Until we get the all clear (again), our restaurant gatherings (Lulu’s weekly and Bob’s on the thirdSaturday) are cancelled. Galpin has not opened their meeting room, so we will not meet a as a club in thenear future.

Try as Harvey and Roberta may, it’s difficult to try to plan tours under these conditions. Let’s give them ahand: a birthday - get several cars to go by and honk, a retirement… an anniversary…

Some of us just get in our A’s a go for a ride. How about calling a local buddy and ask if he /she would wantto tag along - to In & Out, to get an ice cream cone, to the racetrack, to the strip club. Just get out.

    Look ahead…

    HELLO? HELLO?

    ? HELLO???

    ANYBODY HERE????

    Important announcement from your board…

Notes from Bob Brown (Membership) and Stan Monheit (Treasurer)

After our last virtual board meeting on September 8th, we unanimously voted to suspend clubdues for 2021. We have been in a holding pattern with Covid 19, without any generalmeetings, no expenses to speak of (except for Ron Mosher’s new spa…LOL) and only a fewlimited tours. Hold onto your due’s money for 2022.

Additionally, we also decided not to produce a 2021 Roster. Although, we did add three newmembers this year after our 2020 Roster was printed, we felt it would be better to post thosemembers in our Rumble sheet so you could add them to your “New Members” section ofyour 2020 Roster.

The third and final board member decision was to keep the same board members serving intheir same positions through 2021. If someone has an objection to this decision or if there issomeone with a desire to serve on the board, please contact our President Russell Buelna.

Other than that, we all are looking forward to the day we can all be together and enjoy ourclub meetings, friendships and share a laugh or two together. In the meantime, stay safe!

WE DID IT! THE CLUB ACTUALLYWENT ON A REAL LIVE TOUR! Doing a 2

page spread on an eight car tour is just indicative of thedearth of activities that we’ve had this year. But this

tour was exhilarating since we haven’t done this in such along time! It was so good to see and visit with all the attendees, tosee how the cars ran - waterworks and all and finally to embracethe grandeur and majesty of Elizabeth Lake! Thanks to all howmade the trek and let’s do it again real soon (if not a bit cooler!)

Way to go board! Waiving the dues for 2021 is a great gesture onyour part and recognizes this crazy situation we’ve been enduringfor 6 months now and let me be the first to say thank you forstepping up for another year. Maybe in 2021 we’ll see howPresident Russ actually presides over a meeting. He’ll probablyhave to go to YouTube to find out how it’s done.

It’s exciting that Sondra now owns Mario’s Roadster - see thestory on page 8. And that event spurred me to think about thatwonderful guy. I hope that members who have joined us since2015 might get an idea of what a terrific guy Mario was.Very few folks are universally liked. I think Mario wasone.

Zoot Suit Riot... pull a comb through your coal black hair!

Popularity of the Zoot Suits were have said to originate from Jazz and the BigBand music scenes of the late 20's. Zoot Suits may also have been the first typeof clothing to spark a Riot, but that was much later on in the 40's during the war.The Zoot Suit was a flashy trend for men. Most minority groups of the daypreferred to wear such style such as high-waisted, baggy trousers and wide lapel

coats. It was mostly worn by Jazzentertainers as an on-stage costumebut quickly gained momentumthroughout the 30's. The pants weredesigned in a way so couplesdancing the jitterbug or otherSwinger type style dances, wouldn'tget caught up in any lose handingfabric. Famous entertainers such asDizzy Gillespie and Cab Callowaywere big on wearing the Zoot Suits, even Mexican-American laboractivist Cesar Chavez.

    Follow Us on Instagram..

Some of you may know we have an active Instagram account. Instagram has been very popular forsearching pictures of interest. Facebook owns Instagram, but Instagram has became increasinglypopular over the past several years. The club has an active account, and I encourage you all to follow.Heck, you may enjoy "following" an account that shows all Models A's or classic cars in general. You can literally find anything searched for. If you do join by adding this App to your Smartphone or Tablet, you canfollow our clubs account which is "@sfvmodelaclub". Here's some basic instructions to add this App.

