The TempleSpring 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of our beloved Temple.

Join us for an exciting year of enriching cultural events, substantive programs, fun-filled family activities, and meaningful Shabbat

experiences to engage every age and stage!On February 28, 2017, Atlanta’s Tony-Award-winning

Alliance Theatre will debut on the main stage an adap-tation of Melissa Fay Green’s The Temple Bombing. Susan Booth, artistic director of the Alliance, has contracted with the Tectonic Theater Project in New York City to write and direct this docu-drama that resonates so deeply within our Tem-ple family and the entire Atlanta community. We will have the opportunity to reflect on and review our history of promoting social justice and its meaning in the 21st century.

Harkening back to our 125th celebration, we again will gather in Symphony Hall for an evening of music by Jewish composers. On April 19, 2017, Robert Spano, conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orches-

tra, has planned a program that will highlight the career of Leonard Bernstein. The program will conclude with a festive seated

dinner in the Taylor Lobby of the High Museum of Art.For our religious school families, we will celebrate fall

2017 with a fun-filled birthday bash—including games, surprises, and, of course, a big cake!

These events will be a source of pride in our rich his-tory and strengthen our ties within the Temple family. All Temple events scheduled throughout the year, including

Brockey-Rothschild Institute, MLK Shabbat, etc., will have a special connection to our 150th celebration. Stay tuned for

our closing celebration events in the spring of 2018.

Helping Others In The New YearBY RABBI PETER S. BERG

LIFE IS MEANT TO BE LIVED. NO EXCUSES. NO RESERVATIONS. NO HOLDING BACK. I recently heard the story about violinist Fritz Kreisler, who once came across a beautiful instrument that

he wanted to acquire. When he finally raised the money for the violin, he returned to buy it and learned that it had already been sold to a prominent collector.

Kreisler went to the new owner’s home in order to try and persuade him to sell the violin. But the collector said it was one of his prized possessions and he could not let it go. The disappointed Kreisler turned to leave, but then asked a favor. “May I play the instrument once before it is consigned to silence?”

Permission was granted and the great musician began to play. The violin sang out a quality of music so beautiful that the collector himself could only listen in wonderment. “I have no right to keep that to myself,” he said after the musician finished. “The violin is yours, Mr. Kreisler. Take it into the world and let people hear it.”

William Arthur Ward once said, “If you believe in prayer, pray; if you believe in serv-ing, serve; if you believe in giving, give.” The message of the New Year is that you and I are exquisite violins – our music is meant to be heard. Happiness is never found in excessive busyness. Rather, it is found in investing our lives in others. This year, say YES when asked for a hand. Volunteer some time for a cause you care about. Spend an hour with a lonely

friend or relative. Happiness is never about ability or inability. Happiness is about availability. Life is

meant to be lived.

Wishing you a shannah tovah u’metukah, from home to home.Rabbi Peter S. Berg
