Q:  Why  do  dogs  pull  on  the  lead?    A:   Because   they   are   rewarded   for  doing  so.  Dogs   repeat   behaviours   that   get  rewarded.     Dog   pulls,   owner   follows;  dog   is   rewarded   for   pulling.     It’s   no  more  complicated   than   that.    Change  the   consequence,   change   the  behaviour.     Stop   when   the   lead   is  Oght,  wait  for  the  lead  to  loosen  (walk  backwards   a   few   steps   if   needed),  walk   forward  when   the   lead   is   loose.    Don’t  make  it  unnecessarily  difficult  by  insisOng   your   dog   walk   perfectly  beside   you;   it’s   OK   for   your   dog   to  walk   ahead   of   you   as   long   as   they  don’t  pull.    A   longer   lead  may  allow  a  bit  more  “sniffing”  freedom,  therefore  less   likelihood   of   the   lead   going   Oght  too.

Dogs  are  social  animals  and  love  nothing  more  than  hanging  out  with  their  non-‐furry  friends  at  all   Omes   (including   on   our   beds!)   and   in   addiOon   to   being   social,   dogs   crave   exercise   and  exploraOon  as  part  of  a  daily  rouOne.  Most  of  us  work  a  9-‐5  job  and  have  to  leave  our  waggy-‐tailed  companions  on  their  own  for  the  duraOon  of  the  day,  someOmes  causing  loneliness  and  boredom.  There  are  side  effects  to  this,  such  as  excessive  barking,  digging,  chewing  and  other  destrucOve  behaviours.      Here  is  Woof  Mag’s  guide  to  managing  a  “home-‐alone”  dog:    "  Provide  access  to  a  view  –  dogs  will  get  great  entertainment  from  watching  passers  by  and

like  my  2  dogs,  have  the  occasional  sniff  and  bark  at  other  passing  dogs!  "  Provide  a  variety  of  mini-‐environments  in  your  back  yard  -‐                grassed  lawn  area  (for  rolling,  eaOng,  bones,  stretching  out  and  running  around  with  toys),              a  shrubby  area  under  trees  (for  sniffing  and  exploring)  a  rock  garden  (great  for            adracOng  entertaining  lidle  lizards  to  chase),  a  pond  (without  delicate  plants  or  fish!),  a            cool  spot  under  the  house    "  Hide  treats/dog  food  in  a  designated  sandpit  or  around  the  lawn  area  for  your  dog  to  sniff

out  and  find  "  Paddling   pools   filled   with   water   and   toys   are   sOmulaOng   and   provide   relief   in   the   hot

weather  "  Giving  your  dog  a  ‘job’  to  do  is  important  and  Kongs  can  be  very  handy  for  this,  they  are  a

hollow  rubber  toy  which  can  be  stuffed  with  treats  and  other                foods  for  your  dog  to  work  at  removing.    A  cheap  and  simple                alternaOve  is  to  half  fill  a  plasOc  PET  bodle  with  dry  dog  food,                pasta  or  water  and  allow  your  dog  to  toss  it  around.  Leave  the                top  off  and  treats  will  slowly  spill  out.  "  Enrolling  your  dog  in  doggy  daycare    a  couple  of  days                per  week  or  hiring  a  dog  walker  are  opOons  if  you  really                can’t  be  around  as  much  as  you’d  like.      While  the  above  [ps  will  help  your  dog  amuse  himself  in  your    absence  there  is  no  subs[tute  for  [me  spent  with  you.  The    Most  environmentally  enriched  back  yard  is  s[ll  a  poor  second    to  a  long  walk  or  a  free  run  with  the  pack  leader!

