Im so excited about our new Wednesday night schedule! Wednesdaynights are fast becoming a major gathering place for our folks inthe middle of their busy week, and were seeing lots of new faces. In case youve missed it, heres whats going on:

Our Childrens ministryits called Wiredis showing ourchildren how better to follow Jesus.

Our high school and middle school students celebrate a greatworship service in their re-designed worship center withEncounter 431.

Our midweek service now has two sessions at 4 and 6:15 pm,with supper in between. I bring the same message both times soyou can choose which time best suits your schedule.

Many of our Sunday School classes and other small groupsmeet across campus, praying, building friendships andhanging out together.

Much of our music ministry rehearses during the evening.

If youre looking for a vibrant and inspirational time in the middle of yourweek, LBC is the place to be. During the month of October, I will teach a

special Apologetics series called Why Should I Believe? Each week, wewill talk about the grounds for belief in core Christian convictions. Our faithisnt something out of thin air; we have a reason to believe. What a greatoccasion for you to bring a friend with you to one of the two services onWednesday night, especially if that friend doesnt know the Lord! The fourmessages will be:

Why Should I Believe in God?Why Should I Believe the Bible is True?

Why Should I Believe that Jesus is the Only Way to Heaven? Why Should I Believe that All Religions Arent the Same?

The final Wednesday night of October is our biggest childrensevent of the year, Light Up the Night. There wont be any other

activities on campus that night. Especially for our families, this event is aperfect occasion to come to a seasonal celebration, complete with Trunk orTreat, rides, music, face painting and all sorts of other events. Even moreimportantly, this is an easy way you can connect with your friends andneighbors and bring them to church with you.

Finally, please keep in mind that this month well be acting onthe proposed 2014 church budget. Our church leadership has beenworking through the last few months preparing this budget and you willreceive the details in a special mailout in the next few days. This is a time ofgreat celebration because of Gods continuing faithfulness in our churchministry, and we want all of you to share in the excitement our leadershipfeels as we look to the future. Your vision and

generosity in giving makes our ministrypossible, as we make disciples in Lexingtonand around the world.

This month, the LBC Praise & Worship choir will be singing this song thatwas written by Ralph Carmichael back in the 1960s. Ralph is now 86 years oldand was one of the pioneers for changing the music of the church back in theJesus Movement of the 70s. Ralph teamed up with Kurt Kaiser to give us Tell it

Like It Is and Natural High, two of the very first youth musicals in the late60s. He also wrote The Savior is Waiting, The New 23rd, I Looked For Loveand many more compositions that helped shape our music in worship.

    A Quiet Place

    Dan WilliamsAssociate Pastor, [email protected]

With the daily dose of disturbing news we see happening around us inthis country and around the world, we have got to find that place of solitudeevery day in order to keep everything in proper perspective as a child ofGod and also to stay prepared for receiving marching orders from ourHeavenly Father.

Our Savior needed to do this how much more do we? Mark 1:35 says,And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, He went out, anddeparted into a solitary place, and there prayed. I love the way The Message(MSG) renders Matthew 6:6:

Heres what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so youwont be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply andhonestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and

you will begin to sense His grace.

    Fall Semester Has Begun

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

    ~ Acts 4:31

We have successfully kicked off the fall semester. God has already donesome amazing things in the lives of our students. One of the many blessingshas been Encounter 431 on Wednesday nights. Encounter 431 is based on Acts4:31, and we have seen middle and high school students encounter God in newand exciting ways. We gather on Wednesday nights from 6 to 7:30 pm in TheCity for this worship experience.

September was the start of our ManUp and Girls, Inc. ministries. On thefirst Thursday of every month, guys in grades 6-12 gather at the home ofDuane and Terri Davis for Bible study at 7 pm. Girls, Inc. meets for Bible Studyon the third Thursday of each month at 7 pm with middle school girls meetingat the home of Torrey and Crystal Hightower and high school girls meeting atthe home of Keith and Danise Stokeld. Its a chance each month for yourstudents to fellowship and dig into Gods word.

October has a number of activities for you to get involvedin. Make sure you dont miss out!

This summer, I participated in a

mission trip to Harmons, Jamaica. AsI prepared for the trip, I prayed forthe people I would meet andopportunities to share Gods love.

While in Harmons, my team and Ihelped build three houses, pulledweeds and pruned plants and hauledequipment used in construction.

We were also able to buildrelationships with the people ofHarmons. On Thursday, several of usspent the day at an infirmary for

patients with mental or physicaldisabilities. Most patients were leftthere on their 18th birthdays becausetheir family no longer wanted to orno longer could afford to take care ofthem. I knew it was going to be hardfor me. I prayed for God to hold myhand. It ended up being my mostrewarding experience.

