DISASERTe missus and I have been very conscious about thenvironment or quite a ew years now. We recycle even tinybits o plastic, cardboard and paper. We hate wasting electricityood and most o our clothing comes rom second hand shopsSo it is very bothersome to nd that we may be harbouring anenvironmental disaster. Having just celebrated Tanksgivingand having received a ew mornings o rost, I am reminded thathis is the time o year that both humans and animals try andatten up or the winter. So ar my progress is going ne, but am concerned about how the animals are making out. It appearthat a big black (bear???) is cleaning out every apple tree withinmiles. Te deer are starting to line up and march in protest tothe devastation o their ood supply.

Working on my woods road a ew days ago, I had to move the

tractor back a little urther and as I am climbing back up onthe backhoe I look across into the woods and there are two doestaring at me. It was clear rom the look that they were givingme that they were holding me responsible or the apple shortageTey described the monster that was devastating their oodsupply and it sounded like a bear to me, but when they told methat his name was Te Jet, I almost ell o my seat. Instantly, thepossibility o mistaking Te Jet or a bear was obvious.

But, what was I going to do?? Te vision o starving Bambijust didnt seem right. I I were to truck in loads o apples or thedeer, Te Bear would probably get at least hal o them and thecost would be two years o salary!!!

Tere has to be a solution to this problem!! I cant starve TBear and I cant starve the poor deer!!! So the deal Ive come

up with is that I am giving permission to all o the deer towander throughout all o Nauwigewauk, and eat their ll romevery garden they can nd. Unprotected cedar hedges, shrubsowers, vegetables, whatever they can nd is theirs. Oh Wait!! think that they have been doing that anyway!!

Many thanks to all the local gardeners who are sacricing ashare o your labour to help sustain the deer population. Te Jewill be able to munch and crunch or at least a ew more weekwithout having a guilty conscience. 800

My name is Madelaine Bedard and I am 13 years old. I recentlyachieved the highest award possible in the Scouting world, theChie Scout Award. I worked or over three years to get thisaward and I will nally receive it in December 2011. One o therequirements that took the most time and eort was to completea project on the subject o the environment and how to promotenature. I decided to work on a project that was dedicated to mylocal community.

Here I am, walking along an old beaten path, and noteven knowing thatits a trail full of history

I am a scout and a member o the 1st Ketepec scouts. We meetevery week and our leaders, Paul Crilley and Brenda Grahamare always trying to nd ways to introduce us to nature. A ewyears ago, we went on a hike up to Blueberry Hill. BlueberryHill is located behind the Worksae NB property, in Grand Bay-Westeld, NB. Te Nature rust o New Brunswick had the ideato create this nature trail on 50 acres o donated land. Its reputedto be a great place to take a walk, hike a trail or see bird andanimal lie.

As we walked up a path, we saw a bridge, a stream, lots o

beautiul tall trees, and a couple o little creatures. Paul was ullo inormation about the hill and told us that the path we werewalking on was once used to be to herd cows. At the top o thehill we ound a large clearing where he told us that there usedto be a armhouse. It was very interesting to me that that just aew minutes away rom my house there was a place with such ahistory.

Over the year, my curiosity was growing and I was still verymoved about my adventure at Blueberry Hill. I couldnt get theimage o the armhouse out o my mind. So, I researched, pulleda ew strings and talked to Paul, my scout leader about it. Pauintroduced me to Mr. Don Stevens and he currently lives inGrandbay-Westeld.

We met one evening and he told me a little bit about his

connection with Blueberry hill. Don is 83 and he was ull o storiesabout his youth. He told me thahis grandather and grandmotherEdward and Eva Stevens used tolive in that very armhouse. His dadwho was born in the early 1900s wathe youngest o their eight childrenand the armhouse was establishedin the 1880s. At the time it was notcalled Blueberry hill, it was calledStevens hill. o give me an image otheir property, Don said it started athe old Drive-In road and nishedat the Guardian drug store and wenall the way up to the river.

At the arm, his grandather hadan apple, pear and plum orchardTey picked blueberries andgooseberries, which I ound veryinteresting because this was the rstime that I heard o such a thing. Healso kept cows, pigs and sheep at hisarm. His grandather armed grainoats and hay and sold this to the city

Tis was dicult at the time because cars were a luxurious itemand they were very rare.

Don remembered back when he was a young teenager, duringthe start o the World War 2, ghter planes would pass by thehill. Sometimes they few so low that he thought he couldmake out that they were enemy planes. In the winter time, when they could not grow any crops, his grandather would cutsome o the many trees and sell them as re wood. SometimesEdward would go out to work at a wood camp to earn someextra money. Everyone contributed on the arm, even Eva, Donsgrandmother. She worked long hours raising eight children byselling preserves, eggs and butter. Even with all that work, timeswere still tough so they shed at Rocky Point and they rentedout their elds.

