My Three Sons

Wishing a Happy Birthday to my Pastor and son Pastor

Victor Beck (October 27) and congratulations to you on your fifteenth year of serving as leader of HEARTLINE MINISTRIES job well done. October has proven to be a blessed month for this family. Last week big brother Pastor Beck performed the wedding ceremony for his baby brother on October 20, which is also the wedding anniversary of his middle brother, what a month to remember. As these three young men were growing up some said they would never mount to a hill of beans, look at them now. I am very proud to say that these are

my sons and they are very good and productive citizens within their communities. One is the Pastor of Heartline Ministries who's working to save souls for Christ, one is an A/C Technician who's trying to keep you cool while you study the word and one is an Electrician trying to make it brighter so you can see where you came from.We thank God for them and we pray that they become a Blessing to some other young man as they have been to myself and our family.

With LoveBig Ray

How can so many people all be so good at one thing? If there were a Complaining Olympics, they’d have more people as participants than spectators in the stands. What a concept...

So, would you win a medal? Would you be a participant or a spectator?

You know, complaining started way back in history. Look at Cain and Abel.

Cain complained bitterly when Abel seemed to do better in life. Look where that led. And then there were

the Israelites. Because of their chronic

whining, God let them wander in the desert for 40 years on what should’ve been an 11 day journey. They probably should’ve caught on after the first few years.

How many things do you think you’re not getting from God, because you can’t stop complaining?

Today people complain about pretty much everything. I can’t think of one single thing that pleases absolutely everyone.

Why is that? People have somehow

convinced themselves that they’re entitled.

It doesn’t really matter what it is, but people certainly aren’t going to wait for it, and it better arrive in perfect condition.

And oh yes, if, by some chance, you didn’t tell me about all the things that

could possibly go wrong with it from now until eternity......I’m going to complain to your company, my congressman, and let’s not forget my lawyer.

People have forgotten how to live as a Christian. Everywhere you look in God’s word, you’ll find scripture where Jesus talks about being grateful. Instead of whining about all that’s negative, Jesus preaches about looking for the positive.

The selfishness that seems to engulf everyone at times colors your view so badly you can’t see all the good things around you.

Sometimes people complain simply to gain attention. Bad attention is better than none, and it’s just a way to get others to notice.

What a sad commentary on the way we connect to one another.

A member of the Dallas school board recently suggested that all Dallas schools serve breakfast in the classroom to ensure that students do not go hungry, and that they have proper nutrition. Dan Micciche, a Dallas ISD trustee made the suggestion.

This newspaper supports the position and urges school officials to do all that they can to implement it.

Numerous studies have shown that students who receive proper nutrition have better grades and have better conduct than those students who do not eat appropriately

Many of our students are failing early in school. They have poor grades, bad attitudes and spend much of their time in the offices of the principals and other disciplinarians.

For years, visionary academics have said that adding simple nutrition to the diets of students would bring about radical changes. It is time that we followed their advice.

Given the advance of fast foods in our society, there are many children who come to school having eaten a breakfast of quickly cooked meals.

There is little evidence that any substantive nutritional value can be found in these meals.

There are some of our students who come from

homes where breakfast is not a meal that is served at all. That means that these young people begin their school days without anything in their stomachs.

How can we expect these people to learn if they are suffering from hunger pains?

To the credit of our school officials, the district began a pilot program in 2011 that served breakfast to children in seven district schools.

Today, sixty-four schools have breakfast programs. But the program is optional.

A large number of our students qualify for federally funded breakfast programs. We should feed all of them. When and if we do, we will see a welcomed difference in grades and behavior, the experts say.

I lived during through the New Deal, the social program that former President Franklin D. Roosevelt implemented to assist poor people, children and the elderly. Before the new deal reforms senior citizens were getting a raw deal. Before Roosevelt, elderly people were told “just go die” when you no longer have the strength to compete with swift and the abled.

The programs of the Roosevelt administration were strengthened by subsequent administrations headed by Presidents Truman, Carter, Kennedy, and Clinton. Our current president, Barack Obama, has put into place programs that assist the elderly and those who live on the margins of life.