Once we stepped off the bus, wewere hugged and kissed by thefamous Ms. Patricia, a patient at theinfirmary. She would say love, love, love over and over again. She andeveryone at the infirmary had somuch love to share. These peoplehad God living in them and they werenot afraid to express His love. Theywere perfectly content with us sittingnext to them reading scripture andsinging songs. Thats all they wanted, human companionship, a friend tolisten and share. Thats what we didfor the day. I was glad I stepped outof my comfort zone and God was

right there holding my hand.We get so caught up in our

day to day lives that we losethe importance of true love. I amreminded of the verse in FirstCorinthians... if we do not have love,we have nothing.

Most everyone knows the story of the little boy who shared his food, fiveloaves and two fish, with the crowds who came to listen to Jesus. Its cool thatGod used what a young boy gave and did something amazing with it.

In July, five sixth graders and some moms and dads left Lexington to seewhat God could do with what we had to give while in Nicaragua. Here are someof the things we did:

We played ball with the children of Ometepe Island and madenew friends so that we could share Gods love.

We planned activities for a local church on the island and around50 kids came to hear about Jesus.

We built a wall for a school to help keep it from flooding duringheavy rains.

We visited an open air school for over 600 kids in Managua andGod showed us how blessed we are and how we should pray forothers around the world.

We spent time serving with our families and began building bondsthat will last forever.

When that little boy with the five loaves and two fish got home, I wonderwhat stories he told to his family and friends? Im sure he was amazed at whatGod could do when we give a little bit of ourselves. ~ Ryan Krick

Weve often talked inour family about theimportance of servingothers. As our childrenhave gotten older, wesee them settling into a

culture of instantgratification andexpectations for aneasy life. We dontwant them growing upunaware of the hurt andpain that exists all overthe world and we wantthem to have a strong desire to serve God and to give toothers the hope that only He can give.

When I heard about the opportunity to take my oldest son, Ryan, toNicaragua this summer, I knew I couldnt pass it up. As the greatest influence inmy childs life, he needs to see me serving, and better yet, serve alongside me.

So, we packed our bags and went. It was the first international mission trip forboth of us. I had prepared myself for the cultural differences and the povertywe would see. But I was not prepared for the heart change we wouldexperience. Gratefulness takes on a whole new meaning now.

I was able to serve with Ryan, share the experience with him, talk abouthow all people need God and pray with him in a way more meaningful thanwould have been possible at home. I saw Ryans heart soften and become moreflexible for God to use.

After returning from the trip, we both feel God tugging on our hearts togive and serve. I pray we will have a lifetime of opportunities, at home andaway, to share Christs love. ~ Kevin Krick

Amazed At What God Could DoNicaragua 2013

Encounter 431 is our midweekstudent service based on Acts 4:31.That verse talks about the power ofcoming together for worship and

prayer and how the Holy Spirit leadsin such meeting times.

However, the verse doesn't endthere. It concludes by saying thatsuch encounters give believersboldness to go out and share themessage of the gospel and live it out.

I believe this midweek service isonly the beginning of a time whenour students will boldly take themessage of Jesus to their schoolsand communities.

Come bepart of what Godis doing atEncounter 431.

Lex Kids is committed to partneringwith families. There is no way we coulddo this without also committing to helpingparents date. For this reason, we arerelaunching The Great Date Challenge.

The Great Date Challenge is anintentional time for parents, and we dothe hard work for you! When you drop offyour children in our care, you will begiven a complete pre-planned date kit.

You will also have four hours to havequality conversation, create memoriesand simply, have fun together. Dont missout! Registration begins Oct. 13 and willbe open until were at capacity.

Lets be serious. Life is busy. Sometimes our marriages get put on theback burner. Too often, my husband, Christopher, and I find ourselves doubledating with Mr. and Mrs. TV, Mr. and Mrs. FB, or Mr. and Mrs. No Minutes Free.

    Our lives are distracted.

In preparation for our first child, Coleman, we are reading the bookOnBecoming Babywiseby Gary Ezzo. We were surprised to see that the firstchapter was completely dedicated to marriage. It describes the parallel betweena healthy marriage and healthy children. The author writes, We believe that ifyou really love your children, you will give them the gift of love, security and asense of belonging that can only be derived from an on-going demonstration ofyour love for each other as a husband and wife.

This makes sense. We are betterparents when we work to be betterhusbands and wives.

