  • A Message from Pastor Hinrichs

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pio-neer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:1-2 My brothers and sisters in Christ,

As many of you know, I am what you might call a “technology enthusiast.” I like to exam-ine those new electronics, follow the forums about upcoming innovations, and keep track of the latest gadgets that supposedly make our lives easier. But as much as I love technol-ogy, I encountered an interesting article the other day discussing the impacts that this technology has had upon our society. The article cited a study about the average Ameri-can’s attention span which indicated that this average had dropped significantly over the last 20 years. That itself wasn’t all that surprising to me especially considering all the screen time that people have these days, but I was not prepared for just how low that fig-ure would be. According to this study, the average American’s attention span is 8 seconds. That means our attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish! That is down-right scary!

But when you think about it, we are very distractible people, aren’t we? It doesn’t take much for us lose our focus, chasing after one fad after another. Now as challenging as these distractions can be for our everyday life, they are just as bad for our spiritual lives too. It is so easy for us to take a good and God- pleasing thing and twist it around. We can be like Martha and be “distracted by much serving” so that we neglect the one thing needful. We can also be so focused on “growing our faith” that we forget that faith and works go together. Even as a congregation we can get distracted. Long-term planning can keep us from short-term projects. Programs can overshadow people. The list could go on. It can be so easy for us to lose sight of God’s goal for us and for the world!

This is why the author of Hebrews writes, “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Now while the call to “fix our eyes on Jesus” is an important reminder to draw us back from the distractions, there is something far more encouraging going on in this text. In this passage, God calls us not just to fix our eyes on Jesus, but reminds us that HE is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. He is the one who did the very thing we could never do: keeping a constant focus on the perfect plan of His Father. Although we don’t often consider it, this laser-like focus and dedication of Jesus is a great source of comfort for distracted people like us. It means that even when Satan would place temptations in His way, Jesus would not be drawn off course. Even when people were so caught up in His miraculous power that they wanted to make Him king, He didn’t let that go to His head. In fact, in Luke 9:51, we are told that Je-sus’ face was “set steadfastly toward Jerusalem,” knowing full well the events that would unfold there. There was nothing that would steer Him away from His goal of bringing you His salvation. This focus was the Cross and by that Cross His focus was on you and is still on you for all eternity! As you head into this month and all of the potential distractions that come with it, may that focused love of Jesus keep your eyes fixed on Him and all He has planned for you! In Jesus,

    Pastor Brett Hinrichs

  • Opening Thoughts:

At the end of college, I got my first “real” job. I worked hard for my boss and he paid me for my work. So, it goes. Do the work and get paid. Don’t do the work, or do it poorly, and you’ll be looking for a new job and the boss for a new worker.

In our daily lives we “work” before God. Yet, due to our sinfulness, all of that work is not pleasing to Him. Instead it is bad work – unholy work. Thus, we are condemned and face God’s wrath and judgment. For the wages of sin is death.

The fix for this is not for us to do the right work. Instead God is generous and gracious and gives us a gift. His Son, Jesus Christ did the right work: He lived perfectly. He took all our “bad work” and faced God’s wrath and judgment for it in our place. There’s no work required of us for salvation: The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Enjoy your free gift! No work required.

  • Central Illinois District- Mission Story: Casey

When Casey is in Macomb, he participates in worship, Bible study, and social activities at Immanuel Lutheran Stu-dent Center. It has not always been so, though.

Casey attends Western Illinois University. When he first came as a freshman, he was not a Christian.

    What happened?

Just a couple weeks into his first semester, Casey met Courtney in the dining hall. He heard her say, "I'm going to church tomorrow morning." Casey asked if he could go along.

Not only did he go, he stayed.

With Courtney's example and encouragement, he went to a Bible Study. Then he studied Luther's Small Catechism with campus pastor Mike Burdick.

The Holy Spirit worked through the Word. Six months later, Casey was baptized into Christ, surrounded by his new friends. His baptismal sponsor, Courtney, stood right there, promising to walk together with him.

Campus ministries help Lutheran college students remain in their baptismal faith. They encourage and equip these young people to invite non-believers to know the truth and grace of the Triune God. Casey is one of them.

The Lord used your congregation’s gifts to the Central Illinois District to put Immanuel Lutheran Student Center in place and maintain its ministry, for folks like Casey . . . and Courtney . . . and so many others. Thank you!

“I thank my God . . . because of your partnership in the gospel.” -Philippians 1:3-5