Now comes presidential contender Mitt, the “flip” Romney who could care less about senior citizens unless they are wealthy, and his running mate, Paul, “howdy yall” Ryan whose prescription for economic dilemma is to build additional cemeteries where the bodies of senior citizens, dead and alive, can be placed quickly and without much fanfare.

That’s right, they believe that seniors should die, and could care less whether or not they have proper burials.

Romney, who is not qualified to be president, has selected as his running mate, an individual who shares an abundance of intellectual mediocrity with former vice president candidate Sarah Palin. And we all know where that ship landed.

And while Romney is rich, he has neglected to teach manners to members of his family. Witness the behavior of one of his son who said after the recent debate that he wanted to “take a swing” at president Obama for embarrassing his father.

All of us know that children learn conduct at home. Romney and his son ought to be ashamed of themselves. They are not because when they look at president Obama they do not see the president of the United States. They see the ancestor of slaves, and the first word that comes to their minds begins with the fourteenth letter of the alphabet.

If you are elderly, just die

Stop Complaining

PRAYERCLOSET

By Rev. Clarence Henderson

It is to our advantage as well as our privilege to enter into our place of prayer with great expectation. No matter where your praying ground is, it should always be your mountain of expectation. I discovered that my mountain of expectation becomes a breeding ground for my miracle. Perhaps you have a condition in your body that concerns you. Well, we all should have a heart to see the sick and the afflicted made whole. It is, after all, God’s will to heal and that was accomplished by the stripes that God bore for each of us. “He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by His

Hebrews 8:1-061The point of what we are

saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,2and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.

Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.4If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already men who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.

5They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[a]6But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is

mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.

A few weeks ago we looked at some attitudes we need to have when we’re facing difficulty. We reconsidered the fact that the problem is not always the problem.

The problem is our attitude, or our focus, about our problems. We need to focus on our Great High Priest, Jesus, who is able to help us successfully confront any problem.

Last year we gave attention to our minds. Today we want to give attention to our hearts. Ever sensed that you needed what we often call a change of heart? You know some things in your mind but brain function isn’t enough.

I want to approach Hebrews chapter 8” by talking about “What to Do When I Need a Change of Heart.”

It is one thing to change your mind what you’re going to think about it is another to have a change of heart. And both these things can be needed when we’re discouraged.

It is not that God does not care it is that our minds and hearts need

changing. That is why today’s key verse is Hebrews 8:10: “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.” Amen!

What we need is a supernatural act of God. This is a God-thing. There are so many times when I try to do something naturally that only comes supernaturally. I need to ascend to a higher plane.

Personally, I have often faced this in ministry. I try to do stuff for God by my own strength. It is not gonna happen. Even standing here teaching the Scriptures to you takes God giving me the heart to do it. I cannot do it on my own.

Do you have anything like that in your life? A relationship? A job? Finances? Forgiving someone?

Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. Circle “sat down.” Jesus “sat down” because He was finished.

He “sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven” because he was king as well as priest. The Old Testament priest never sat down in the tabernacle or Temple because he was never finished.

There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands.

And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law.

5 They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.”

When I need a change of heart By Henry Nelson

More medically underserved individuals and families will now receive full healthcare services from a new Mobile Medical van thanks to a partnership between Urban League of Greater Dallas and the Parkland Health & Hospital System.

“We are thrilled to be a partner for this mobile medical clinic because, like the Urban League, Parkland recognizes that to build a healthy community, we must be out in the community,” said Dr. Susan Spalding, Medical Director at Parkland’s Homeless Outreach Medical Services (HOMES) program, Youth and Family Centers and Juvenile Detention Services.

The fully operational Mobile Medical Clinic provides the same services that are available at large Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) neighborhood health centers including treatment of acute and chronic illnesses. It is staffed with a

nurse, medical provider and driver. The number of staff available will depend on the needs of a location.

The Urban L e a g u e , which also serves as the Dallas County C o m m u n i t y A c t i o n Agency, used funds received in the Stimulus Package in 2009 under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to purchase the mobile clinic.