Anne Marie and Coulter Bellremember visiting LBC for the firsttime three years ago. They saw a fewfriends they knew that Sundaymorning, but both remember feelingnervous and overwhelmed.

Over the summer, the siblingselementary school asked students tothink about leadership andcommunity service project ideas. They decided they could help greet

kids visiting LBC while adult churchmembers were welcoming theirparents. They planned simpleconversation starters like asking forkids names and where they go toschool, and thought of a few thingsto share about themselves.

I want kids to feel good aboutour church and to feel welcome, sothey will want to come back, saidCoulter, a second grader.

They met with ChildrensMinistries Director Maegan Bolding totalk about their ideas, and learnedabout how our church welcomesguests. The new greeters took theirplaces near the preschool informationdesk in early August.

At the end of a long day with a teething toddler in his terrible twos and aconstantly hungry newborn baby, I admit it is sometimes challenging to findeven an ounce of joy within my overtired and cranky self. I sometimes findmyself getting through the day rather than pausing to enjoy the joyfulmoments within the trials of motherhood. In James 1:2, the Bible says to

consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds. I think I canspeak on behalf of most mothers in that I dont jump at the opportunity toclean crushed goldfish from my rug or to wake up every two hours at night forweeks on end. But what am I missing if I choose frustration and exhaustionover joy? What blessing am I missing that God intended to share with me?How many opportunities have I missed to share the gospel with my children orto grow in my walk with Christ?

There is joy in every struggle; we just sometimes have to look for it. WhenIm overwhelmed because its the end of the day and I still have laundry to do,dinner to fix and babies to put to bed, maybe I should thank God for yetanother opportunity to find joy in the messes. Thank You, Lord, for these littlefootprints of sand from the sandbox throughout my house for You blessed uswith a healthy child who can walk and run. Thank You, Lord, for those little

hands and the chance to teach my little boy about cleanliness. Lord, I cantseem to make it to anything on time and Im so overwhelmed. What are Youtrying to teach me?

If I wake up in the morning and make the choice to thank God for the littletrials I may face throughout the day and ask Him to show me what I can learnfrom Him, how different will my day go than if I choose the route of worry, fearor bitterness? Never have I been more aware of my own weaknesses and myneed of Gods grace as I have as a mother. Without the constant trials ofmotherhood and the awareness of our weaknesses, we would not be able toexperience the joy of raising young men and women. How else can I growstrong in my weaknesses if I dont develop an ability to trust Him to lean onHim on those messy days where I want to hide in the closet until bedtime?

MOPS is a place where moms can come together and share those stories ofno sleep, dirty laundry, shower-less days and temper tantrums and fill up withpromises of prayer, hope and joy! My hope for this new community of mothersis that we are able to challenge each other to find joy in our everyday ups anddowns of mothering. ~ Kristie Thilking

Flu season is almost here and I am reluctantly anticipating another flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that between3,000 and 49,000 people die each year from the flu and I am not taking anychances. A vaccination is one precaution I take to live a healthy lifestyle. A flushot protects me by building up my immune systems, creating a firewallbetween my healthy cells and the invading disease. The flu shot not onlybenefits me but my entire family, friends and coworkers. When I am sick, I getcranky, impatient and irritable much like a spoiled six year old boy who isntgetting his way.

I also get cranky, impatient and irritable when Iam angry. Proverbs 25:28 says, A man who does notcontrol his temper is like a city whose wall is broken

down. This man has no protection from invaders; heis defenseless, helpless, exposed. We dont wake up inthe morning and decide that today is a great day to beangry. It just happens because of events in our lives, such as traffic on the way to work, being wronglyaccused, inconsiderate people, rumors being spreadabout us, or long waits on the phone or in someonesoffice. We often become angry automatically.

When anger has become a habit in our lives, it balances out all the hurt andwrongs other people have inflicted on us in life. Our anger manifests in physicalsymptoms such as rapid heartbeat, tightness in the chest, or feeling hot;behavioral symptoms such as pacing, clenching fists, raising our voice or

staring; emotional symptoms such as feelings of fear, hurt, jealousy and guilt;and cognitive symptoms such as hostile self-talk, images of aggression orrevenge. These cues often happen before we are really aware of the anger wehave in the situation.

Inoculating this anger requires a personalized plan that works for you witha variety of tools. These tools take the focus off the event that has happenedand shift the focus back to Christ. Some of the tools you may want to include inyour toolbox are:

    Praying for peace (Philippians 4:6-7)

Talking with a supportive friend (Proverbs 27:17)

    Taking a timeout (Psalms 46:10)

Thinking about good things (Philippians 4:8)

Your own toolbox will include many other tools that you have found orborrowed from others that work best in your life. As you understand your angerbetter and implement the tools that work for you to overcome your anger, youwill be developing healthy habits for a lifetime.

