WELLNESS

Niloofar’s Wellness Tip

National Mental Illness Awareness Week During the first full week of October, NAMI and participants across the country are raising awareness of mental illness. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care. Each year, the movement grows stronger. During Mental Illness Awareness Week on Oct. 2-8, join NAMI in shining a light on mental illness and replacing stigma with hope by taking the #StigmaFree pledge. Members of the Wellness Council will be down in the lobby at noon throughou t the week, where you can have your photo taken along holding up the hashtag #IAMS TIGMAFREE. Just last week, we had posters made of out of the photos of last ye ar’s participants . You can find these posters on the 4th floor bulletin board in the hallway outside the Gold Unit, the 5 th floor bulletin board just in front of the elevator s, and in the Years 1 and 2 Office over at Volker. The poster includes results from the 2015 Student Health Survey conducted at UMKC which indicated that 98% of UMKC Students believe it is ok to get mental health care when you need it. The survey also reflected that increasing numbers of students are seeking out mental health treatment for their friends and encouraging friends to seek out counseling. Please take a moment this week to take a stand agai nst stigma. Your pledge might make a world of difference to someone close t o you. And of course, if you are struggling or are worried about a friend, don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected] for an appointment.

Suicide Prevention Contest

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Contest – WINNER !

Thank you so much to all who took the time to take the 15 minute online Suicide Prevention Training. This year, we had a total of 40 students complete the training and enter the contest to win a basket full of treats! A name was drawn at random out of all the entries, and that name is….

KRISHNA TRIVEDI! Congratulations, Krishna! Even though Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is over, you can still take the training by going to www.asklistenrefer.org. You will learn about risk factors for suicide, what to pay attention to, and how to talk to someone you suspect may be at risk. And of course, if you’re concerned about yourself or a friend, don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected] to set up a session. ☺

Volunteer

Volunteer CMH’s Center for Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition (CH LNKC)

CMH’s Center for Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition (CHLNKC) wants to partner with UMKC med students to pilot a mentorship program for the children and their families enrolled in their weight loss programs. The vision is to design a program modeled after KCU’s CHAMPS program where medical students are trained and then paired with a child/family to coach and support healthy lifestyle behavioral changes. Those interested would benefit from first shadowing a group session or two this semester. Group sessions are typically 2-hour sessions 5-7 pm during the week. There are also monthly group sessions on the weekend targeted to maintain weight loss results and behavior changes made during the intensive intervention programs. If enough students are interested, the pilot mentorship program will be designed with a goal to start in January 2017 when the new weight loss groups at CHLNKC begin. CHLNKC is located on Hospital Hill at the corner of 22nd & Holmes, making it a fairly close option for those looking for more volunteer opportunities in the area.

Page 14: October 3 rd , 2016medicine.umkc.edu/docs/sa/announcements/2016/... · Student Health Survey conducted at UMKC which indicated that 98% of UMKC Students believe it is ok to get mental

Goals: ~ Equip med students with coaching skills applicable to all patient situations ~ Provide med students with volunteer and leadership opportunities and more experience working with children ~ Improve outcomes of weight loss programs at CHLNKC ~ Provide weight loss group children examples to become leaders among their peers If the mentorship program is not appealing or seems like too much commitment, CHLNKC still at least has a great need for volunteers to help manage and promote attendance to the weekly intervention and monthly maintenance groups. If you are interested in either of the opportunities, please sign up at the link below for the group volunteer times and/or updates on the pilot mentorship program. An account is not required. http://signup.com/go/FebqWy
