OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK TERM 4 UPDATE

As always it feels like term 4 creeps up out of nowhere and suddenly arrives on our doorstep. Time is certainly an

unusual beast. Unlike people it seems to speed up rather than slow down. With term 4 bringing some changes I

would like to take this opportunity to ensure we maintain high expectations as we head toward the years end. SCHOOL UNIFORM

As we head toward summer, term 4 is hats and sandals time. SCHOOL SUN HAT

All students are expected to bring their RI hat to school particularly for morning tea, lunch and PE times. These hats

are available at the uniform shop should you need a new one. Students are expected to have these hats on at all

times when they are outside. Students not wearing a hat will be asked to make their way to the shaded area. SANDALS

During the summer months children are able to wear sandals as a cooler option. On days that they have technology

they will need to either wear or bring their winter leather shoes for safety reasons. The technology rooms present

much greater risks of injury especially with the likes of sharp tools and knives. GENERAL UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS

School uniforms are an important part of our identify as members of the Remuera Intermediate community. All

students are expected to present themselves neatly in full school uniform. For boys this includes ensuring shirts are

tucked in and socks are kept up. If necessary garters may be used to stop these falling down all the time. For girls,

plain white ankle socks are required when wearing shoes. All shoes should be kept clean and preferably polished

with shoe polish as necessary. All students should make their way to and from school in full school uniform unless

they are attending an early morning training in which case they may wear PE gear on their way to school. We have

also noticed a recent increase in the amount of jewellery and even the occasional use of coloured hair dye. We

appreciate your support in ensuring that these matters are dealt with at home. NEW PE UNIFORM

From this week we are transitioning to a new PE top for both boys and girls. This

new top is a more modern climatech fabric without a collar. This should help with

washing and general wear. Sales of the new shirt have begun this term in

preparation for year 7’s staring next year. If you need to replace any PE tops you

will need to buy the new one which has been priced the same as the old one.

Current year 7 students can wear the red top throughout the remainder of this

year and next year as we transition. All students will be expected to be wearing

the new top by 2020. Next year both the old and new tops will be acceptable.

MAINTAINING HIGH STANDARDS

As the end of the year draws closer there can be a temptation to let things slide somewhat. We would like to ask

for your support in ensuring that your children understand the importance of continuing to remain focused right

through to the end of the school year. This includes maintaining their academic standards whilst also continuing to

behave appropriately as we have come to expect throughout the year.

AIMS GAMES 2018

This year, Remuera Intermediate sent one football team, one cheerleading team, and eleven individual athletes to

the AIMS Games in Tauranga last month. All competitors had achieved at a very high level in their sporting codes in

Auckland competitions throughout the year and thus were eligible for entry under our school’s criteria.

As a school we finished 9th on the Medal table out of 103 schools. Here are some of the highlights:

BADMINTON

Ethan Chuang - 1st place Division 1 Year 7 Boys

Owen Wu - 1st place Division 2 Year 8 Boys

Jefferson Wu - Played Personal Best Year 8 Boys

Ethan Chuang and Owen Wu - 1st place Boys Doubles

Remuera Intermediate School - 1st team placing.

CROSS COUNTRY

Coen Anderson – 4th place Year 7 Boys

The Cross Country had 183 competitors including all the top runners from Auckland Interzones.

Nicola Hume – Achieved Personal Best

Nicola ran the 3km Cross Country race against 164 Year 7 Girls and placed 89th. It was the hardest race she had

ever done, very fast and with 2 hurdles and an incredibly steep ascent.

She was excited to run against the best runners in the region and finishing below the median time was a great

achievement!

MULTISPORT

Coen Anderson - 1st place

Multisport had 82 Year 7 competitors from all over New Zealand. It consisted of a 2.4km Run, a 3.8km Mountain

Bike and a 1km Canoe. Coen was determined to get on the podium but he was a bit concerned as alot of the

competitors had very flash bikes and he had never done a mountain bike race. He gave his all to the run, coming in

1st and managed to maintain that lead throughout the race. He was incredibly surprised to win!

It took Coen 30 minutes and 10 seconds to complete the course and win Gold.