The   days   of   leaving   a   bored,   lonely   and  someOmes  badly  behaved  dog  at  home  while  you’re  at  work  is  a  thing  of  the  past.    Doggy   Daycare,   similar   to   Childcare,   is  sweeping  across  Australia.   It  provides  a  place  where   owners   leave   their   four-‐legged   friends  while   they’re   at   work   or   away   for   the   day.  Their  dogs  then  spend  the  day  in  the  company  of  other  dogs,  playing  together  and  socialising  in  a  large  indoor  open  environment  under  the  careful      supervision  of  experienced  trainers.  Dogs   at   Daycare   play   nicely   together   since  they  have  all  passed  a  behavioural  assessment  prior   to   being   enrolled.   Unfortunately   badly  behaved  or  unsociable  dogs  are  not  allowed  to  adend.    Kristy   Cooper,   Manager   of   WagginTails  believes     that  a  Doggy  Daycare  facility  on  the  Central  Coast  was  long  overdue.  “Dogs  are  like  kids   in   many   ways;   they   need   to   burn-‐off  excess   energy   and  be   entertained   constantly,  otherwise   they   quickly   get   bored.   And   the  frustraOon   of   being   lep   alone   each   day   can  open   cause   them   to   chew   stuff,   dig   holes   or  bark  for  hours  on  end.”  Kristy   explains   further,   "WagginTails   Doggy  Daycare   is   paradise   for   dogs.   They   get   to

spend  the  whole  day  with  other  dogs,  playing  games   together   in   our   adventure   playground  and   gerng   the   exercise   and   mental  sOmulaOon  they  need.  Plus  there  are  plenty  of  cuddles  and  affecOon  from  our  staff.  You  know  every   dog   has   had   the   most   fun   possible  during  each  fun-‐filled  day,  it’s  wriden  on  their  faces  how  happy  they  are.”  And   Kristy   believes   that   as   well   as   knowing  their  dog  is  happy  and  healthy,  Doggy  Daycare  has   other   benefits   for   owners.   ‘By   spending  the   day   at   Daycare,   WagginTails   dogs   just  want  to  snooze  in  the  evening,  so  their  owners  can   save   the   walk   for   another   day.   It   means  that   aper   a   long   day’s   work   and   journey  home,  people  have  a  bit  more  quality  Ome  to  themselves  during  the  week.”     Conveniently  located  near  the  F3  at  4/348

Manns  Rd,  West  Gosford  (near  Bunning’s),  opening  Omes  are    6.15am  –  7.00pm.  And

the  services  provided  include  Doggy  Daycare,  Grooming,  Dog  Taxi  &  Dog  Training  classes.

Assistance  Dogs  Australia’s  super  puppies  have  stolen  the  month  of  October  for  their  fundraising  and  awareness  month  –  named  Dogtober  of  course!    Dogtober  is  a  way  for  people  to  take  fundraising  into  their  own  paws,  organising  doggy  themed  events  or  undertaking  a  feat  for  sponsorship  to  raise  awareness  and  much  needed  funds  for  Assistance  Dogs  Australia.

Why  not  host  a  Dog’s  Breakfast,  Hot  Dog  Day  or  a  Flea  Market?  You  could  hold  a  Dog’s  Bowl  with  your  local  ten  pin,  lawn  bowling  or  cricket  club  or  a  Dog  Paddle  event  with  the  local  swimming,  kayaking  or  nippers  club?  How  about  hosOng  your  very  own  Howl-‐o-‐ween  party  or  celebrate  Dogtober-‐fest?  Why  not  wear  a  collar  and  raise  a  dollar  through  sponsorship?