Over the years on the mission field, many ofour fondest memories and most impactful workbegan from volunteer groups like LexingtonBaptist Church. Heres a special story about avolunteer named Dave. Dave traveled to thesouth of North Africa to one of the mostfundamental Muslim cities in the country. When Dave traveled backto the capital, he told me of a shop owner named Sami that he gave a Bible tothat I needed to follow up with as soon as possible. Dave had never seenanybody under the conviction of the Holy Spirit before like Sami, not even inthe States. I decided to make a visit down to the south of the country to lookfor this man. As I meandered through the shops of the Medina trying to find

Sami, God reminded me how faithful Dave was to come all the way from theStates to be in such a place to be used by God.

As I turned the corner, my eyes met a young shop owner who was readinga small green Arabic New Testament. I knew this must be Sami. He looked atme intensely and tried to stand up, but he went straight down on his knees andbegan to cry in front of me. I was stunned and really did not know how toreact. So many times in North Africa, the Word never seems to take hold. Ibegan to cry as well. Sami held up this Bible to me and asked me if a guy fromthe States named Dave had sent me to him. Sami hugged me and said all hewanted to do was to have me explain what he had read. It was getting closeto lunch so he invited me to his house, which is common in North Africa, evenwith strangers.

As we were waiting for our lunch to be prepared, Sami jumped up from thetable and went outside to his patio. He returned with a soiled brown bag thatcontained a Bible that was over 100 years old a gift to his family from a Jesuitpriest from the island of Djerba. He had kept it hidden all these years. Westarted crying again as the Kingdom of God was with us. Sami told me that hiswife had burned all his Christian material except this Bible. He also said thatuntil he met Dave, he thought there were no real Christians in the whole world. He had been praying for 30 years for somebody to come to him to help himunderstand the Bible.

Sami prayed to receive Christ as his Savior that afternoon. I cantremember a time when I felt the presence of the Lord any stronger than thatday. As we returned to visit Sami, he told me that he and his family spoke the

Berber language. Our family had been called to work with this particular peoplegroup only a few months before I met him. Sami began to help us interpret theBible into the Berber language.

I will forever be thankful that Dave decided to take a short-term missiontrip overseas. Dave was used by God to help bring the Gospel to two unreachedand unengaged Berber groups in North Africa. As you begin to think about amission trip, remember that God will use your faithfulness and obedience to doa mighty work wherever you are called to go. This summer I had the privilege to be the Missions Ministry intern. Godtruly led me to this position. A year ago, I applied to the International MissionBoard to work internationally this past summer. I had been assigned to aneight-week trip to Taiwan. I was so excited and thought this was Gods willbeing played out in my life. Little did I know. The rest of the team for this tripwas not able to go and that along with other complications led to God closingthe door to go. I was truly distraught. I didnt understand why God would denyme the ability to serve people and seemed to turn His back on my obedience tofulfill His great commission. However, He was there the whole time, like Healways is.

Pastor Mike heard about my failed plans and my heart for missions and putme in touch with Alyce Gilliam, Associate Pastor for Missions. She offered methe job of summer missions intern, and I worked with Alyce, Mr. Cal (Cal

Yngve), and Ms. Sylvia (Sylvia Cartin) throughout a summer that was truly

incredible. What I didnt realize is that my heart was not truly passionate aboutserving the Lord internationally; I simply wanted an adventure. This summer,

Alyce taught me that international missions does not begin when your planelands; it begins by preparing your heart while youre still at home.

God showed me how to do just that by allowing me to go with Alyce toOklahoma to look for opportunities for our church to serve the victims of thespring tornados. He allowed me to see how our pastoral staff works together ona daily basis on things that I as a church member had taken for granted. Andalthough I had originally thought being radically obedient meant doingsomething radical like serving somewhere dangerous or foreign, I was taughtthat radical obedience often is just doing something that youre radicallyuncomfortable with.

God sent me to Instanbul, Turkey, with a team from our church to serve asa childcare helper for the missionaries children currently on the field in theMiddle East. He took something I thought sounded insignificant and changedmy life. I now have relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ from all overthe world who are seeking encouragement just as we are here at home. Ourteam leader, Mrs. Harriet Kinard, along with everyone else on the trip, remindedme that God could use anybody, anytime, any place. The key is doing it on HIStime. Not our own.