SWIMMING

Oliver Sargison - Silver in the 100 IM, 100 Fly, 200 IM and 200 Free and Bronze in the 100 Free.

3rd place overall on points.

Edward Joh - Progressed to the 13 year old boys' finals in all his events narrowly missing bronze in the 50 Freestyle.

Hannah Henson - Fought hard in her heats in the extremely competitive field of 12 year old girls, but unfortunately

just missed the finals

GOLF

Daniel Freeman – 1st place. Gross result 304 shots

Robbie Turnbull – 3rd place. Gross result 305 shots

The golfers get to play on 4 great courses over 4 days. After 4 days of intense golf there was only 1 shot separating

the top 3 players. The last round was nail biting going down to the last putt of the last hole on the last day!

Golf has many methods to find a winner when it’s tied. In this case it was done on a hole countback.

INDIVIDUAL AEROBICS

Hayley Christini – 6th place

2018 is the first year AIMS has run individual Aerobics as a sport. It has always been just the Aerobics Performance

Groups. They were hoping for at least 20 entries and they got 71 so it was a great start!

Hayley was up against girls who had competed in the Worlds in Phoenix earlier this year so she is so happy with her

placing!

FOOTBALL

Our football boys finished 7th out of 64 teams.

Multiple times over the week the teachers were told how impressed other parents were with how our boys played

the game and by the sportmanship that was shown.

CHEERLEADING

The Cheer Team performed the best routine they've done this year scoring a huge 95.2 and winning the Silver

medal behind Orewa College who scored 95.4. The rest of the 12 teams they were up against scored significantly

lower with quite a jump down to 3rd place and lower.

We are delighted as they had been working so hard and on the day everything just clicked!

GIRLS BREAKFAST

On Tuesday 18th September both Year 7 and Year 8 Girls enjoyed breakfast at the school with their female

caregivers!

They were joined by special guest speaker Angela Barnett, Pretty Smart - Breaking Beauty Stereotypes for Teens.

SCIENCE EXTENSION TRIPS

Last term the science extension group undertook 2 fieldtrips.

The first was to the Photon Factory @ Auckland University. The Photon Factory is a laser research and product

development laboratory within the Physics Department. Students received a tour of the facility and question and

answer session with researchers.

More recently, the science extension group were also lucky enough to visit Thermo Fisher Scientific in Penrose.

Here they were again treated to a site tour, this time including a gowning up experience for working in a biological

clean-room. They were also presented with temperature data loggers to take home to monitor temperature over a

number of months.

Remuera Intermediate would like to express their thanks to both the Photon Factory and Thermo Fisher for

accommodating and inspiring these budding young scientists.

TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE

On Thursday 13th September the Technology Showcase took place in our school hall.

Students and their parents were able to see some of the work our students have been involved in so far this year. It

was a great opportunity for our Year 7 students to see what the Year 8’s get up to and hopefully it gave them more

information on which to base their option choices for next year. It was also the perfect chance for our students to

showcase all the hard work they have put into their technology classes this year!

At RI we pride ourselves on challenging students and our technology classes provide a medium to challenge them in

ways unlike any other subject. Technology is a very ‘hands on’ subject and provides opportunities for all students to

achieve success. It also allows some ‘life skills’ to be incorporated into our programmes.

The point of difference an Intermediate School has, is its’ specialist classes. At RI we have a very strong team of

teachers who constantly strive to ensure the programmes they present to our students are the best on offer.

Our Tech team encourage the students to be critical thinkers and innovative in what they are designing.

Displays from Bio Tech, Soft Materials, Food Tech and Hard Materials were amazing. Students in each of these

areas were able to show and tell visitors about the work they have been doing and products created.

Our guest speaker was Laura Smith - Spatial Designer. She trained in Fine Arts, film and prop design and runs a

successful business in spatial design. Laura totally captivated the audience with her presentation of the design

journey of one of her projects involving a local cafe.

WILLIAM PIKE – WAIPU CAVES

The William Pike challenge award saw the students head up to Waipu Caves for their next outdoor challenge. This

adventure was exploring the Waipu caves and also Rock climbing and abseiling. The caves are a very exciting and

challenging cave system, which is full of tight squeezes, rivers, incredibly dark spaces and of course glow worms!