How  long  have  you  lived  on  the  Central  Coast?  I  was  born  on  the  coast  so  I  have  been  living  here  for  27  years!  Although  I'm  always  living  away  from  home  with  work,  I  love  coming  home  to  the  Coast!  Tell  us  about  your  dogs:  I  have  Kendra  a  6  year  old  Siberian  husky  we  bought  from  a  friend  who's  dog  accidentally  had  puppies.  Predator  the  3  year  old  rodweiler  and  Monroe  (or  Wiggles  as  we  call  her)  is  a  7  month  old  bulldog  who  were  both  presents  from  my  fiancé  Kyle!  What  are  their  favourite  ac[vi[es/toys?  Kendra  loves  sleeping  with  teddy  bears,  her  fave  is  "piggy"  which  she  sleeps  with  in  her  mouth-‐  it's  so  cute!  Both  Predator  &  Wiggles  fave  toys  are  each  other.  Between  those  two  they  eat  everything  I  get  them!  They  also  love  riding  in  the  back  on  the  ute  and  going  to  the  beach!  We  try  to  take  them  to  the  sand-‐dunes  every  week!  They  love  playing  in  the  ocean  and  running  up  and  down  the  beach.  I  get  such  a  good  workout  running  around  with  them.  They  also  love  sleeping  on  my  bed!!  They  are  very  spoilt.  Any  funny  stories  about  them?  Goodness!  Absolutely  too  many  to  name.  If  anyone  owns  a  bulldog  they  know  how  funny  they  are.  All  three  are  honestly  like  the  Three  Stooges,  they  are  always  doing  funny,  cute,  naughty  things!  Wiggles  always  does  funny  things  to  sneak  into  my  bed,  and  snores  very  loudly!  Adorable.  How  do  they  fit  into  your  life?  Kendra,  Preddy  and  Wiggled  are  honestly  like  my  children.  They  are  such  a  huge  part  of  our  lives.  They  sleep  inside  each  night,  come  to  work  with  us,  come  running  with  me  and  make  us  so  happy!  We  are  huge  animal  lovers  and  these  three  complete  our  world.  Predator  doesn't  like  being  without  Kendra,  and  they  all  sleep  on  each  other  and  are  very  protecOve  of  our  lidle  family!  What  do  you  think  are  some  benefits  of  owning  a  dog?  Happiness!  Dogs  and  animals  make  you  happy.  You  just  have  to  treat  them  with  love  &  respect  and  always  make  Ome  for  them  like  children.  They  make  great  friends  and  snuggle  buddies  and  will  always  make  you  smile  (unless  they  are  eaOng  the  spa  covers  or  my  favourite  shoes!)

Which  local  dog-‐friendly  places  do  you  take  them?    I  love  taking  them  to  Shelly  Beach!  They  love  running  about.  Kendra  and  Monroe  love  playing  with  other  dogs  however  Predator  isn't  very  good  with  other  dogs,  he  is  very  over  protecOve!  So  I  keep  him  on  a  long  leash  and  run  with  him  up  and  down  the  beach.  Whenever  they  get  home  they  all  are  so  exhausted  they  sleep  all  night!  We  also  like  taking  them  on  the  sand-‐dunes  at  Blacksmiths  Beach.  We  take  the  4WD  out  and  they  just  love  it!  Running  in  the  water,  swimming,  even  riding  on  the  sand-‐dunes!  Any  [ps  for  caring  for  dogs?  Make  sure  you  invest  in  gerng  the  best  dog  food  for  your  baby!  I  only  feed  them  the  best  organic  dog  food  and  RSPCA  approved  raw  meat  that  is  cruelty  free.  I  cook  them  steamed  brown  rice  and  vegetables  like  carrot  and  broccoli  and  give  them  glucosamine  tablets  and  flaxseed  oil  tablets  each  day!  The  best  thing  you  can  do  for  your  pet  is  invest  in  its  health!  My  dogs  have  never  had  any  health  problems  and  the  vets  always  say  how  clean  there  teeth  are  because  of  good  health.  Like  humans,  you  can't  put  a  price  on  health!  It  will  100%  help  them  when  they  are  older  too.  My  dogs  also  LOVE  raw  carrots,  so  I  give  them  all  raw  carrots  each  day!!!!

