LOOKING AHEAD to the United Methodist Church’s General Conference (May 5-15, Minneapolis, Minnesota)The deadline for submitting legislation for General Conference was September 18. We currently have information on some of the proposed plans the General Conference will receive seeking a way for the denomina-tion to bring to a conclusion the on-going debate around the questions of the ordination of gay and lesbian persons as clergy and the ability for gay and lesbian persons to be married within a local church.

Join us for one of two opportunities to learn more on Sun-day, November 3 at 12:15pm in the Children’s Church or Wednesday, November 6 at 6:30pm in the Deep End. If you have questions please see Pastor Doug, Wes Johnson, Gary Wilson or Clyde Kunkel.

NARCAN KITS On August 29, Team Recovery/FAAD held a Narcan training session, presented by the Lucas County Health Department in the gym and we were generously gifted FIVE Narcan kits! Two are in the lobby First Aid cabinet, the other three are in the other First Aid kits located around the building. The Narcan kits that have been provided are easy to use. Inside the black zippered pouch you will find a pair of nitrile gloves, a CPR mouth shield, and two doses of Narcan. Wear-ing the gloves is recommended to avoid potentially coming into contact with powerful drugs.

If you have used Afrin nasal spray, these Narcan doses are administered the same way. Tip the victim’s head back and administer the Narcan into either nostril. Do NOT prime the nasal syringe or the dosage will be wasted. There is one measured dose per container, with a shelf life of 2 years. Call 9-1-1 before administering the first dose. Additional in-structions for administering the Narcan are on the boxes in the kits. If you suspect an overdose but it is not, administer-ing the Narcan will not exacerbate other medical conditions. If you have questions, contact Pastor Beth [email protected].

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDIES:• 9:45am | Adult Bible Study | Rm 214

October 6-Nov. 10 Irresistible....Reclaiming the NEW that Jesus Unleashed for the World. Each week we will have a DVD lesson with discussion. There is no need to purchase a book. Pastor Stanley invites us to embrace the version of faith that against all odds initiated a chain of events resulting in the most significant transformation the world has ever seen......one we must embrace to be the salt and light in our world today.

• 9:45am | Coffee&Conversation | Rm 213 This class discusses modern day issues and current events, and examines the teachings of Jesus in light of them; meets year-round.

• 9:45am|ConnectionPoint| Rm 205 Post high school through mid-twenties: provide a faith based place to connect with peers and discuss issues relevant to this stage of life.

• 9:45am | Donuts & The Bible | Rm 216/Deep End All Jr. and Sr. High School students are welcome. Come enjoy some do-nuts and time with others as we look deeper into what it means to follow Jesus.

• 11am | Sermon Notes | Rm 214 This group will be participating in the all-church study, I Love My Church through October 13. Join us! Then, discussion around individuals’ un-derstanding of the scriptures’ relevance to their journey.

WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDY• 9:30-11:30 | Tuesday AM Bible Study | Rm 214

Through Oct. 27: Come together as we jump into Andy Stanley's study, "Christian: It's not What You Think." Explore the characteristics Jesus used to define those who follow him and what that implies for us today. 'Chris-tian' was a label used by outsiders. Jesus used ’disciple.’ Disciples would be known for their love – a novel concept then and now. What if believers today embodied these traits? No book required & no worries if you can't make all the sessions!

• 7-8:15pm | Study of the Psalms | Rm 213 October 8-November 5: The Psalms are at once God’s Word to humanity and humanity’s word to God. In them, we find glorious praise, deep rage, utter desperation, and quiet reflection. In what seems every situation in life, the psalmists pour out their souls to Almighty God. Come to one session, or come to all. Bring a Bible and a friend. Led by Pastor Jennifer. No cost. Please email Shautau at [email protected] to register.

• 6:30-8pm | Men’s Bible Study | Rm 213 Through October 23: Days In the Word guides participants through what it means to not just be “hearers” of the Word, but also “doers” of the Word! Reignite and strengthen your passion for God’s Word. This study will inspire every participant to Love the Word, Learn the Word, and Live the Word. Email [email protected] to register, cost is $10.

EPWORTH-HAWKINSSTEMMACADEMY PARTNERSHIP

The Epworth Hawkins Partnership joined other community partners

and TPS Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant at an Open House to kick off the 2019-20 school year at Hawkins STEMM Academy on August 15. Vis-itors had an opportunity to tour the new Catalyst Lab, meet with teach-

ers, and learn about programs offered at the school. School started Aug. 16 for grades 1-8 and Aug.22 for kindergarten.