This is one of the most challenging and confronting trips for the students, as being in the depths of the caves is a

very new and difficult environment. The students had to push themselves in situations that they weren’t

comfortable in, like crawling along on their belly through very small spaces. The second part of the trip involved the

students learning about the correct way to rock climb in an outdoor setting and to overcome heights to abseil

down large rock walls. An incredible trip with a lot of learning and challenges on offer.

THE PASSION PROJECT

These are a few of the 50 students working on 'The Passion Project', an idea created by Kate Shellekens, an ex pupil

and now head girl of Selwyn College. She wanted to bring together students thoughts about what they were

passionate about, painted on a tile. There are several secondary and intermediate schools involved so a huge

undertaking for Kate who will be grouting hundreds of the tiles onto panels to present in an exhibition.

RI CYCLING CLUB UPDATE

The recent school holidays saw a number of our riders compete at National and Regional levels.

For the first time in the history of Schools Cycling the National School Road Championships were held in

Christchurch during the first weekend of the school holidays. The event comprised 3 races; a road race, criterium

and team time trial. All six riders - Jonny Barclay, Finn Houghton, Richie Wood, Tegan Feringa, Charlotte Wood and

Alex Clark, put forward their best efforts.

RI Team Time Trial Teams results: Girls Team - 6th – TTT

Boys Team 10th – TTT

Excellent performances and lots of fun on a beautiful day!

The Yunca Junior Tour of Southland, regarded as one of Australasia's leading Junior Road Tours, was held on the 6-8

October. Jonny Barclay and Alex Clark competed in this event with very commendable results:

KEEPING SAFE IN THE DIGITAL WORLD

Last term we were lucky to have Detective Kate Smith return to our school to talk to our Year 7s about Keeping Safe

in the Digital World. Kate's talk leaves our students with a range of strong messages, including:

Everything you post becomes public information.

Unless they are your friends and you have met them you DON'T know who you are talking to on the internet.

If you see something that you are not comfortable with, tell an adult.

Keep your details private, things like your address, birthdate and phone numbers.

Always ask for help.

If you have any questions surrounding cyber safety take a look at this website or contact us:

BRIDGE CLUB

On the final day of last term, members of the school Bridge Club travelled to Hamilton with Mrs Clydesdale and Mr

Rasmussen to take part in a national competition playing against other intermediate pupils, high school pupils and

university students. It was a great day with some very intense moments. Justin Chao of Room 1 received a major

prize, his team won the day’s event on handicap.

SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

At the end of last term, members of the strings section of the school orchestra attended a rehearsal of the

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at the Auckland town hall. It was great to see a professional orchestra being put

through their paces before a big concert. The guest violinist was fantastic and the concert received rave reviews at

the sell-out performance that night.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

On Thursday 20th September, the RI girls volleyball team made their way to the Central Zone Volleyball

Competition at the North Shore Events Centre. We had spent most of term 3 practising both during lunch and after

school so the girls felt ready and were excited to put all our hard work onto the courts. We arrived on the day to

find a strong group of 12 teams ready to battle it out. The game plan was simple. Remember the basics, play hard

and have as much fun as possible. Out of the 10 girls that went on the day all of them played in every game.

Volleyball allows you to substitute as many times as you want and we took full advantage of this.

With the rotation of all 10 girls, we were able to keep our energy high and our focus on the game all day. This lead

to the girls doing spectacularly in pool play, we ended up winning 4 games and losing 1. Every single game was

close with the girls stepping up and working as a team, constantly talking and encouraging each other. With a

strong performance in pool play we made it to the semis. We unfortunately lost and were then playing for 3rd. We

came up against Ponsonby Intermediate, a team that had been playing well all day and were not going to be an

easy game. The girls played amazingly and came out victorious with an impressive outcome of third place.

Team members were: Alyssa Kemp, Caitlyn Taumata, Fesui Tagaloa, Eva Lavrent, Faith Evalu, Emily Cosham,

Holly Lightbourne, Felicity Thompson, Jessie Barclay, Te Kahurangi Whata.