“The funds received not only provided jobs but also health care services for the next 10 years,” said Dr. Beverly

Mitchell-B r o o k s , President and CEO U r b a n League of G r e a t e r D a l l a s . “ T h i s m o b i l e unit can now reach m o r e locations in Dallas

County and will provide much needed medical services to more homeless and low income individuals and families of all ages that we also serve,”

According to Dr. Spalding, these medical mobile clinics are the only options for some communities. “There are so many different causes of homelessness with patients having a

variety of illnesses and we want to treat them all,” said Dr. Spalding.

Since 2008, there has been a marked increase in the number of families served by the mobile clinics for medical services as well as the Urban League for help with mortgages, rent and utilities.

For over 30 years the Urban League and Parkland have collaborated to provide much needed services throughout Dallas County including Counseling For Homeless Prevention, the League’s Sickle Cell Anemia and Outreach Laboratory Testing, Community Screening for Preventable Disease Project and the HIV+ Links to Care Program. . Most recently, they teamed up to create a community garden that is housed at the Parkland Southeast Dallas Clinic on Elam Road and provides fresh produce to neighborhoods throughout that area.

Greenville, TX: The Parks and Recreation Department held its Freaky 5 K Run for your Life and Movie in the Park on Saturday, October 20. The department is committed to providing safe and entertaining recreational facilities and activities for the residents of Greenville, and pledges to maintain and uphold their commitment. Every year, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Department organizes several special events designed to bring the community together. Colby VanGrundy is the Director of Parks and Recreation. Well, it turned out to be exactly what was expected a success and lots of fun for entire families. A large crowd turned out for support and each participant in the race was more than confident that he/she could win as they give back for this important cause. One participant, Mrs. Sue Locke, stated that her daughter Dee, who was also in the race was an encouragement to her when she started running five years ago and that this was just another opportunity to keep her going on in her quest for life. The course started at the Aunt Char’s Pavilion in the Sports Complex. The Freaky 5k was made up of four categories; adult male 13 and over, adult female 13 and over, youth male 12 and under and the youth female 12 and under. The day turned out to be perfect for the run, with food and prizes. Contest rules were that you must wear Jaguar Bib-Chip and run, jog or walk across the finish line. There also was a costume contest judged by a panel. Registration automatically entered you in the contest in one of 2 categories, 13 and over and 12 and under with cash prizes. The prizes were 1st place $300, 2nd place $200.00, and 3rd place $100.00. To top it off, the movie Puss and Boots was put up for all to see and enjoy. Sponsors included Dr. Les Sandknop Family Practice, Cactus Saddlery, Magic Bubble Party Supply, Tyler Tyndell Photography and Subway who provided free sandwiches. Some vendors included K&K

Catering & B-B-Q, Marcus Perkins Shaved Ice Snow Cones and local business owner Evangelist Mary Dean of MJ Designs Boutique was on hand for support. The park proves to be the perfect place. It has the capacity to accommodate all the family fun daily, from sports tournaments and games to private pool parties. Recreational facilities are available for rental for an array of events and reservations are necessary. Availability is based on a first come, first serve basis. Recreation Coordinator, Kimber Patterson, on site at the event said that The Parks and Recreation mission is to promote involvement

and unity among friends, families, neighbors, and the community by providing entertaining, cultural, and recreational programs and activities. In addition, the City of Greenville offers a variety of recreational facilities to satisfy the needs of its diverse community members and visitors. By Lorie Blair Hey I am b a c k . A f t e r having s o m e den ta l w o r k

and life hitting me with all that it was worth I found myself between life, crisis and starving. Still looking to venture to new areas I had to stay close to Dallas so out of Pappasito’s Cantina five Dallas area locations I reluctantly drove up to the Northwest Highway for Just a Bite at Pappasito’s. I have a secret I really do not like Tex Mex but it is real popular here so I have learn to like it. Once seated my young server Chris Garcia came to serve me and help me with my choices. Seated next to me was the Kieffer family who was also a first timer

