THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO2
Welcome
It is always a pleasure to be part of the University of Waikato
graduation ceremonies acknowledging the hard work and
successes of our graduates. Equally enjoyable is seeing the
pride of whānau and friends, many of whom travel a long way
to join us for graduation.
Some of you will have decided to stay with us to study for higher
degrees, but many of you will be leaving the region, and possibly
the country, to embark on new careers. I hope that you depart
with fond memories of your university years, and prepared for
a fulfilling future.
What you have learned during your time at Waikato, in and
outside lectures and tutorials, will stay with you, not just in your
work, but in your day-to-day lives as you face new and exciting
challenges. I wish you well.
Rt Hon Jim Bolger ONZ
Chancellor
University of Waikato
It gives me great pleasure to be part of graduation ceremonies on Te
Kohinga Mārama Marae and at Claudelands. Graduation reminds
us of the hard work, focus and achievements of our students, and
the contributions of those who have provided financial, physical
and emotional support for them along the way.
Some of you will be the first in your family to graduate from
university, and perhaps you have started a new family trend, while
others of you will be upholding a long tradition of tertiary study.
Whatever your background, you have travelled a path that has
allowed you to explore new ideas, exposed you to the frontiers of
research in your major area of study, and provided you with skills
and knowledge that will serve you well in future employment and
contributions to society. Congratulations to you all.
Wherever you go, I would encourage you to stay connected with
your university friends and your alma mater, by visiting us online,
attending University and alumni events and coming back to visit if
you have the chance.
Professor Neil Quigley
Vice-Chancellor
University of Waikato

Nō te tau 2007 Ka whakahōnoretia ia ki te New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) mō ana tākoha ki te Iwi Māori. Inārā ia nei, ka hia nei ngā tau ko Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere MNZM tērā e whakapau ana i ōna kaha, mō tana Iwi, he oti rā mō Tauranga Moana te take, ka tīhē te mauri ora.
Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere, MNZM, has spent decades working for his people.
He can whakapapa to Ngāi Tamarawaho, Ngāti Rangi hapu of Ngāti Ranginui, and Ngāi Te Rangi, two of the principal tribes from the Tauranga Moana region, and including Ngāti Awa – is an acknowledged leader, an exponent of tribal lore and narratives and a man of mana who is able to draw his people together.
Mr Ngatoko Rahipere is an example of someone who selflessly gives of his time and skills for the public good, is passionate about the role and power of education to enable people to meet their aspirations and has led many initiatives linked to the University of Waikato, including the establishment of the Maharaia Winiata Research Institute in Tauranga.
He was deeply involved in the Te Kotahitanga research programme established under Te Kura Toi Tangata Faculty of Education, providing strong cultural guidance while keeping those who were not Māori culturally safe in their research.
Mr Ngatoko Rahipere is a staunch advocate of the long standing relationship between Ngāti Ranginui and the Kingitanga, which recognises his outstanding leadership and knowledge.
He has led by example in many areas and holds enormous respect across the political spectrum. He was one of a team instrumental in advancing the return of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) to the people and his expertise and knowledge in tikanga and kawa, has ensured the mountain is protected and its cultural integrity is maintained. He provided strong leadership to his Iwi Ngati Ranginui as they navigated toward Raupatu Settlement in April, 2012.
In 2007 he became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to Māori and over many years has given exemplary service to his community of Tauranga Moana.
Honorary Doctorates
An Honorary Doctorate is the most prestigious award that the University of
Waikato can bestow. For his significant contribution to the University, the
Waikato region and the wider New Zealand community, the University is
pleased to award the following worthy recipient:
GRADUATION PROGRAMME OCTOBER 2015 7
Fanfare
Pou Whenua
The Processional Fanfare for brass quintet and percussion was written
by Associate Professor Martin Lodge from the University of Waikato’s
Conservatorium of Music.
The ceremonial carved Māori mace being used in the Marae ceremony
represents the strong links between the University and Māori.
It was written in 2014 to mark the University of
Waikato’s 50th anniversary. The work is original
except for a snippet of the popular graduation
song Gaudeamus Igitur (see page 55), inserted
by Associate Professor Lodge to acknowledge
the great academic tradition of universities in the
western world.
The Processional Fanfare is played as the University
graduands and staff ceremonially enter the hall and
take the stage for graduation and it is anticipated
that the new fanfare will be played at University
of Waikato graduation ceremonies from now on.
In 1965, just a year after the University of Waikato
was established, Kīngitanga head Koroki invited
founding University of Waikato Chancellor and
Hamilton Mayor Denis Rogers, along with 20
University of Waikato graduates, to Tūrangawaewae
Marae in Ngaruawahia.
There he presented the fledgling institution with the
carved taonga to be used as ceremonial mace. The
piece was carved by master carver Piri Poutapu, who
established a carving school at Tūrangawaewae in
1932, and when not being used, it sits in pride of
place at the head of the University Council chamber.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO52
A Brief History of the University
The University of Waikato had its genesis in 1956
when a small group of visionary individuals began
working towards founding a university for the
people of the South Auckland region.
A college, a sub-branch of Auckland University,
was established in 1959 and in 1965, after opening
its doors in 1964, the University of Waikato was
officially opened by the then Governor-General,
Sir Bernard Fergusson (later Lord Ballantrae).
