connue to liaise with the family and we will be discussing with them an appropriate and

Piano Evening
Thirteen of our
wonderfully talented
students took part in
our September Piano
Evening. The evening
comprised an eclecc
mix of piano pieces
from Beethoven to
Yiruma including self ‐arrangements
and improvisaons
alongside more
tradional music. The
students once again
displayed their
commitment,
composure,
self ‐discipline and
fineness. For some of the performers this was only their first or second experience of performing in front of an audience and
for our
more
mature
players
this
was
an opportunity
to illustrate
the
fantas
c progress
they
are
making.
Thank
you
to all
who took part, it really was an evening to remember!

September the A level

part in a Biology
Masterclass at Newcastle
University. They analysed
DNA samples to deter‐
mine the culprit of the
crime using specialist
analycal equipment.
They even had me to
visit the Bodyworlds
exhibion at the Centre
for Life which proved to
be both intriguing and
disgusng all at the same
me, a must for any
Biology enthusiast
Year 6 Open Evening The Year 6 open evening is one of the highlights of the History Department, where not only do we get the opportunity to
show off what our department does, but also to imagine ourselves to be in a diff erent part of History for one night. This
year, we travelled back to 1920s America, which is also part of our controlled assessment unit in Year 9 as well as one of our
Year 9 study Units. As you can see we had a 'swell me'!
The Chess Club connues on WEDNESDAYS, 3.15‐4.15pm in the library, and it has been great to see many new Year 7
students become involved in chess since they joined English Martyrs School in September. The new chess clocks are allowing games to be completed more rapidly and this adds a lile more excitement to games. Players may well be leading in some
games, but may lose on me instead! Don’t forget that chess sets and boards are always available from the librarians
throughout the week, so why not have a game before school starts, at lunchmes, or aer school if you can’t make
Wednesdays?
We are currently trying to arrange a SPEED CHESS TOURNAMENT (with
prizes) in the run up to Christmas, to take place one aernoon in school
me. Places will be limited, but if you are interested you can always
contact Mr Edwards in advance of the formal announcement. More
details will follow soon.
Finally, a number of complete beginners have come to Chess Club to
learn about the game. To help these ‐and others who might be a lile unsure about geng involved in chess as a hobby – we will be
producing a short guide to chess, outlining the basic moves and a few
basic ideas on strategy, hints, ps etc. Once you know the value of the
pieces and how they move – then it’s just pracce and experience (even
if you inially lose more than you win!) and you’ll soon find yourself
improving fast. Give it a go!

On Thursday 25th September, ten year 8 Students, selected for their hard work and enthusiasm in language lessons, took part in a celebraon day for the European Day of Languages at St John’s School and Sixth Form College, Bishop Auckland. On