As I listened to his story, there was one thing that really gotmy interest; Don said that the Henderson brook used to be onlya couple o inches wide. Over the years the brook must havegotten washed out as it has since grown. When the scouts and Iwent or our hike, the brook was more than 3 meters wide.

In a couple a years rom now, hopeully, the Nature rust oNew Brunswick will be done its work preserving this beautiultrail. You will be able to take your amily or a short hike upto Blueberry Hill to enjoy the trails, the nature and the history.

Make sure you look closely, you might just see an apple or aplum tree or a bunch o gooseberries hidden along the path. Youmight see an old path where the cows used to wander and evenwhere an old armhouse once stood. With everyone supportingthis project, Blueberry Hill will soon be available to all as its atrail ull o history.

FROST DODGERS FOR THANKSGIVINGWhat a wonderul season we have had, a vase o Roses andAnemones with Matricaria (Fever Few) in ull bloom graced thethanksgiving table and by the next morning the delicate aromao roses lled the room. How blessed we are to be living in NewBrunswick!

Te Anemone amily is an extensive one with perennia varieties that range in size rom eight inches to three eetcoming in shades rom white through scarlet to deepest purpleIt is possible to still nd a ew o these at cut rate prices in themajor garden centers and with care and constant watering theywill last or many years. With our increasingly warming climateI am hopeul that the tuberous ones that we nd alongside theSpring Bulbs on sale now, will actually behave like the perennialsthey truly are and last or many years. Tese chaps look like

withered, attened, very miniature cow pats and its hard to tellwhich way up to plant them as there is usually no evidence oroot ends, however they are well worth a try since the blossomare magnicent with a complete range o color and last in thegarden or as cut owers or an extended time.Alongside these beauties in the Spring bulb collection is another

avorite amily, the Fritillaries, the F. Meliagris, sometimesknown as the snakes head or checkered lily can be naturalizedin a grassy area or i Deer are an issue, within the security oa enced area. Tey are dainty, seemingly ragile and come inshades o burgundy and white; one o my ondest childhoodmemories is o seeing elds o these growing wild and noddingin the breeze, well worth a try at. Te majestic Imperial Crownwhich comes in either yellow or orange is rather pricey, but wel

worth a go; because o its rather smelly bulb has the advantage orepelling rodents that are requently responsible or devouringmany types o our Spring Bulbs.

Aer many attempts at growing the English Bluebell, I havenally achieved several years o wonderul blossoms and ameeling condent that all is well there; its critical to get the nameright since there are so many diferent hyacinthoides, one needsthe non-scripta type. Tis is one o the many occasions whenthe Latin name is important as I ound to my cost, having raisedpink and white jobs by mistake on my rst attempts! You will nd many other delightul owering bulbs that can be

planted now, in good ertile soil at a depth three times the heighto the bulb. Water well and with any luck at all a beautiul homegrown bouquet may grace your Easter banquet.

My athers avorite quote was, Never put of till tomorrowwhat you can do today. Te very best advice or the potentiabulb grower, happy planting. 805

WHa are YOu HankFul FOr?I know Tanksgiving Day has already come and gone . . . so Im

a little slow. But as I sat at my table surrounded by amily as weenjoyed our Tanksgiving meal I could not help but think howlucky I am. Both o our children live nearby and visit regularly. We see our grand granddaughter most days, and have a new oneexpected next month. One daughter is studying or a new careerwhile the other is working on house renovations in preparationor said new grandchild. A son-in-law who went back to schoolhas now graduated and is starting a new career. Both o ourmothers still live independently and were able to join us orthe meal. Te weather that weekend was amazing, I still haveowers in bloom and walking in the woods is a joy with thebeautiul colours all around.Over the past weeks (months, in act!) I have been endeavouring

to obtain rom the government inormation on what my pensionwill be rom my 25 years o service that preceded OssekeagPublishing. Tis has proven to be an extremely taxing pursuit. Iam very thankul I no longer work in such an organization!Michael commented recently on an interview he heard on CBC

with Kevin OLeary o Dragons Den ame, who said that o allhis business endeavours those in which he had a partner werethe most successul. A partner can shore up the areas in whichyou are weak and give a dierent perspective on making toughdecisions. So this is my opportunity to acknowledge both my liepartner and my business partner. When I decided I wanted toown a publishing company, Michael was right there saying whatdo you need rom me. He has given his time and his knowledge(he oen jokes he is the lowest paid MBA in New Brunswick)

and his energy and I know Ossekeag would not have enjoyedthe level o success it has achieved without him. Having him atthe table with me (whether the dinner table enjoying ham orthe boardroom table arguing strategy) is one o the great joys

in my lie. I am thankul he has beenshoring up my many weak spots allthese years! Be thankul or problems. I theywere less difcult, someone with lessability might have your job.~ JamesA. Lovell. 801