Ill never be able to thank the entire church staff and the team I went withfor all of the wisdom and love they poured into me this summer. I truly feelprepared to make a difference at North Greenville University, where I ambeginning my freshmen year. But I also hope to continue to make disciples inLexington and around the world.

I want to encourage you as LBC members to go. Maybe not to other side ofthe world, but to your neighbors house or to the cubicle or classroom next toyours. Or get involved in one of the many mission opportunities LBC offerswithin Lexington itself.

Above all else, the most important thing I learned this summer is thatmissions are Biblical and that being missional is intentional. Be intentional inbuilding relationships with the lost around you. Be intentional about being amissionary where you are right now. Theres a reason God has you where youare. Believe in and find hope in that.

When I was growing up, I thought Missions was something mysteriousthat happened in exotic locations like Africa or China. My kids have learned that

missions can and do happen in the church parking lot. When we joined LBC over ten years ago, our kids were three months, one

year and three years old. Not long after we joined, the Oil Change Ministry waslaunched. My husband, being automotively inclined, was quick to sign up tohelp. The mission was to provide widows and single mothers with a car servicethat, while important, may not be financially feasible for them. My husband washooked immediately! He realized how vital transportation is for mothers ofyoung children and anyone who lives alone in Lexington. If you and your familydepend on one vehicle for transportation to work, day care, school, the doctorand the store, that vehicle needs to be maintained and dependable.

My initial involvement was limited to baking treats for the hospitality portionof the event. My husbands enthusiasm was contagious and soon, the rest of

the family would attend the events to help with childcare and hospitality. Ourkids would collect toys, games and videos to share with the children who wereat the event with their mothers. As my husband became more involved in theministry, I became a part of the registration team. Side by side, we greeted theladies and gathered the information we needed to get to work on their cars.

As our kids grew, they joined us outside. Now, our 15 year old daughterconfidently greets the clients and helps out new volunteers. The last couple ofevents have found her happily covered in oil as she got a chance to help herdad actually perform oil changes. Our boys, now 11 and 13, help with the hornand light check station and work at the oil reclamation station.

What lessons have we learned through involvement in the Oil ChangeMinistry? We are a part of the Body of Christ! The ministry is a success becauseof the diversity of people and talents that come together to make it work. My

heart is so happy to see every age group represented at the oil change. Ourkids get to work with senior citizens, newlyweds, singles, families and the ladieswho bring their cars to us. Each individual uses their skills to serve. Our kidshave experienced the Body of Christ working together as God intended.

The door to spiritual ministry is often opened with a physical act of service. Our belief is that the oil change is just a tool to provide an opportunity tominister to the spiritual needs of the ladies. They come to us sick, discouraged, recently widowed, burdened and overwhelmed. Inside, away from the cars, wepray, cry, laugh, hug and do the real work of the ministry. Our kids know thatsometimes the way to a hurting persons heart is through their oil filter!

Finally, our kids know that God is faithful to meet our needs. Countlesstimes we have gone to bed on Friday night unsure if enough volunteers would

show up. God has provided. On occasion, we have been asked for event dateswhen we werent sure how our budget would be met. God has provided. Oncewe were overwhelmed with cars to be serviced. The men at the event calledtheir friends and once again, God provided. We were growing weary in ourministry. God provided a retired couple to come and lighten the load. My kidshave experienced Gods faithfulness and their faith in Him is stronger.

Now our kids are Oil Change ambassadors. They have invited neighbors, teachers and church members to come work at the events. Why would they dothat? Because they have also learned that the work of missions is a blessingthat is best when shared with others.

On Saturday, August 24,a group of men, women and kidsmet at 7 am behind the Family LifeCenter to prepare for the 9 amopening of the Oil Change MinistryEvent. We were greeted by a line of

cars belonging to single moms andwidows, many of them returningcustomers. These women come toLBC three times a year to receive asafety inspection and oil change, free of charge. While they wait fortheir cars, they share refreshmentsand conversation in the Family LifeCenter with a group of LBC folks.

While others are getting downand dirty (really dirty) servicing thecars, relationships are being builtover a cup of coffee and a doughnutor two. In August, this interactiontook place with the 46 drivers thatcame to LBC that morning, manyneeding more than an oil change. They may be dealing with lifechanges due to divorce, loss of a

job, sickness or other changes thathave impacted their lives. They maybe seeking more than an oil change;they may need a life change thatonly Christ can give.

For one mom at an earlier oil

change event, it was her first stepinside a church since the breakup ofher family several months before.Long after the oil change finished,as tears flowed, she shared heranger and hurt. She admitted shemissed her relationship with Christ. This encounter may be the start ofrebuilding that relationship.

Oil change is not the objectivehere life change is.