    1. If using a Smartphone or Tablet, open up the App Store(Apple) or Play Store(Android), and search "Instagram".2. Download the App to your smartphone or tablet and create an account.3. Once created, you can now use the search function to find personal accounts, company accounts, etc.4. Once you find an account of interest(Family members account or Brand name account), you click "Follow" so thatevery picture/post they add to their account, will show up in your news feed in which you can scroll through.5. Another popular function to use for finding Model A's for example would be to use a "hashtag" which is the symbol,#. To find all pictures of a Model A that accounts have posted, you could type into the search function something suchas #fordmodela or you can type in something like #roadsters, #classicford, #vintagecars, #oldcars, etc. You get thepicture! Hope to see you online!

(Ed. Note - I asked Russ to write this up. He put together a wonderful Instagram page and our little club is being exposed to 150+ followers. Try it.)

Purchased in 2004. My dad bought the Model A, we drove around theblock and parked it in the garage. At the time it needed a new carburetor –we did that. It also needed a radiator flush, but we did not do that. The carhas been sitting ever since. It’s a little dusty in the photos, but it has beencovered since the day it moved in. I’m looking for this car to have a homewith someone who appreciates the Model A, and I don’t want it to go to achop shop and turned into a rat rod. Thanks a bunch for your interest.

    Anything special happen in September?

    Things we all need

On Sept 3, 2020, (editor) Jim sent out an e-mail stating thatClaudette Brossard was interested in selling her dad’s (Mario’s)dream car. A 1930 Deluxe Roadster. Sondra asked me if I hadseen the e-mail, to which I said yes. I also said, we do not need,or have room for another car. I was quickly informed that this is

“Mario’s car weare talking about”.She (Sondra)immediatelycalled, Claudette. We already own Mario’s Sport Coupe. The next day after Sondrahad spoken to Claudette again I wasinformed that we were going to go toLos Angeles to meet with Claudetteand her family to LOOK at the car.Sondra has a birthday in September, and I was perplexed as what to get herfor the occasion. Problem solved! Wepurchased the car and drove it homeon the freeway. This car had beensitting for 5 years and drove like a

dream. Claudette’s husband Bill, had changed the oil, drained and replaced the gas,and installed a new battery. The car runs like a champ, birthday gift covered!!

“Does anyone know where Mario is?”

This was a familiar refrain on club tours between 2006 and 2015.Regardless of where the club went and as meticulous as the routedirections were, Mario had a tendency to get separated from the herdand go about his merry way, oblivious to the fact that there were noother Model As within 6 mikes of him! Born and raised in Cuba, hefled under the Castro regime and landed in California, where hebecame the facilities manager of Avery Label in Pasadena. Mariowas a smallish man who enjoyed big stogies, had an easy andboisterous sense of humor and doted on his amazingly talentedgrandson, Christian. He served on the board as V.P. Andparticipated, in his own fashion, in a great many of the clubactivities. Fighting his failing eyesight, Mario sold his Sport Coupe to Steve andSondra. His intention was to keep the Roadster for Christian, the accomplishedpianist, who graduated from the prestigious Colburn School in Los Angeles and isnow a music and composition major at NYU. In a way, the beautiful roadster will remain part of Christian asthe proceeds from the sale of the roadster will help fund a Steinway piano for his future endeavors!

Best of luck to you, Christian. We know your grandfather is still very proud of you! And, you know what, itwas fun just to think back on Mario and the joy he brought to our club. For you who never had the opportunityto meet Mario, you missed one hell of a guy. And we guess where is now!

A quest to gaze on fair Elizabeth

Seven Model As and one modern car arrived at Carol and Ron’s right on time at 9 AM on Friday September 18for an official club outing! The group included President Russ with his guest Dylan, Carol and Ben, John and

