Civitas GES and La Universidad de Cienfuegos (UCf) is proud to invite you to Cuba on October 27th for the 1st Annual Workshop of Strategic Alliances for the Internationalization of Higher Education (TIES 2015). This four day Workshop is the first of its kind to take place on the UCf campus and at historical locations around the city of Cienfuegos. It has been organized in conjunction with Dalhousie University, Canada and Jönköping University’s School of Education and Communication, Sweden. 

For this inaugural year, universities, NGO’s and government officials from around the world will come together around three main goals: 

• Foster the current debate over the sustainability of Internationalization at Higher Education Institutions 

• Exchange criteria and find work strategies to further integrate international development in university communities 

• Contribute to the professional and scientific development of university staff responsible for International relations 

With all of the rapid changes between Cuba and the United States, this has become the must attend event of the year! This is your chance to see the campus firsthand, find answers, build relationships and gain access to Cuba as never before. This is the first event of its kind to be approved by both the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education and licensed by the US Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Now is the time to be a part of this historical opening.

Founded in 1979, La Universidad de Cienfuegos is one of the fastest growing university in Cuba. Its robust and active history of high performance, quality and achievement makes UCf one of the institutional leaders in preparing Cuban society for the demands of the 21st century.  Fully accredited by the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education, La Universidad de Cienfuegos system consists of nine institutions with a campus in each of the province’s nine municipalities. The main campuses, Carlos Rafael Rodríguez and Conrado Benitez Garcia, flank the historic center of the city. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site in one of the most affordable cities in Cuba. UCf consists of seven schools (faculties): 

• The School of Engineering (SI)  • The School of Humanities (SSSH)  • The School of Education Sciences (SES) • The School of Economic Sciences (SES)  • The School of Agrarian Sciences (SAS)  • The School of Physical Education and Athletics (SPC) • The School of Social Sciences (SSC) 

It also consolidates, promotes and develops science, innovation, and cultural programs according to the needs of sustainable development in Cienfuegos and the country in adherence with standards of international excellence.  

There are 4,092 undergraduate and 2,449 for graduate‐level students. Over 2,000 international students have graduated from UCf representing 68 different nations. Its strength lies in its long term commitment to internationalization and the creation of global opportunities for academic communities to build trust and sustainable partnerships worldwide. As part of its commitment, UCf has collaboration agreements with foreign institutions throughout the world. Among them, 30 in Europe, 9 in the United States and Canada and 107 in Latin America and the Caribbean. La Universidad de Cienfuegos has also shown outstanding results through the international collaboration and strategic alliances with different NGOs, local state and private institutions, embassies and other partners.

If you are interested in presenting at the Workshop, you should send your abstract to the Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee via email (dri@ucf.edu.cu) by July 31, 2015. There are six proposed topics for paper submission. The six suggested topics are: 

• Distance Learning and its Role in the Sustainability of Internationalization at Home  • Cooperation of Universities for Sustainable Development • Management of Programs, Projects and International Networks  • Professionalization of International Officers • Forming an International Student Body: Its Relevance and Impact  • Internationalization of the Academic Curriculum 

The abstract should not exceed 500 words and no more than 4 or 5 key terms. Please also include your full name, institution, address, country, telephone number, fax and email address. The deadline for final papers is September 4, 2015. Papers should contain the following information: Title/ Authors/ Institution/ Country/ Email. The papers should be written in Arial 12, single space, 8½” x 11” paper (21,59 cm x 27,94 cm), maximum length of 10 pages, indentation 2.5” on each side, and using Word 6.0 or later. The text should provide information about the objectives, the methods used, the results, conclusions, and bibliography used. The work should be sent in a compressed format, not exceeding 2.0 Mb in size. 

The organizing committee will make its final decision on papers by September 21, 2015. If you are selected, you may be paired with another panelist to encourage discussion at the workshop. If you have any questions, you can email Civitas GES at CubaPrograms@CivitasGES.com

Protected from the Caribbean Sea by a bay with the same name, Cienfuegos is approximately 160 miles southwest of Havana along Cuba’s southern shore. With a population of just over 186,000, the city has all of the amenities of a big city while still maintaining its small town feel. Known as “La Perla Del Sur” or the Pearl of the South, The City of Cienfuegos was originally settled by French and Louisiana colonists in 1819. The city’s French neoclassical style earned the historic center its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 2005 for implementation in urban planning. The city's beauty is rivaled only by the natural marvel that surrounds it and the warmth of the people who live in it.
