Memory CornerThe Stages of Alzheimer’s DiseaseBy Ava M. Stinnett

Perhaps you’ve heard people use the words dementia and Alzheimer’s disease interchangeably. It’simportant to know that they are not the same thing. Dementia is not a specific disease. It is an overallterm for a set of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. The most common causeis Alzheimer’s disease. The other causes of dementia can produce similar, overlapping symptomssuch as confusion, memory loss, and difficulty performing everyday activities. Keep in mind that somememory loss can happen with aging. For example, it’s normal to forget where you parked the carfrom time to time. But forgetting how to drive to a place you’ve been to many times or forgetfulnessthat interferes with your daily life is not.

Seven Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease

Let’s take a look at the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Some healthcare providers use a simplethree-phase model (mild/early, moderate/middle, and severe/late). Others, however, have found aseven-stage system, developed by Dr. Barry Reisberg of New York University, to be more useful inunderstanding the progression of the illness. Although symptoms will vary for each person, learningmore about how Alzheimer’s unfolds over several years will guide you as you plan for a loved one’s

Stage 7: Very severe decline. Stage seven is the final stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Your loved onemay lose the ability to walk, sit, or eat on their own. Vocabulary becomes limited. During this stage, yourrole as a caregiver should focus on preserving quality of life and dignity. Research tells us that somecore of the person’s self may remain. This means that you may be able to continue to connect throughtouch, playing a favorite song, or just sitting together.

Stage 1: Normal or no impairment. During this stage, there may be nooutward behaviors to suggest an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. An imagingtest—a PET scan—that shows how the brain is working may revealwhether the disease is present.Stage 2: Very mild decline. There may be minor memory problems atthis stage, such as misplacing things or being unable to find the rightword in a conversation.Stage 3: Mild decline. Friends and family members may start to noticememory and cognitive problems such as difficulty planning andorganizing, losing personal possessions (including valuables), andtraveling to new locations. At this stage, a physician would likely be ableto detect impaired cognitive functioning.Stage 4: Moderate decline. The symptoms of stage four of Alzheimer’sdisease are apparent. There may be trouble managing finances andpaying bills, remembering details about their life history, and evidenceof poor short-term memory.Stage 5: Moderately severe decline. People in the fifth stage ofAlzheimer’s begin to need help with many day-to-day activities, such asbeing prompted to bathe, choosing appropriate clothing, or recallingtheir own phone number. In some cases, though, they may continue tobathe and toilet independently and still know their family members.Stage 6: Severe decline. Someone in the sixth stage of Alzheimer’sdisease requires constant supervision and/or professional care.Symptoms may include loss of awareness of recent events, dramaticpersonality changes, confusion about their surroundings, inability torecognize faces except closest friends and relatives, loss of bowel andbladder control, and wandering.

SingFit

Join us in welcoming SingFit Therapeutic Music to CarltonSenior Living! In the past six months Carlton piloted thisprogram at our San Leandro and Poet’s Corner locations. The Memory Care residents in these communitiesexperienced therapeutic music sessions that promotedpositive creative expression.

Starting in October this program will be launched at all 7 ofCarlton’s Memory Care Communities. Each Memory Carewill run therapeutic music sessions by a certified facilitatorwho received training from a licensed music therapist.

Research shows that participants who engagedin active singing, like therapeutic SingFitsessions, had an average mood elevation of43%, and a decrease in wandering, agitation, and medication use. Unlike most forms ofprogramming, research also shows that activesinging promotes a full brain workout, neurochemical release, respiratory benefits, immunity fortitude and socialization. Thesepositive results have encouraged Carlton SeniorLiving to partner with SingFit to facilitateactive therapeutic singing sessions for residentsto engage in on a regular basis.

Speak to your Memory Care Director for moreinformation on this incredible addition toCarlton Programming. We look forward tosinging with you and your loved ones!

– Dr. Wayne DyerAs I listen to people, it’s clear that trauma and crisis abound in our collective lives. Some have a strongfaith in God on which to cling while others do not. Even when we do, an inspirational line or tworemembered or written is helpful when we’re struggling to achieve peace of mind. This month I’ve focusedon a few of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s “Inner Peace” cards. Read through some of them, select those that speakto you, examine why it does, and decide how you will apply it to your life.

Happiness, fulfillment, and purpose in life are all inner concepts. If you don’t have INNER PEACEAND SERENITY, then you have nothing.

You can reshape your thinking so that you never have to think in negatives again. You and only youchoose your thoughts.

Don’t equate your self-worth with how well you do things in life. You aren’t what you do. If you are whatyou do, then when you don’t---you aren’t!

No one can depress you. No one can make you anxious. No one can hurt your feelings. No one can makeyou anything other than what you allow inside.

Forgiveness is the most powerful thing you can do for yourself on the spiritual path. If you can’t learnto forgive, you can forget about getting to higher levels of awareness.

Stop focusing on what you do not have, and shift your consciousness to an appreciation for all that youARE and all that you DO have.

If you are suffering in your life right now, I can guarantee that this condition is tied up with some kindof attachment to how things SHOULD be going.

One of the HIGHEST PLACES you can get to is to be INDEPENDENT of the good opinions of otherpeople.

Most people are SEARCHING for happiness OUTSIDE of THEMSELVES. That’s a fundamentalmistake. Happiness is something that you ARE and it comes from THE WAY THAT YOU THINK.

You’re always alone, but you’re only lonely if you don’t like the person you’re alone with. Think positivethoughts and do high-esteem self-talk.
