Our new website is fairlawnlutheran.org. Anyone who goes to the old website (flcs-oh.org) will be forwarded to the new address or to a connector page. Over time we will be making the change on all publications and printed materials.

WHY DO WE GIVE? Why do we give? Is it simply because God commands us to? Or is there more to it? To be sure, the instruction and Word of God in the Bible says we should give, and this is sufficient to encourage us to give. But there’s more to it than just obligation. We’re not just trying to fulfill a work of the Law. We are bearing fruits of the Spirit given to us by our Father in heaven through His Son our Lord Jesus Christ. As sons of God in Christ, we are heirs – heirs who share in the glory of the Son of God. The inheritance is ours because of the Father’s grace and mercy, His generosity in sending His Son in time to save us for all eternity. And this is why we give of our income to the work of the church. We want to emulate His generosity by being generous ourselves. We give to the work of the Church because we have witnessed the generous giving of our Father in heaven. More than that, we are recipients of it. It is because we have received God’s gifts that we desire to give ourselves. And His gifts are not just spiritual. They are temporal and earthly as well. As the Small Catechism teaches in the Fourth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread.” God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving. In other words, God gives us everything we need for the care of both body and soul. His generosity knows no bounds. Therefore, we sit down at the beginning of the year, the beginning of the month, or the beginning of the week to set aside a generous portion of God’s daily bread for His work in the Church. We don’t do this simply because He has commanded us so to do; it is because we, as His children by grace, want to emulate His generosity in our own lives. He is our Father; we are His children. And children want to be like their parents.

A New Year in Children’s Ministry A great new year of learning began in September with some changes and new opportunities in Fairlawn Lutheran’s children’s ministry. We have a new Sunday School Director, Millie Thomas. Millie has been a member of Fairlawn Lutheran for several years along with her husband Kevin, and their three children: Henry, Logan and Violet. Thank you for stepping into this role! Millie says, “Our goal in Sunday School this year to get connected! We want the kids to get to know each other and their teachers, but we are also starting an initiative to make more home connections. We only get to nurture their faith one hour a week, so we are working hard to help equip and support that faith building at home too.” One change this year is that the third and fourth graders are leading the younger children in the Sunday School openings, through prayer, song, and offering. Our 5th-6th grade class is also doing some exciting new things this year. The 5th-6th grade

Sunday School class is now part of what will prepare the young people of our congregation for Confirmation during their 7th-8th grade years. Teachers will help the kids begin to make connections between the Scriptures and the particular confession of faith that our church has. This will help prepare them to learn in-depth during their two years of Confirmation classes. A big thank you to all of the adults who serve as Sunday School teachers!

NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR KIDS TO HELP: We are blessed to be helping Christmas in Action through our Sunday School offering this year. Nathan and Lauren Knowles are relocating to Texas to work for this volunteer organization. Christmas in Action was started in 1972 by Bobby Trimble; it grew out of a project from his men's bible study class. The idea was to be the hands and feet of Christ by repairing homes for elderly and disabled homeowners on limited incomes to allow them to remain safely in their homes. They work on everything from roofs to windows to building wheelchair ramps. In the 1980s it began to spread across the country and now has affiliates throughout the United States. Since its inception, Christmas in Action has worked on over 10,000 homes!

We want to extend a big thank you to Arin Sloan, who has “retired” from her duties as Sunday School Director this year. She has served the Sunday Schoolers and their families for many years and represented Fairlawn Lutheran children in church-wide decision-making. Thank you for sharing your God-given gifts and your time in service to God through His children!

Are you looking for a way to serve at church? There are many opportunities to work with the children’s

ministry: Sunday School, youth groups, Vacation Bible School, confirmation mentor program, family ministries, and much more! Talk to Pastor Adam to find out how you can use your spiritual gifts in service

to others.

We will seek to bless those inside and outside the church with the physical, emotional and spiritual resources God has given Fairlawn Lutheran Church. There are so many ways to serve both at church and in our community, so use your time, treasures and talents to be a blessing to someone else.