and they helped me with my selection; Combination (beef and chicken) fajitas with a sample of shrimp brochette. At Pappasito’s you get to choose how

you would like your beef prepared (rare, medium, well or any combination in between). I even got to sample the pulled pork. OMG!!!! Not one bad flavor out of the four choices. As with everything Pappasito serves it is fresh and from scratch!! Nothing premade nor premixed and it certainly shows in the taste. If you order a serving of guacamole it is made to order at your table. You can watch the tortillas

being made and served. On occasions I watched the guy making the tortillas walking to a table and serving them after completing the process of making them. Now there are 2 kinds of chips, the thin light ones for the salsa and then the thicker ones for the guacamole. Both are served warm and with abundance. Warning they are addictive and habit forming so do not eat too many before your meal. I had a chance to talk to the Kitchen manager, Jenn. She loves her job as much as my server enjoys his. Now there is way too much served for you to have Just a Bite so now that I am stuffed it is time for Just a Nap. Three thumbs up for a great meal.

Harambee! “How can we come together?”

We celebrate “Harambee” during this time of each year. As you may or may not know, “Harambee” means “All Pull Together.” We have come a long way but we surely have a long way to go. I wanted to find out from some of the older youth of our city how we as a world can come together. I met one young lady who has her own ideas about how it can be achieved!

“I think we should come together by learning about different cultures and we can learn to understand other cultures and learn to understand others.

I also think we should celebrate our ancestors sacrificed their lives for us to be where we are today.

Of course the greatest example is Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When you see interracial dating, playing and living together, I Ja’Lisa Brown think of and thank Dr. King.”

15 yrs old – 10th grade Fairy: “Out of the

mouths of Babe’s!” Thanks Ja’Lisa! You are soooooo right. If we work harder on showing love to each other, we will come together or get closer to it! Let’s just make sure that we do all we can as individuals! Maybe you have your own thoughts

about how we can love each other more. Each of us should do what we can. We can start by becoming more tolerant of others.

As you read this print, tell three (3) people that you love them! You don’t have to hug anyone or carry on

a conversation. Remember, “You don’t have to like someone to love them!”

Election day is November 6

A few Sundays ago, as I walked through the doors of True Lee Missionary Baptist Church, I was greeted with a joyful noise of praise songs flowing forth from the parishioners bathed in warm, radiant light filtering through the decades old stained glass windows of the historic sanctuary. We were gathered to honor the many years of service of Pastor Donald R. Parish, Sr. and his lovely wife Deborah. My maternal grandfather, Nicholas,

raised his family in a home just down the street from the church on Bertrand Ave. Yes, a “white man” in South Dallas – actually, a Croatian who immigrated through Ellis Island and brought his skills from the European marble trade to bear on such notable buildings as the Hall of State at Fair Park which was constructed for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exhibition. I grew up understanding the history of South Dallas – and still do.Decades later, I was so proud to

graduate -- ranked first in my class -- from the Dallas Police Academy in a ceremony at the Hall of State my

grandpa helped build. My shiny black shoes graced the equally lustrous floors which reflected my figure clad in a dark police uniform. Hours later, I would trade the glossy shoes for uniform boots and hit the streets of Southeast Dallas for my first patrol as a Dallas Police Officer. I also patrolled Pleasant Grove and Oak Cliff. My mother was the youngest of five

children, and her four older brothers all served in – and survived – World War II. I, therefore, grew up immersed in and appreciating the value of service to one’s fellow man, and this is what drove me – an entrepreneur and business owner – to volunteer for both military and police service at the age of 35. I was motivated neither by the desire to “rise through the ranks” or by a paycheck, but simply because of my great love for this place called Dallas that has been my home for over 46 years. As a proud United States Navy

