A Message from your Exalter Ruler… Greetings to all Members of the Westbrook Lodge #1784 WOW! Where did the summer go? Grand Exalted Ruler Robert Duitsman and his wife Beth visited our lodge on September 22nd; it was an honor to meet them. We had a wonderful evening with a delicious dinner. Thanks to all the volunteers and our kitchen staff for making this special event possible.

Our Beach Jam for Breast Cancer is one of our biggest fund raising events we have each year. This year we raised $50,000, our second highest total so far. We will be presenting the checks to Smilow and Middlesex Cancer Centers

during the Tuesday, October 15th Pasta Dinner at 7:00 pm. Beach Jam volunteers wishing to attend should contact the Lodge Office to make a reservation ASAP! The cost of the dinner is $6.00.

The Annual Lodge Raffle drawing was held on Labor Day with a lot of support selling and purchasing the tickets. Thank you to Joe Carpio, chair for this event, and his team for a successful outcome.

Our landscaping committee made the Lodge’s Elk come to life with a natural look. It is a very nice addition to our family. The Pavilion Dedication to our “Absent Members” and our 70th year Anniversary celebration were a great success. It was enjoyable to see some of our Past Exalted Rulers in attendance and have them share some of their experiences with me. Upcoming October Events (Please check inside for specific times):

Oct 9th Trivia Night to be held in our Member’s lounge

Oct 24th Italian of the Year Dinner

Oct 26th Children’s Halloween party

Oct 26th Adult Halloween party

Oct 27th Shoreline Cigar Social (New Event!) As always, please consider joining one of our volunteer teams! Volunteers are always needed and welcome, so please don’t hesitate to get involved. Our organization runs on volunteers and it’s greatly appreciated.

October is Elks National Foundation month! During

you for your support! Linda Nolf, ENF Committee

Veterans Corner

Thanks to you all for your support! Because of you, Westbrook Elks 1784, and our many corporate and individual sponsors, the 4th Annual Skydive for Veterans was our most successful to date! We more than doubled our proceeds from previous years! Approximately $20,000.00 will be split between House of Heroes CT and Work Vessels for Veterans! The Veterans Committee is currently gearing up for the November 16th

Veterans Appreciation Luncheon and Flag Retirement ceremony. We are looking forward to another great event. This will be my last event as your Veterans Committee chairman due a full schedule with other Veteran’s outreach programs. It has been an honor and privilege to serve the Lodge, our Veterans, service members, first responders and their families in this capacity. Any leader is only as good as the team that supports them. I have been blessed to have had Phil Sengle as my guide, mentor, comm. officer and detail man, as well as PW Louthain our guiding elder and John Soehnlein, the man that started it all! I would also like to thank Charlie Corso for always being there with our service flags and taking charge of presenting the colors, Mike Richards for honoring our events with the POW / MIA table setting and to all the committee members and volunteers for their tireless efforts which made our events so successful! Finally, a special thanks to the Board of Directors, Governing Body, Chef Paul and the kitchen staff and volunteers and our members for always saying yes to, and supporting anything that serves those who serve and those served. You all make me proud to be an Elk! I will announce my successor in the November Antlergram. Please start making your reservations for the November event by contacting Phil Sengle at [email protected] or by calling me at 203-417-8031 God bless and thank you all for your support.

With gratitude always, Bruce Fagan

Celebrate ENF Month! What do you think of when you think of October? We

think of falling leaves, howling ghosts, and ENF Month! This month, we’re celebrating the Foundation’s programs, program recipients, volunteers and you! There wouldn’t be an ENF Month without your support. You made dreams come true for more than 3,100 college students. You help thousands of veterans exit or avoid homelessness. You build stronger Elks communities across the nation. This month is as much about the ENF and its programs as it is about you! Help us grow bigger and better by joining our monthly donation program, the Fidelity Club. We’ll keep doing our part in sending students to college, housing veterans experiencing homelessness, and building stronger Elks communities, but we can’t do it without you.

Thanks,

Linda Nolf

ENF Corner

At this time the ENF BOOK FOR A BUCK corner is at capacity. PLEASE REFRAIN from br inging new book donations to the Lodge until the inventory goes down. We will post in the Antler-gram when new donations can be accepted. The ENF Book For A Buck Corner is located upstairs, near the Lodge Office. Thank you!

Gratitude: The Syl Dente/Dick Carroll Golf Committee thanks everyone who participated in and helped with our annual tournament. The West Haven Fisher House truly appreciates our support. The new house built in West Haven is beautiful and in full use for the Veterans and their families. Many thanks to the volunteers who made the Tournament the great success it was. You did a great job! Thanks to Chef Paul and his staff for the fabulous dinner, awesome job to all. The participants are still talking about how great the din-ner was and how incredibly well it was served. Thanks to the Lodge for sponsoring the event and the Lodge Mem-bers and guests who played. We hope you had a good time and en-joyed the event. We look forward to seeing all of you next year on August 17, 2020.

Gratitude: The Sunday Summer Gatekeepers, Barbra and Mike White, would like to thank all of our special Members who volunteered this Summer. We are often the first to greet our fellow Members and welcomed guests, and you all did the same with warmth and humor. Your kindness and dedication is greatly appreciated. See you next Summer!

Scholarship News: The Westbrook Elks Scholarship for 2019 was recently awarded to the following individuals: Michaela Flaherty (Haddam-Killingworth High School) and Colin Hallahan (Lyme - Old Lyme High School). Michaela is now attending UCONN and Colin is enrolled at Purdue University. Each student received $1,500. Congratulations to both and good luck in their future endeavors! Presently, The Elks National Foundation (ENF) has kicked off the 2020 scholarship year. Here are the details: Most Valuable Student (MVS) Contest: The 2020 MVS application is now open.