This year Epworth volunteers will assist Principal Beth Stre-tavski at a new Kindergarten Reading night where families of kindergarten students are invited to a meal and presen-tation about ways of helping engage students in reading.

Each family attending the program will receive a new book purchased by the Epworth partnership.

We are also excited to expand two Book Initiative pro-grams this year. Reader Bags, in which students can borrow two books each week, will be offered to 2nd

graders as well as 1st graders. Book discussion groups will be open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students (selected by their teachers) this year. New “library centers” will open soon (replacing the library space that became a Catalyst

Lab). Tutoring and other activities will continue, so more volunteers will be needed.

WHAT EPWORTH KIDS ARE EXPLORING IN OCTOBER!

Elementary at 9:30: Epworth’s Elemen-tary Kids will focus on the life app Trust: Putting your confi-dence in someone you can depend on. Just like a trek through the wilder-ness, life takes trust!

So don’t hit the trail alone. Put your confidence in someone you can depend on. Throughout history God has proven His faithfulness to us, especially in keeping His promise to send Jesus to save us. God will continue to be dependable. The Bible is filled with examples of people who knew first-hand what it means to trust God.

This month, we focus on two of them: Jacob and Joseph. Through their stories, we’ll discover how we can trust Him no matter what we face. Kids will work to memorize this month’s memory verse found in Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own under-standing.”

11:00 WOW: Epworth Elementary Kids will embark on a 4 week study titled “Party On! Friendship with God is a blast!” This hands-on, multi-media series will explore how our faith influences the choices we make. They will learn that a relationship with Jesus isn’t just a “Sunday at church” re-lationship, but one they can rely on to help them make wise decisions everywhere they go!

Preschool & Toddler: Epworth’s Preschool and Toddler kids will learn that God can help them be brave! This month we will use a fun superhe-roes theme to look at what the Bible says

about being brave – and where our source of courage can be found. This hands-on, action packed large group/small group time will also help your early childhood children to memorize this month’s Bible Memory Verse: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid for the Lord your God goes with you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

3RD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATIONThe children will be presented with their Bibles on Sunday, October 20, at the 9:45am service. The Bible the children will receive is The Hands On Bible, which is a new living trans-lation, especially designed for students and contains maps, charts, study aids, and is in an easy-to-read format. Children and parents will then go to a hands-on workshop, 3rd Grade Faith Passage, following the presentation we will learn how to use the Bible. By working together, we can build a strong foundation for our children. Have questions? Please email Mary at [email protected].

KID-TO-KID:LEARNTOSERVEWe are taking donations of gen-tly used or new toys for Hawkins STEMM Academy. Epworth volun-teers help staff the Hawkins Hut, which provides awards for the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports program. School children earn “Hawkeyes” for good behavior.

Periodically these children can exchange “Hawkeyes” for toys at the Hut. Hawkins Hut needs are mini action figures, McDonald's like toys, Play Doh, stuffed animals, Barbie/baby dolls, play jewelry, stress balls, children's wallet/purs-es, uno cards, markers, crayons, colored pencils, and similar items. Donations will be collected outside the Children’s Church during the months of September and October.

SERVEEPWORTH ARTIST SERIESThe Artist Series is an important part of the programming ministry at Epworth. By presenting local and regional talent, we provide events filled with music for our members as well as our community. Epworth’s Artist Series is proud to present the following concerts for the 2019–2020 season:

Christmas music for Brass Quintet And Choir Featuring Join us for the Academy Brass Quintet and our Chancel Choir on Wednesday, December 4 at 7pm. This concert features the Chancel Choir, and The Acad-emy Brass Quintet. We’ll sing favorite Christmas carols for choir and congre-gation and feature favorite Christmas carols as arranged for brass Quintet and choir.

The SonoNovo Chamber EnsembleOn Sunday, January 12 at 3pm the SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble will be performing. The SonoNovo Chamber Ensemble is Toledo’s equivalent to Lon-don’s St. Martin’s in the Field Orchestra. It is a cadre of 15-plus musicians from across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan who come together for one simple purpose: the love of making music. SonoNovo is Latin for “new sound.”

Cecil Baughman on our 1962 Schantz Pipe OrganCome and hear our very own Cecil Baughman on Sunday, April 26 at 3pm. Whether you think the organ is the king of instruments as Mozart allegedly said or the monster that never breathes as Stravinsky is often quoted as saying the organ still holds a lot of fascination for people. In this recital I’ll play music from the 1700’s through the 21st century from England, France and Germany.

We have a wonderful and eclectic Artist Series planned this year. Your contri-butions have kept this vital ministry alive and have kept this from becoming a burden on our operating budget and allow us to reach out into the community and bring new people into Epworth. I ask you to prayerfully consider giving again this year as we continue to bring quality musical programs to our church and community. Below is a pledge card. Please fill it out and return it to the church office. Again thank you for your support!