Veteran and co-owner of a security consulting firm, I bring my leadership and management skills to work every

day. I pledge to do the same as your Dallas County Sheriff. I will boost morale which has been severely weakened by the current sheriff, Lupe Valdez, and scandals involving retaliation, time sheet fraud, and a rogue deputy tipping off the subject of a search warrant. I will increase the visibility of the sheriff’s office countywide, and significantly boost volunteer “posse” opportunities for you to join me in serving our fellow citizens. I will efficiently manage one of the nation’s largest county law enforcement organizations, and I will ensure that Lew Sterrett – the nation’s seventh largest jail – passes inspection every time. In short, I will make you proud, just as I would want my late grandpa to be.As I sat in the pew at True Lee, I

imagined how Nicholas may have walked past the church and waved or struck up a conversation with one of the members – perhaps one of the black gentlemen who, as truck farmers, helped him raise fruits and vegetables in his orchards which stood on the land which is now Frazier Courts Public Housing, where I kept

residents safe.Yes, I would want my Grandpa

Nicholas to be proud, and I would be honored to have your vote for Dallas County Sheriff. I’m running as a Republican, so please don’t simply vote “straight ticket”, but find my name near the bottom of the ballot and vote Kirk Launius for Dallas County Sheriff. I appreciate you and I’m ready to serve ALL the citizens of Dallas County as your next sheriff. Please LIKE my campaign on Facebook, and contact me with any questions!Kirk Launius, an Eagle Scout and

native Dallasite, is the Republican candidate for Dallas County Sheriff. You may contact him by calling (214)810-4523 or by e-mailing [email protected]

Launius believes election is an opportunity to improve the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department

I recently watched the documentary on ESPN called 30 for 30. Theses documentaries spotlight great athletes and great moments in American sports history. This particular story was about Ben Johnson and the controversy surrounding his 9.79 world record performance in the 1988 Olympic games.Ben Johnson was able to defeat iconic sports figure Carl Lewis and former world-record holder Calvin Smith in one of the greatest 100 meters of all times!!! Ben Johnson broke the world record in the 100 meter dash at the 1988 Seoul Games, but his legacy will forever be tarnished by his positive doping test shortly thereafter.ESPN’s 30 for 30 film 9.79 gave a deep insight into the world of track and field at the time Johnson tested positive. Needless to say, he wasn’t the only one doing it!Chances are, if one person is doing it, there are going to be other athletes that do it. In sports, it’s all about competitive advantage, longevity and winning. This is not to justify Johnson’s behavior, but it’s not just one guy making a bad choice. It’s human nature to compete in some way, shape or form. Sports are obvious examples, but many

everyday jobs are just as competitive. If your coworkers held an obvious advantage over you, what would you do?Steroids are not the smart thing to do,but it was the thing to do when Johnson was busted. Parts of the movie talked about athletes diluting their urine to pass drug test.Johnson said he was setup, and some one put something in his drink before he went into the testing room. In Olympic track-and-field events, it’s win or go home. That’s it, and that’s all, for an international event that only occurs once every four years.

This sometime creates an a t m o s p h e r e of the ultra-c o m p e t i t i v e , se l f -absorbed athletes eager to capitalize on their time in the Olympic spo t l i gh t .Be -cause of track’s individualistic nature, common

use of steroids create a vicious cycle. Athletes that are trying to compete naturally feel like that have to do it in order to keep up with their counterparts.Sprinters have to be cutthroat if they want to win. In the “Dash” you have 100 meters to prove yourself. They have 100 meters to justify years of training.Steroid use is nothing new in the world of sports, we’ve heard about BALCO and the Tour de France, but what this film showed was Steroids and performance-enhancers are commonplace in today’s sporting society. The thing that stood out in 9.79 was the widespread assumption that everyone was doing it.Trying to gain a competitive advantage is, more or less a given in sports today. 9.79 gave an interesting insight into that same world, over 20 years ago!May God Bless Us and Help Us Change the World!!!Mark A Toliver II

Mario A. Baker Foundation 10th Anniversary Golf TournamentWithin five months of

each other, The Baker family lost Mario A. Baker (34) and Carlyle J. Baker (59) a son, brother, husband and father from heart failure. These

sudden and unexpected deaths of our loved ones, gave our family the passion and vision to start the Mario A. Baker Foundation in an effort to help others who

suffer with this critical disease.