Last year, Fairlawn Lutheran donated $350 for gifts for seven children, 212 boxes of Rice-A-Roni, and 48 boxes of school supplies. UPDATE ON THE FEDERWITZ FAMILY: LUTHERAN BIBLE TRANSLATORS (LBT)

We at Fairlawn Lutheran were happy to be able to see the Federwitz family recently and greet them in church - they had driven to Ohio to spend a few days with Ali’s family (Fairlawn Lutheran Church members Ted and Fran Urbach and brother Matt). They asked for continued prayers for their family as they settle back in to their home and life in Ghana. At the Lutheran Bible Translators International Offices in Concordia, MO, the staff prayed over the family in preparation for their departure (see photo). It was a very special time for them and they said, “we are blessed to be cared for by this group of people.” Prayers and blessings to the Federwitz family as they return to Ghana to their

mission to help bring the work of Bible translation for those who do not yet have God’s Word in the language of their hearts. Paul Federwitz serves as a computer consultant to missionaries and organizations in Ghana and Liberia and as an IT Coordinator for Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT) world-wide. Ali is responsible for home education of their children (Hannah, Levi, and Eden) and is also a member care specialist for LBT.

MISSION WORK We heard from missionary Erin Mackenzie about her work during her visit to Fairlawn Lutheran this summer. The following is a note she sent about the offering collected for her: Dear Saints at Fairlawn—

Your gift toward the church’s work in Latin America through me is much appreciated. Like Paul told the saints in Philippi, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.” Each and every one of you is a blessing! It doesn’t seem like all that long ago that I made my whirlwind trip to Fairlawn and then spent the next 2 weeks on the road, but I’ve been here almost 2 months now. I’m still humbled that the Lord has called me to serve Him in this way. As I dive deeper and deeper into my role with each passing day, I can already see glimpses of how He will use my experiences, gifts, and abilities for the good of His Kingdom. The first “team” I’ll work with is the Dominican Republic’s fall FORO group. FOROs are biannual roundtable discussions of all parties that support mission work in a particular country. Ours begins on Friday, and I’m in charge of meals, lodging, and transportation. It’s been a learning experience for sure! Know that I will guard you in my prayers even as you do the same. I look forward to sharing stories and

pictures from the mission field with you on a regular basis through my monthly newsletters, blog, and Facebook page!

Your sister in Christ, Erin Mackenzie

HAVEN OF REST CHRISTMAS GIFT DRIVE FOR CHILDREN STARTS OCTOBER 1 It’s time again for Haven of Rest’s “Kids Helping Kids” project – the goal is to provide Christmas presents for needy & homeless children. The toys are distributed to 335-390 children at Haven of Rest’s Happy Birthday Jesus party in December. In October, we will be collecting unwrapped new toys, games or gift cards for children up to age 18. There is a special need for toys for children newborn – 2-years-old and 9- to 12-year-old children. The toys will be delivered to Haven of Rest in November. Please put unwrapped toys and games in the Human Care box in the Narthex. Gift Cards need to be enclosed in an envelope marked for HBJP or Haven of Rest and put in Gina Hedervary’s mailbox.

We are thankful for the generous support given this project in past years and feel confident that we will have a full box by the end of October. The toys that Haven of Rest distributes may be the only present these children receive. Luke 12:48 says, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Those of us who are blessed with much, let’s consider what we can do to help those who are in need. Human Care contact: Gina Hedervary at ghedervary@[email protected], or 330-242-0993.

OPPORTUNITY FOR MATCHING GIFTS FOR HURRICANE FLORENCE AID THROUGH THRIVENT Thrivent Financial will match personal contributions to up to $1 million to organizations assisting those affected by Hurricane Florence. Contributions can be made on the Thrivent.com disaster response page. Thrivent will match funds until December 31, 2018, or until the match goal is met, whichever is achieved first. Thrivent will also cover any processing fees so that 100% of donations go to the charities.