Highly  intelligent  yet  somewhat  stubborn  with  seemingly  boundless  energy  and  affecOon.  Ah,  the  Jack  Russell  Terrier.  Not  only  do  they  make  excellent  family  pets,  these  lidle  pooches  are  fantasOcally  loyal  and  thrive  in  a  companionship  role.    For  those  who  are  ready  for  them!  You  see,  the  JRT  is  a  working  terrier  and  has    been  for  some  200  years.  In  the  early  1800s,    they  were  bred  by  Englishman  Reverend  John  Russell,  a  hunOng  enthusiast,  to  ‘bolt  fox  from  their  dens  during  hunts’.  One  of  their  appealing  characterisOcs  was  tempered  aggressiveness,  meaning  the  JRT  would  chase      without  causing  physical  harm  to  the  animal  in    quesOon.  They  are  a  smaller  version  of  the  Parson  Russell    Terrier,  also  bred  by  the    reverend.      This  explains  a  lot.  The  preservaOon  of  this  working  ability  means  that  these  lidle  balls  of  energy  remain  athleOc,  smart  and      alarmingly  fearless  –  they  open  punch  above  their  weight!  As  a  result,  it  is  imperaOve  that  the  JRT  is  given  adequate    exercise,  sOmulaOon  and  socialisaOon.      Obedience  classes  are  a  must.  While  not  typically  aggressive,  they  may  engage  in  naughty  or  destrucOve  behaviour  if  their  needs  are  not  met.

Physically,  the  JRT  is  a  healthy  breed  with  a  long  life  span  averaging  15  years,  however  it’s  not  uncommon  to  see  19-‐year-‐olds  hopping  along  the  street  with  the  gusto  of  a  puppy.  Although  usually  robust,  this  breed  someOmes  experiences  slipping  kneecaps.  The  JRT  coat  is  smooth,  broken  (some  trace  hair)  or  rough  (significant  trace  hair).  They  do  tend  to  malt  at  the  change  of  seasons,  but  require  lidle  grooming.              Unfortunately,  many  JRT  owners  are  unprepared  for  their  pluckiness.  An  alarming  amount  are  dumped  or  abandoned  at  shelters  aper  the  puppy  stage.  They  are  perfect  for  acOve  families  and  as  guard  dogs  for  the  elderly,  but  in  both  cases  it  is  paramount  to  consider  their      exercise  requirements.  And  remember,  the  JRT  is  a  hunt-‐driven  dog,  so  is  best  kept  on  a  lead  near  roads,  even  if  trained.  Beware  their  insOnct  to  chase!      If  you’re  thinking  of  making  the      commitment,  why  not  contact  Jack  Russell  Rescue,  who  Orelessly  find  homes  for  those      that  don’t  have  one:  www.jrtrescue.net      Words  by  Elizabeth  Shingleton

Steve  Reed  was  looking  for  a  kennel  for  Milo,  his  black  Labrador  2  years  ago,  and  ended  up  buying  a  plasOc  dog  house  from  a  pet  shop  at  Wyong  North  for  $150.  “Milo  hardly  went  in  it”,  says  Steve    “  I  thought  it  was  plain  and  boring.”

Aper  checking  out  some  Omber  kennels  at  other  pet  supplies  shops,  Steve  concluded  that  these  were  not  durable  enough  for  a  large  dog.  Being  a  truck  driver  he  would  find  pallets  and  Omber  from  deliveries,  this  gave  Steve  the  idea  to  build  his  own  kennel  for  Milo.    “It  was  massive  as  I  knew  I  was  going  to  get  another  dog  as  a  companion  for  Milo”,  Steve  explains,  and  he  has  been  designing  and  building  these  wooden  dog  kennels  ever  since.

With  around  4  or  5  on  display  at  his  home  on  Wyong  Road,  Berkeley  Vale,  the  kennels  are  made  from  all  new  Omber  and  treated  pine  complete  with  a  colorbond  roof.    Call  now  to  order  a  penthouse  for  your  pooch!  Prices  start  from  $220,  custom  orders  are  very  welcome!  (Call  Steve  0432  474  209)

The   tug   rope   is   the   greatest   toy   to   have  when  playing   with   a   dog.   Instead   of   purchasing   a  knoded   rope   at   the   pet   store,  make   your   own  with   old   socks   or   t-‐shirts.   Hold   two   socks  together   and   knot   them   with   other   socks   to  create   length.   Make   the   knots   Oght   so   they  don't  give  way  while  playing.

Recycle   in   a   whole   new   way   with   bodled  water.   Combine   a   sock   and   empty   water  bodle  to  create  a  toy  your  dog  can  crunch.  Place   an  empty  or   treat-‐filled  plasOc  water  bodle  inside  an  old  sock.  Knot  the  sock  and  watch  the  fun!