In their loving memory, the Mario A. Baker Foundation was formed as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation by

the family members of Mario & Carlyle Baker in June 2003. Our mission is to work to educate our communities on heart disease, while assisting financially with the research and development of cures for this deadly disease. Heart disease is the Number 1 cause of death in the United States and The Baker family decided we did not want another family to experience the pain and the loss that we felt

and feel every day. Since our inception,

MABF has donated more than $50,000 to numerous organizations supporting the education and fight for Heart Disease including, The American Heart Association, our prime recipient, and others. This year marked our 10th anniversary to host the Mario A. Baker Foundation annual benefit Golf Tournament. This tournament has served as a medium to provide a wide spread of programs and fun-filled event in an effort to make a positive impact in our global community and to keep our loved ones legacy alive. The tournament is held each year around Mario's birthday.

On the last Friday of the Texas State Fair Big Tex met his untimely death. He did not die a death of violence or a death of old age. He was only 60 years old, so he wasn’t really old or was he? I am amazed how the announcement that Big Tex having reaching 60 years old has died. WHAT? When I heard the first news report on the radio at first I thought it was a dignitary who had met their untimely death and had to focused on the report to ascertain who it was that had passed. Big Tex, the inanimate talking icon that greeted all

State Fair attendees caught on fire and within 10 minutes he was no more. One of many caller called into 911 announcing that a 50 foot Cowboy was on fire at the fair ground. After the firefighters extinguished his body state fair worker removed his remains in a body bag. And by Monday the passing of Big Tex is still headline news. Well, I guess so since I am still writing about it. Ha! Was it sabotage? No, an electrical shortage in his right foot caused his untimely demise. He started this season with issues and had to have his arm stabilized; meaning he did not wave this year. So, was it inevitable that he would be met with issues this year? Does this mean his electrical parts cannot withstand the years of use making him old? Let’s see, he only waved at us for 10 years. Hmmmm…. And then all the attendees who came the last two days to drop off flowers and things to memorialize Big Tex. Really people??? Please tell me that the record breaking crowds the last 2 days were there to enjoy the fair, the rides, the artery clogging foods, and not drop off flowers and pay respects to Big Tex. Driving around the city on Saturday

I was amazed that the new electronic billboards, you know the ones that have a series of ads, now have added the death announcement of Big Tex. What the heck...Big Tex dies (1952 – 2012). Big Tex Obituary (Timeline) Big Tex was born and started his service October 1952.1953 He speaks for the first time but has a vocabulary that is limited to “Howdy, Folks”. 1997 Body is transformed to include 4,200 feet of steel rods. 2000 He waves to those who pass by him in the Midway but does not take a step.

2002 He gets new clothes. He has worn the same clothes for 50 years. 2012 He dies but it is predicted that he will be back 2013 to do better things. So, next year when we see Big Tex again will this be his second coming or like the cartoon characters of old nothing can destroy our state fair icon… Beep Beep…

Keeping Seniors HealthyWWW.DFWELITENEWS.COM OCTOBER 26, 2012 19

By Joseph Green-Bishop

United Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading health insurance companies has identified a Texas based company as the leading healthcare provider in the country. The company, Move Baby Move, will be featured in the November issue of Black Enterprise MagazineThe owner of the company, Aaron

Palmer, who founded the company nine years ago with his late business partner,

Meranda Varnado, said that news of his company’s accomplishments was one of the proudest moments of his life.

At the same time, the death Ms. Varnado, who was only forty-five years old, nearly crushed his spirit. The news of the award came only three hours after she lost a lengthy battle with cancer. “I am proud that our company

received this award,” said Palmer, a native of San Jose, California who grew up attending the Church of the Living God in Oakland, California. “But there were still tears in my eyes and great pain in my heart because of Meranda’s death. We built this company together. We struggled and we sacrificed and now she was gone.”Palmer said that he would take

Meranda’s spirit to a conference in the Midwest next year where he will be presented with the award and that as the company grows Meranda’s sense of purpose and love of people will be at its forefront, it driving force.Palmer describes Move Baby Move

as an innovate exercise programs designed for senior citizens that can be performed while they sit in their chairs.

