A Word From The Secretary

Welcome to all Cycling UK members living in Calderdale and adjoining areas of Bradford . . . and anyone thinking of joining us. Firstly, you will notice that I have used the new branding of our national organisation (formerly branded as CTC). I say formerly, but strictly the organisation is still legally known as Cyclists' Touring Club, as this is the name registered at Companies House. As I alluded to in the last edition of this Gazette, the national organisation has gone through a re-brand and is now known as Cycling UK. However, Member Groups have been given the option of retaining CTC in their name, so we are remaining as Calderdale CTC unless and/or until we decide to change our minds. In line with the branding guidelines, our new cycling jerseys will use this existing name, but include the wording 'we are Cycling UK'. I hope that is all clear! The jerseys are available to order on our website www.calderdale ctc.org.uk (under the menu ‘About Calderdale CTC’), together with all the information you need about our rides and other activities.

Most of you reading this will already be members of Cycling UK. However, if you are not currently a member but are thinking of joining, you can come along and join up to 3 rides as a guest. After filling in a simple form you will be covered by our insurance and can get an idea of our style and pace of rides. If you wish to continue riding with our group, you will be asked to join Cycling UK which will give you very valuable third party insurance cover, as well as a number of other benefits, including discounts on YHA membership and overnight stays, and outdoor products. We try not to discourage new riders with lots of bureaucracy but need to follow Cycling UK guidelines in order to minimise risks to our riders and leaders. At the end of the day, it is member subscriptions that pay for the work of Cycling UK and, in turn, contribute to the costs of running our member group, modest as they are.

Turning to the subject of what we are all here for – riding our bikes - we have had a successful season of Summer rides, the largest ones usually being the Calderdale CTC Autumn Tints rides, but with a healthy turnout for all our rides. One of the joint rides with our friends from Huddersfield CTC saw

25 riders setting off from Brighouse to Lotherton Hall – a recent record. We have put together a new programme of Sunday rides for the winter that are generally no more than 40 miles, with a single destination, which we hope to entice you with over the coming months, whatever the weather (almost!). And the Autumn Tints rides continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year.

Our Friday evening winter Clubroom programme starts in

October with the usual range of talks and slide shows, once again put together by our Clubroom Secretary, John Whiteley. Everyone can expect a warm welcome, no matter how cold and miserable the weather might be. Our team of volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible, will provide the usual refreshments, including pie and pea suppers on some evenings.

We continue to campaign for better and safer provision for all cyclists. We are pleased to see that a Cycling Strategy for Calderdale is finally coming together, led by the Council, but with input from independent consultants and a wide range of cycling interests, including our members. This should be completed by Christmas and will sit within a high level Transport Strategy for the district, backed by the Council.

Finally, I must mention our Annual General Meeting, which takes place on Friday 4 November at our Clubroom at 7.45pm. You are encouraged to come along and find out what we have been doing over the past year and our plans for the next year. I intend to stand down as Secretary, having completed a 3-year term in the role. If you are interested in putting your name forward for this, or any other, role and want to have a chat beforehand, don't hesitate to get in touch with me at [email protected] . We need fresh volunteers to ensure a vibrant future for the club and I'd like to encourage you to get involved. Safe cycling over the coming months!

Calderdale CTC SUNDAY RIDES October 2016 - March 2017

Welcome to the Sunday Rides Winter programme.

Start times To make things simple, we’ve opted for a single start time of 9:30am (meet at 9:15am) for all the winter Sunday rides, with a few exceptions such as the Christmas Day and New Year’s Day morning rides, when we will give you an extra 30 minutes lie-in!

Ride Duration and Speed Over the winter months our Sunday Rides will be about 40 miles, with just one single refreshment stop either at the destination or part way round. The few morning rides will be about 20 miles. We tend to average 10-12 mph riding speed, (depending on hills!), the main aim being to chat and enjoy the scenery. We will not leave anyone behind. We aim to get back well before dark, but it is advisable to take lights. NOTE: Ride leaders may change the route on the day, depending on the weather and the people on the ride. If you plan to join us en route, please phone the leader (see the ride leader contact details opposite) to let them know. Standard rides & Audax events offer the chance to ride a set distance inside a generous time limit on a more sporting basis, but not as a race.

