One of the most helpful prayers I’ve heard and experienced lately came from the book Invitation to the Jesus Life by Jan Johnson. She described an encounter with a person who was yelling at her. Instead of reacting and responding back in the same way, she prayed a breath prayer, “Show me the person’s heart.” As she looked at the person, listened, and tried to love her in the mo-ment, she began to see the angry person in a new way as Christ saw her.
By praying to God, we open ourselves to what God wants us to see and do. What God desires in the moment may not be just for the other person, but for inside of us too. I’ve prayed the prayer in different situations and encounters recently and have been blessed. Since we all have people who tick us off at different times, this prayer to God may just open the door for God to bring us into loving the other-whoever he or she may be.
Grace and peace, Debbie
SUPPORT IMAGINE NO MALARIA WITH MUSIC Joe Stobaugh, Grace UMC Frisco, has created a unique album called Pilgrimage. It is a collection of hymns featuring musi-cian friends and Joe’s soprano sax playing in jazz style. You can check out the music at CDBaby or iTunes. Joe is desig-nating all the proceeds from the album to Imagine No Malaria. If you like the music, then your purchase will support a great cause.
INVITATION TO THE JESUS LIFE If you haven’t heard, the journey into living the Jesus life is reaching people you know in the three groups engaging the book by Jan Johnson. If you missed joining one of the small groups, we have several cop-ies of the book if you’d like one. See Debbie Riggsby (903-243-3333) or [email protected].
UPCOMING EARLY RESPONSE TRAININGS We had 16 folks (5 from FUMC SS) at the Sept. 14th train-ing. As we go to press, the Early Response team has a call-out to help a family in Pecan Gap. We really need more folks to train as Early Responders. Here are several upcoming trainings:
October 19th– Stonebridge UMC, McKinney 8:30 am –4:30pm
November 2nd– Vista Ridge UMC, Lewisville 8:30 am –4:30pm
Go to www.northtexasumc.org. Click on the Missional Out-reach link at the bottom to find the date in the column on the right. Then complete the online registration. Special Note: Before taking the Early Response training, each partic-ipant must complete a background check and take the online MinistrySafe training. For help, call Debbie at 903-885-2185.

Jesus walks in the midst of storms, the storms of our lives. We have recently watched the fires of New Jersey, the floods of Colora-do, the shootings of the Navy Yard in Washington. Jesus wants us to be in prayer for these situations as well as all areas of our lives. He wants us to live in total communion with Him. He make intercession his priority and he wants the same for us. (Romans 8:34).
Join us for a day of focusing on the importance of prayer and spending time in prayer. Saturday October 19th, The Sweet Hour of Prayer has planned a fun day of learning more about praying for our church, our members and the world we live in. Our District Superintendent, Vic Casad will be our quest speaker.
Come join Vic, Pete and the Sweet Hour of Prayer members for a day filled with the love of God. We will board the church vans for the McKenzie lake house in Mt. Vernon at 8am, Saturday, October 19th and return by 3pm. Lunch will be provided and child care could be arranged for a fee.
The retreat is open to the first 25 ladies to sign up with Nancy in the church office. For more information, contact Sally Hamilton at 214-478-3712 or Angie Blount at 903-885-1496.
SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER RETREAT
M&M For Kids We are thrilled with our new Wednesday night program M&M, or Music and Missions! The kids are already hard at work on their Christmas program, Light of the World. This is a simple and beautiful telling of the Christmas story that includes scrip-ture reading, solos, and even some signing in other languages. Mark your calendars now for Dec. 11th when the children will present Light of the World!
M&M also includes Mission Possible Kids (we will start our next mission project next week!), games, crafts and much more! W have played a game that taught us about sin, and games to help us learn the books of the Bible. One goal for the year is for our elementary children to learn the books of the bible.
Preschoolers are discovering Jesus each week as they go through the lesson book “Jesus Loves Me”. They will sing songs, play games, and even make snacks based on a different Bible story each week, all if it designed to show them all the ways that God loves them.
Our wonderful Wednesday helpers and leaders this semester are D’Anne Chaney, Chaney Johnson, Kathy Lennon and Kaci Crow-son. Please let these wonderful ladies how much you appreciate them! Come join us every Wednesday from 6-7:30.
Welcome New Acolytes! We are training 8 new acolytes this semester: Braden Lennon, Tate Bradford, Shane Hinton, Merrin Williams, Mattie Bridges, Audrey Williams, Addie Funderburk and Hayden Funderburk. Be sure to tell these kiddos what a good job they are doing! Thank you for letting our children serve the church in this way!
Sunday School We are excited about our new curriculum from Wesley Publish-ing House! Just as John Wesley’s heart was “strangely warmed” at Aldersgate, Wesley curriculum challenges students to be im-mersed in the love of God’s own heart. Wesley Curriculum is also practical in helping students transfer what they learn to real life where they can share the all encompassing love of God with the world.
We are even more excited about our fabulous line-up of Sunday school teachers!

We are sad to say goodbye to 2 wonderful teachers this year, Jane Claypool and Sarah Maddux. When you see them in church, please let them know what their years of service have meant to you and your children. Jane and Sarah, you have a lifetime passport to Children’s World...come and visit any time.
FUNday School Is Back! Kids, bring your parents to Sunday School on October 13th (2nd Sunday of the even months) for a fun and unique church experience you can all enjoy!

Your recent food drive was a huge success, as always. Without your donation, two hun-dred fifty families would have not received their weekly food bags.
Summer is a critical time of the year, because the Dallas Food Bank has a very limited amount of food for us to buy. It is wonderful to have friends like you who care about our Clients needs.
The Directors of Community Chest and I appreciate your kindness and generosity. Please keep this Agency and our Clients in your prayers.
Thank you very much for your support and donation for the Pack the Bus school supply drive! You are so kind. We are so thankful.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME!
If you think that you will help with children, youth, or a mis-sion event at First UMC, we’re inviting you to be a part of the MinistrySafe process NOW!!! All our volunteers are required to do the MinistrySafe online training and have a background check. Talk with Adrienne (children), Jason (youth), or Deb-bie (mission and outreach) about connecting with Minis-trySafe. For the training, we’ll need an email address. For the background check, there is an application. Thanks for helping us make First UMC a safe place for all God’s children.
Would a Stephen Minister Help? Having a tough time? Do you know someone who is? If you would like someone to talk with or to help someone you care about in a life challenge, why don’t you give Debbie Riggsby a call at 903-885-2185 to find out how a Stephen Minister would help.
New Prayer Ministry If you desire prayer, you are invited to come to the communion rail near the pulpit after the worship service each Sunday. Our Stephen Ministers will listen and pray with you.