“Move Baby Move utilizes music that is culturally relevant to our participants, in combination with movements such as clapping of hands, taping of feet that reactive the neurons responsible for fine motor movement.”The program helps participants

strengthen their diaphragms, decrease the work of breathing, decrease oxygen demand and use less effort and energy to breath. The health education component of the program includes simply understood lessons on nutrition, in combination with holistic health, fitness components and exercise. In the past three years, Palmer and

Meranda have presented their program in venues throughout the United States, including the governor’s conference on aging in Iowa, the native American diabetes prevention conference in Arizona, the Oprah Winfrey boys and girls club in Mississippi, the 2009 Texas public health association annual conference, the Nortel employees health and wellness program, the American Heart Association, the Dallas area agency on aging, the national partnership for action to end health disparities and the state farm insurance company’s fifty million

pound health challenge expo.“When we started we saw a need to

help older adults regain some of the physical fitness that they had when they were younger,” said Palmer, a graduate of San Jose State University who worked in his family’s healthcare business in New Orleans. “Meranda had an illness and experienced tremendous pain. We understood what people faced when they experienced physical pain.”Palmer said that it was Verenda’s idea

to put together an exercise program that people could use while they were sitting. “She called me one night and we talked. That night the concept was born.”The two of them traveled throughout

the southwest during the past nine years, logging nearly 250,000 miles on Palmer’s 1995 Toyota truck. “Our program is about people,” he said. “We want to help people live longer and better lives. We want people to move and live. Just go to our website, MoveBabymove.com and begin to feel younger and look younger,” he said.

Women of Excellence - Tuskegee Airmen wives

Jackie Joyner Kersee with Move Baby Move owner Aaron Palmer at

KwanzaaFest 2010.

This year Mr. William “Bill” Blair, Jr. founder and publisher of the Elite News, a newspaper that has served the African American community for over 50 years will pay tribute to and honor the wives of the Legendary Tuskegee Airmen. The Famed Tuskegee Airmen, were Black Americans who during WWII, served as pilots, navigators and ground crew. They achieved a “double victory” over fascism in Germany and racism at home by displaying amazing piloting skills and unflinching bravery. Mr. Blair, through his “Women of Excellence Award” has recognized the achievements of African American women who have made a positive impact in the Dallas-Fort Worth communities. In choosing this year’s recipients, Mr. Blair continued with his theme of outstanding service as this basis of this award.

Consider this, for many years after the war, these men returned home to an ungrateful and hostile Nation that did not appreciate nor reward them for the many sacrifices that they made in order that all white and black alike, could enjoy the freedoms of this great Nation. Indeed, it was 2007, more than 60 years after the end of WWII, before the Airmen received the Congressional Gold Medal. And finally we get to see a major motion picture, “The Red Tails” in wide release that revealed the prejudices that the Airmen had to overcome and still fight and perform

with courage and conviction. You left the theater with tears in your eyes, but pride and admiration in your heart. Now many of these men are in their late eighties and early 90s. With crippled and injured bodies and unfulfilled dreams, their greatest allies

- their wives, in many instances were the only source of support that helped them to soar above

the hollow and broken promises made by their beloved Nation. And so, Mr. Blair has chosen five of the Airmen wives who live in the Dallas –Fort Worth area, for its “2012 Women of Excellence” award

and recognition. Mr. Blair will use the inaugural event “Celebrating the Legacy and the Ladies of the Legendary Tuskegee Airmen” which will be a Ribbon Cutting ceremony unveiling the newly expanded exhibit of the Tuskegee Airmen to honor these women for the outstanding support, sacrifice and contributions that they have made to their husbands, families and communities. This heartwarming reception and ceremony will take place at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, an aviation Smithsonian Affiliate Museum on Sunday, November 11, 2012 @ 2 pm. The museum is located at 6911 Lemmon Avenue, Dallas, TX. For more information on how you can be a part of this historic event, you may contact Inez Clark at (214) 364-1103 or send an email to [email protected].
