Hi everyone, can you believe it is October already…this year has flown by and the holidays are coming quick. With the year winding down, it’s time to work on the BOMA Board of Directors for 2009. I have contacted several of you to find out your interest in a board position or possible leadership in the near future and I thank those of you who expressed interest. We have received a few nominations for next year’s board which is wonderful. If anyone else is interested in serving on the board, be-coming President Elect or President some year, please come forward and let us know. Huge thanks to everyone who had anything to do with the Golf Tourna-ment; the golf committee members, the wonderful generous sponsors and the volunteers. We could not have done it without everyone pulling together. It was a great day for golfing with perfect weather. We finished off with a wonderful banquet including awards and raffle prizes. Thanks again!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT By: Tina Smith, President BOMA of Greater Tucson

Tips to Maximizing Performance in the Green Computing Trend With attention shifting from strictly performance to performance with energy efficiency, performance-saving measures are needed now more than ever. Here are the some tips to maximizing performance. 1. De fragment hard drives: A primary and extremely common barrier to performance is disk file fragmentation, in which files are split into pieces (fragments) in order to maximize disk space. Regular defragmentation is vital and is performed at most com-puter sites. With today's enormous disk capacities and file sizes, however, attention must also be paid to the defrag-mentation technology. Scheduled defragmentation, in most cases, can no longer keep up with ever-escalating frag-mentation rates, and sites would find greater benefit from a defragmenter which runs constantly and automatically, in the background, with no impact on system resources. 2. Make sure anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are installed, running and up-to-date. Viruses and espe-cially spyware can work insidiously, unseen inside a computer, drastically hindering performance. Of course, if not caught, viruses can do much worse than hinder performance, so it behooves everyone to insure reliable anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are installed and running. 3. Reduce number of running programs. Checking over servers and especially user systems, how important is it

that all those programs are running? Any running program will be chipping away at pre-cious system resources, especially CPU and memory. It behooves computer sites to implement policies and restric-tions on applications to be run, and to periodically check running applications to see how necessary they really are. We contact each Principal and Additional Principal members at the first of each year to ask them for complete reports to be sub-mitted to International prior to their deadline in March of each year. BOMA's infor-mation that they will disseminate will be listed by city, type of building and square footage. They will show the average, me-dian, low, and high benchmarks for each category. These reports give all of us the ability to compare and know all income and ex-penses reported in the United States and Canada. Tucson Water’s WaterSmart Business Program

This year, Tucson Water is launching the new WaterSmart Business Program. The program is the result of a collabo-ration with business leaders, conservation advocates, and landscaping and irrigation firms. The WaterSmart Business program is intended to assist those business owners and managers who want to conserve water, save money and contribute to a more sustainable community. Participants will evaluate their water uses (conduct a self-audit); develop a Water Management Plan; and create a Water Budget. A multi-tiered certification program will allow a WaterSmart Business to be recognized for incorporating conservation Best Practices at the Copper, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels depending on the level of water saving devices and practices used. Businesses will receive public recognition, signs, plaques, advertising logos, discounts, networking op-portunities, variances from future water restrictions, and more! The program will offer educational and training opportunities to interested businesses, and begins this fall with a series of workshops in October (see list below). As the program expands over time, we anticipate that pursuing a WaterS-mart Business certification will become a standard practice for Tucson’s commercial community. To learn more about this program call Tucson Water’s Public Information Office at 520-791-4331 or visit our conservation web site at www.tucsonaz.gov/water/conservation