Start points As far as possible we will continue with the Summer pattern, i.e. 1. 2nd Sunday of the month: Brighouse - Bethel Street car park, opposite Wetherspoons pub The Richard Oastler ). 2. Last Sunday of the month: Mytholmroyd Community Centre car park. 3. All other Sundays: Halifax - Bull Green Car Park (opposite Wetherspoons pub Barum Top Inn

NEW RIDERS ARE WELCOME on all our rides, and you can take part in the first three rides before we ask you to join the club. You may want to phone the ride leader to get more details of the ride, or you can contact me, Dave Dodwell, at [email protected]

Calderdale CTC AUTUMN TINTS RIDES

Group cycling for cyclists of any ability, age, or gender

Colin Chapman writes: Calderdale CTC Autumn Tints continues to attract riders both locally and from outside of our boundaries keen to enjoy the spectacular and varied terrain of our region and the satisfaction of conquering the challenging climbs of the area.

Our twice-weekly rides are both well supported and enjoyed by all levels of riders, whether physically or electrically powered!

During April, fifteen of our members completed the G.H. Stancer Memorial ride to Pocklington, and in June, we enjoyed a social camping weekend at the recently revived York Cycle Rally.

Thanks to all participants for your continued support and to all ride leaders and group helpers.

Calderdale CTC Autumn Tints draws on the history and tradition of the Autumn Tints Cycling Comrades, which was originally founded to attract cyclists over the age of 50 to ride together. In line with the open ethos of CTC activities, we now invite cyclists of any ability, age, or gender to join us on our organised, led rides, and offer a warm welcome to all, whether an inexperienced rider or someone who would like to try riding within the safety and friendship of a group.

Rides are held every Wednesday & Saturday, at a steady pace &, wherever possible, on quiet & often very scenic routes. Often, after our Morning Coffee stop, the group will divide. The main group completes the full ride, whilst those preferring a gentler ride, do a shorter, leisurely run of about 15-20 miles. Destinations for ALL rides are listed below.

If you'd like to join us, then just turn up at the start, or if you have any queries, please ring me or the ride leader on the numbers listed or email [email protected] Calderdale CTC Autumn Tints XMAS DINNER This has been provisionally booked for Wednesday 7th Dec. at the Windmill Court, Ogden. CALDERDALE CTC Cycling Kit

Dave Dodwell reports We’ve finally decided on a kit, based on a design by Colin Chapman. Colin writes: "Firstly, maintaining the Blue/Yellow theme of the Club colours, I have incorporated them into a modern design suitable for the 21st Century. I have also introduced strategic white panelling to break up & soften the harsh contrasts of the blue/yellow blocks. Whilst the Yellow gives bright visibility during daylight hours, introduction of the White panels enhances low light visibility as an added safety feature! Although a modern design, I have also acknowledged the traditions of the CTC by the introduction of “Winged Wheel” motifs to both shoulders & have also added subtle, tasteful “Yorkshire White Roses” front & rear in recognition of our County roots. The chest banding also allows clear display of the member group branding, which, by spacing at two levels, reduces the script height resulting in a slightly smaller but neater banner." Our kit is being made by Force GB – a local company based in Liversedge. You can find out all about their products at http://forcegb.com The club can put in a bulk order, or people can order individually direct from Force GB. The advantage of a bulk order is that the prices are lower but you will have to wait until we have collected 15 order items, and you have to arrange with us to pick them up. The advantage of individual orders is that you can order direct from Force GB and it is delivered to you by post; but it costs more. In both cases, orders can take 3-6 weeks to be processed. If you want to join a bulk order you need to follow the instructions on our website at http://calderdalectc.org.uk/club-kit-order/ The first bulk order is going in on 30 September 2016, but if there is demand we may put together

more bulk orders. Visit the Calderdale CTC website for latest information. At time of going to press, the cost of bulk order items are as follows: Short Sleeve Club Jersey £42 Long Sleeve Club Jersey £54 Rain Jacket £57.60 Dry Storm Gilet (white mesh back) £45.60 Thermal Dry Storm Gilet £57.60 Bib Shorts with High Density pad £59.40 Arm warmers £19.20 Individual Orders Instead of taking part in a bulk order, individual members will be able to place orders after 30 September 2016 directly at http://www.forcegb.com/clubshops.html The cost for individual orders is approximately 20% more than for the bulk order (see Online Price List), but that does include delivery to your home address. Note: make sure you get the size correct; it cannot be returned if it doesn’t fit. Dave Dodwell has some samples that can be tried on. (Dave is a 38" chest but fits into a 40" Large jersey). Then decide on your size by checking the Sizing Guide on the ForceGB website. Local clubs Condor RC and Halifax Imperial Wheelers have the same supplier. Alternatively if you are passing the Force GB works at Victoria Mills, Liversedge, WF15 6DP I’m sure you could try some on for size.
