School meals - information for parents Juniper Ventures are the catering suppliers for Maryland School. They create the weekly school menus which are always uploaded to Maryland’s website so parents can view the choices available. Maryland pupils have a range of dietary requirements that Juniper attempt to cater for across the week. For example: vegetable samosa with dhal (vegan option), roast beef and yorkshire pudding (halal) and some items that are not necessarily published on the menus such as ham sandwiches (non-halal). There is a choice of 4 mains each day including a daily fish dish and sandwiches. If your child has a particular dietary requirement please do not hesitate to contact the school– your questions will be passed on to Juniper which helps to inform any future menu changes that may be made.
Meet The Teacher Evening—How to make your child a Maths Genius! Thank you to the 200 (approximately) parents that attended the meeting on Thursday 19th September to meet their child’s new teacher and finding out about the curriculum and the expectations for the year ahead. Members of the school leadership team gave a presentation on how Maryland tries to instil the love of maths in our pupils. Parents were given copies of our calculation policy, which you can also find on our website.
FairPlay House - what a unique experience! Our Year 6 pupils had a fabulous time at their residential trip to Fairplay House in Essex . The children took part in a range of exciting land and water based activities that not only helped to develop skills such as teamwork, but also gave them unique challenges to overcome. Our Deputy Head Girl who attended said “It was an amazing experience, one I will never forget, it really helped us to become more independent!”

Message from Mrs Jackson
Headteacher
Dear Parents and Carers, I hope you have had a great start to the year. Here are some updates:
Staffing: - We say goodbye to Mrs. Islam, our
cover teacher, who is taking a year’s
career break from October half term.
- Congratulations to Mrs. Gajowska,
technical and admin manager in the
office, who will be going on maternity
leave in January. The advert to fill her
vacancy and Mrs. Islam’s position are
advertised on the school website.
Premises: Once again I have to write about
fundraising! We are fundraising to
create a new media room to support
our digital learning curriculum. We
have the lights, camera and sound
equipment, including the ‘green
screen’ for projecting film backdrops,
but now need to fund the renovation
of the old ICT suite to create a media
room. We will be holding various
fund raising events e.g. family disco
with the popular DJ, Mr. Bee, on 6th
December so save the date!
The Trampoline: Please note the trampoline is out of bounds before and after school. This is for health and safety reasons. Quiet Area: (outside the middle hall doors) We are still trying to find a contractor who can renovate the area at a reasonable price. If you know someone who could help us with this project (eg. a landscaper) please contact Mr Lock by phoning the school office. Are you making use of the information screens in both playgrounds? Pease check daily for up-to-date information.
Mrs. L. Jackson, Headteacher

Local and National News
Maryland becomes a School for Success
Maryland has been selected by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan as a School for Success, because of the fantastic progress pupils make. Maryland is in the top 6% of schools in London for progress! Mrs Jackson and Mrs Morbin attended a prestigious awards ceremony at City Hall on Friday 27th September to collect our certificate. We will be providing advice and support to other schools on how to be successful too.
We were given the Schools for Success award based on our 2018 results. Once again our 2019 results are excellent and we are performing above the national average for progress at KS2 in reading, writing and maths.
We are also above the national average for attainment with 73% of pupils achieving the expected standard in reading, writing and maths compared to 65% nationally!
