. this year has an aviation theme with a flypast by the Army Air Corps, flight simulators, helicopter displays and will launch berkshire’s 2012 poppy appeal.

In honour of 50 years of Bond and the launch of a new 007 movie, Skyfall, The Racecourse Newbury is hosting Casino Royale themed Christmas Parties, selling like hotcakes as they return to the Grandstand, on specific dates through December.

Guests will be transported into their very own Hollywood reality with a Vodka Martini on arrival and the chance to try their luck at the roulette tables before sitting down to a four course Christmas Dinner created by the in-house catering team.