Nadine, Valerie and Carroll, Harvey, Mike P, Mike C (in his modern, which he reminded us us constantly had a radio and air-conditioning), tourleaders -Carol andRon and Jim.After a shortdrivers’ meetingwe headed out -over to McBeanParkway east toSan FrancisquitoCanyon Road andafter that I just

figured I follow the Model A in front of me. We wereon our way traversing ‘Model A roads’ to ElizabethLake. I am not familiar with Elizabeth Lake, buthaving Googled Lake Elizabeth, I found out that ITwas in Northern California. Elizabeth Lake was justdue west of Lancaster. With little other informationfrom Google, I let my own imagination run: Elizabeth- Elizabeth Taylor, a woman known for her classic

beauty and her gorgeous violet eyes, thus, thought I, thislake would shine in violet radiance with the waters a-shimmering! The ride up was largely uneventful save forthe great show Russ was able to put on as he emulated OldFaithful with his radiator! (Full disclosure - I was stoppeddue to a very similar condition, but not nearly as dramatic!)After slaking our radiators we were off once more, imagesof sensual violet waters ravaging my mind. We came to astop sign and turned left (because the Model A in front ofme did) and not too far down the road, came to the turn of for Elizabeth Lake.

    Elizabeth (con’t)

At my first witness of this expanse, my fantasies were fulfilled except for 2 things: there was not violet and therewasn’t any water, but there was a shaded area for lunch and constant cool breeze andgood company to eat with. Safe distancing was observed for the most part and maskswere worn. We were able to catch up with each other and had a fine old time. Subwayseemed to be meal du jour and Ron even demonstrated how to eat potato chips Afterabout an hour, we decided to tear ourselves away from this natural beauty and headover to Lake Hughes Road and down to Castaic. It’s funny how you seem to have overheating problem going DOWN hill. Our route took us through the area that fireravaged about a month ago and the destruction is incredible. The caravan turned intothe overlook at Lake Castaic and it was a beautiful sight - the lake nearly full andwater glistening bright aqua. It made up for the lack of violet at Elizabeth. Continuingdown to the metropolis of Castaic, we drove through the Tastee Freeze and assembledin a parking lot up the street. Mike C announced that the temperature a balmy 101degrees. Thanks, Mike! Having finished our cool treats, back on the road through Castaic, under the freeway to theOld Road and home again, nearly without incident, except that my roadster decided to heat up again, so we pulledover, gave her a drink, as as it was all down hill from there, got home safe and sound. But, boy, it was GOOD to getout!

Thanks, Ron and Carol, for a wonderful day!

    Thanks, John, for thepictures.

Friends and vendors to the hobby. Make sure we support them!

A few words about Alan:Back in the late 1980's just after we joined the San Fernando Model A Club, Charlie and Betty Salverson, my late wife Elaine and I decidedthat we would venture to Santa Ynez for a meet we heard about called "Wings 'n Wheels." Salversons had a 1929 Sport Coupe, while the Smithssported a 1930 Coupe. The problem was that Smiths also had an airplane, a near antique, a 1950 Beechcraft Bonanza that we wished to take to theMeet, as well as the Ford. The ladies had a Woodland Hills Woman's Club friend whose husband we conned into driving the Smith's Coupe. This leftKeith free to fly the Bonanza and the three ladies to Santa Inez for the Meet. As expected, we all had a ball! After the Smiths and Salversons regular attendance at Wings 'n Wheels, we convinced a group of the San Fernando Members that they should joinus and they soon became regulars at the Meet as well. None were more loyal attendees than Susie and Alan Bennett. Alan regularly organized agroup to attend the outdoor play on Thursday night. I don't think that there were any with better attendance. After Elaine's passing and Joannand I had wed, we also were regular attendees and I even got the job as Registrar when Leo Gay passed and the Vintage Aeroplane Association tookover Meet Sponsorship. On many occasions that Joann and I attended, so too did my younger son, Terry and his family of four. Our granddaughterKristine loved going there. It was very exciting for her. Krissie was a 'Special Needs' child, but was excited by her surroundings and lovedmaking friends with anyone who paid attention to her. From the very start she was attracted to Alan, mainly because he recognized her needto be 'friendly.' I mentioned to Alan how pleased my family members were to see this attachment between himself and my granddaughter. Hisexplanation; his brother had 'special needs' and he had nurtured him and it was a natural thing for him to reach out to my Krissie. Over theyears, I have always admired Alan for this tenderness towards those who need this kind attention. I have yet to tell Krissie that Alan is nolonger with us. I know this will be a very sad time for her.