Yours in Christ, Cecil Baughman

I LOVE MY CHURCH:ALL-CHURCHFOCUS

“I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love each other. This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other.”

These words spoken by Jesus (John 13:34-35) were offered as He and His disciples gathered to share the Passover meal just hours before his arrest and passion. His dy-ing wish for his Church was that his follow-ers would deeply love one another with not only words but with their commitments. Jesus was saying that love was the identify-ing marker of being part of his Body called the Church. Love, deep love is absolutely necessary if we are going to offer an effec-tive witness to the world around us. Our deep love for each other is a living example of how Jesus loves all people.

Join us for this important series as we invite all Epworth members and friends to become more fully engaged in the life of our local church and in our mission to Toledo and the world.

Week 5 | October 6LOVE IN SHARING Invite a friend to church Sunday. Find invitations to give to friends and family on the Stewardship table in the lobby.

Week 6 | October 13LOVE BY COMMITTINGCommitment Sunday when we will offer fresh commitments around financial stew-ardship and expand our love for one another by committing to serve the community God gives us.

OCTOBER S419: IT’S YOUR SERVE!And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, Hebrews 10:24. Are you willing to accept the October S4:19 chal-lenge? Here’s how it works. Gather your friends, small group, Sunday school class – any group you want – and

go out into the community to serve in any way you want. Just follow these steps:1. Assemble a group of volunteers and decide upon the kind

of good deed you would like to pursue. (Hint, you could clean a yard, paint a room, visit a senior living center, serve a meal, etc.)

2. Find the need in the community. This would be a great time to lend a hand to an Epworth homebound individ-ual or re-kindle a relationship with some of the agencies we have served through S4:19 in the past. Questions? Call Doug or Ronnie Gorsuch at (personal information has been removed) if you need advice on planning your project.

3. Contact the person or agency and arrange the date, time and details of the project. Be sure the details are clearly understood between all parties, such as who is provid-ing materials, supplies, tools etc. If space at Epworth is needed, be sure to clear it with the church office to reserve your space.

4. Communicate the details to your group so you can all show up as arranged. Take a group picture during the event if possible. Print it out (professional printing not required) or text it to (personal information has been removed) If you wish, post on social media using #Serv-ingThe419.

5. After completion of your project/good deed visit the S4:19 table in the lobby on any Sunday in October to register your good deed, post your picture and put a ping pong ball in the jar for every volunteer who participated. Let’s see if we can fill the bottle! The ball is in your court! How will you serve?

JOURNEYING THROUGH GRIEF BOOKS Journeying through Grief is a set of four short books sent to people grieving the loss of a loved one at four crucial times during the first year after the loss. Epworth sends these books to members who have lost close family members. Each book is sent individually with a handwritten note. Help is needed to write those notes!

Note writing takes place on the first Tuesday of each month in the volunteer office, next being Tuesday, October 8 & November 5 at 10am. Everything you need will be there, so just show up and be ready to put your pen to paper. For the month of August there are eight letters to write. It could be fun and a way to meet someone new, as we serve our Lord together. Please contact [email protected].

EXTRA GREETING CARDS NEEDEDIf you have extra greeting cards at home that you are not us-ing, please consider donating them to the card ministry for our homebound members. Susan Sanzenbacher Smith sends greeting cards to homebound members of the congrega-tion several times a year and donations of cards are always helpful! There is a particular need for blank cards, “thinking of you” cards, and birthday cards. Card donations can be dropped off in the church office, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm or on Sundays after worship.

CAN YOU HELP DRIVE?Are you available during the day to occasionally assist other Epworth members with a ride to a doctor appointment? It’s a simple way to show care within the congregation. If you can help, contact Pastor Beth at [email protected].

HELP IN THE KITCHENThe Kitchen committee is requesting the help of men, who are available during the day, at their monthly afternoon cleaning in the kitchen. If you are interested, please contact Barbara Davey, (personal information has been removed).

STEPHEN MINISTRY Christ Caring for People

through PeopleThat’s the motto of Stephen

Ministry. The Stephen Minister’s role is to bring God’s love into

the lives of people who are going through a difficult time or experi-encing a crisis. Stephen Ministers

listen, care, support, encourage, and pray with and for a person who is hurting. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God’s

healing love comes pouring through.

If someone you know is facing a crisis—large or small—and could benefit from the caring presence of a Stephen Minister, talk to a Stephen Minister or Stephen Leader [they wear blue name tags] or

contact us at [email protected]. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!