From modest beginnings, on what was largely
farmland and with a handful of temporary buildings
and few staff, the University of Waikato now has a
student population of more than 12,000, including
nearly 1,800 postgraduate students. Each year
about 4,000 students graduate.
In 2015, the University has nearly 1500 academic
and professional staff, and in the next two years
its contribution to the economy is expected to
reach the $1 billion mark.
The University is recognised for its strong research
and teaching and has forged productive international
links with more than 110 universities.
THE CAMPUS
Our Hamilton campus, with grounds covering 65
hectares, continues to be a source of community
pride. The grounds include sports fields, walkways,
three lakes, extensive gardens and more than
6,000 trees.
At the end of 2011, we opened the new
$30 million Student Centre which houses the
library, computers, meeting and relaxation
spaces. It has a 5 Green Star rating from the
New Zealand Green Building Council, recognising
the environmental and sustainable features of the
building’s design. The conception and completion
of the Student Centre is a further demonstration
of our commitment to the delivery of a world-
class education while providing our students with
a dynamic student experience.
This will be further enhanced by the new Law
and Management building which will be open to
students early next year.
Planning has already begun for a new campus in
downtown Tauranga.
The University of Waikato Vision
is to offer:
» Excellence – to provide world-
class teaching and research.
» Distinctiveness –
to have a unique place
in tertiary education.
» International connectedness –
to be benchmarked against
the best.
To achieve this we invest in the best people
in every role, the best facilities and the best
systems and structures which allow us to
operate a financial model that is sustainable.

World Rankings
Our Commitment
The University of Waikato is committed to creating
and building knowledge for the future. We deliver a
world-class education and research portfolio within
a dynamic and distinctive university environment
with strong international connections.
The University of Waikato/Te Whare Wānanga o
Waikato plays an essential leadership role in the
prosperity of our region and our country.
We are a New Zealand institution that looks at
the world from a New Zealand perspective. We
sit at the heart of a community of strong regional
partnerships and take pride in the extent to which
we reflect and serve the strengths and interests of
our region.
We are also an international university. We
consciously measure our performance against
internationally established criteria, and our teachers,
researchers and students inspire, and are inspired
by, an international community of scholars.
We are committed to the recruitment and retention
of world-class staff who excel at teaching, research
and management in areas that are of particular
strategic value to New Zealand. We pursue a
research and research-management strategy that
supports our country's nation-building policies
and promises a generous return in terms of our
nation's identity and the wealth and wellbeing of
New Zealanders.
We adhere to the concept of a university education
that is, by definition, research-led. Through
sustained research intensity and the attraction of
high levels of external research funding from public
sector and industry sources, we aim to maintain a
highly competitive research profile.
We are committed to meaningful partnerships
under the Treaty of Waitangi and to providing
leadership in research, scholarship and education
relevant to the needs and aspirations of iwi and
Māori communities.
We have developed, or are in the process of
developing, world-class research platforms that
take us through the research pipeline from discovery
to application and commercialisation. Sustainability
in all its forms – environmental, economic, social
and cultural – is a strong emerging theme in many
of these research platforms.
By its nature, sustainability is future-focused and
rooted in new ways of thinking and new ways of
tackling old problems. The University of Waikato
is proud to lay claim to leading the way to a
sustainable future.
We are proud to be ranked 338 in the world by
the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds Limited) World
University Rankings 2015. This sees a climb in
the rankings of over 60 places from 2014 in
which we were ranked 405 in the world. Our
university stands proudly on the world stage
as an institution that provides a future-focused
international education and plays an active
part in global research. Last year QS ranked
10 subjects taught at Waikato in the top 200
in the world.
Our rankings are a reflection of our strengths
as a university. Our ability to challenge, inspire
and prepare our students to be future-leaders.
It is a recognition of our research that is
tackling global issues.
It’s an acknowledgement of our academic staff
who are committed to constantly improving on
the education that they offer to our students.
This commitment has shaped the thousands of
Waikato University graduates who are sought
after by employers all over the world.
Times Higher Education ranks the University of
Waikato 61st out of 100 “most international”
universities in the world. This ranking reflects
the truly global education that is received by
students studying at Waikato. It also takes
into account the ratio of international staff
and students on campus and the proportion
of research papers being generated with an
international co-author.
THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO54
Ceremonial Traditions
Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the 12th century
when the first universities emerged in Europe.
The organisation of medieval universities was
modelled on the established institutions of the
day – the church, the monastery and the guild.
Latin was the language used by medieval scholars,
and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and
‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universitas
means a guild or union, and universities started as
a scholastic guild – a self-constituted community
of teachers and scholars.
The word graduate comes from the Latin word
gradus, which means step. Admission to study a
bachelors degree was the first step taken towards
completing a university education. The second step
was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master
of Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to
teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral,
originally granted teaching licences.
CEREMONIAL ROBES AND
ACADEMIC DRESS
In the Middle Ages the corporate existence of
universities was recognised and sanctioned by
civil or ecclesiastical authority. The regalia worn
by graduates and university staff today reflect
this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by
the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord
Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic
staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval
clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday
medieval garment, although the coloured lining was
a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university
and degree.
