This past Friday, the state Attorney General’s Office, which said Holden Roofing, Inc. was charged in June, also said the roofing contractor has agreed to pay back money to all hom- eowners pressured into using their services. Homeowners liv- ing in communities that experi- enced severe weather incidents were reportedly approached by the company’s sales representa- tives as consultants, who visited individually with them, including senior citizens. The consultants, according to the state’s account, said they were offering their expertise to those wanting help with claims against adjusters and insurance carriers. This will prob- ably bring to mind similar calls made in this area. A “consultation and assistance agreement” by homeowners thought to be a free roof inspec- tion and work estimate would then be signed. But, it obligated a homeowner to hire the company or pay a penalty. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and the Fort Bend Junior Service League have teamed up once again.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the presenting sponsor of The Sugar Plum Market—a shopping extrava-ganza that you do not want to miss! This year, the Fort Bend Junior Service League has reg-istered over 100 vendors to be present. Proceeds are donated to local charities in the Fort Bend community, providing the women in Sugar Land a great reason to shop all weekend. The Sugar Plum Market will be Friday, November 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In an effort to educate the community about Breast Cancer and the importance of early detection, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will dedi-cate the Methodist Medical Minute trivia question on their Facebook page to the topic of

Breast Cancer Awareness. Each Tuesday, leading up to the first week in November, we will

post a trivia question on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Facebook page. By answering the trivia question your name will be automatically entered into the weekly drawing. The five chosen names will receive a pair of tickets to the 2011 Sugar Plum Market.

At the market, the Breast Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will have a booth where women can sched-ule their mammogram. Since early detection is the best fight against Breast Cancer, we believe it is essential that

we encourage the women in our community to have yearly mammograms.

Visit our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/MethodistSugarLand, and answer the weekly Methodist Medical Minute trivia question for your chance to win!

Do I really need to attend my child’s parent-teacher conference?

Yes! And for many reasons! The school system establishes parent-

teacher conferences in order to build relationships between the teacher and the student’s parents, which is a holistic approach to any child’s well-rounded development. Since parents are not able to observe their children in the school context, teachers are able to communicate the successes, needs, and areas of work for the student. In addition, when parents choose to make these conferences a priority, they are modeling for their children the importance of academics as well as reinforcing the importance of doing well in school academically and socially. After your conference, you are better equipped to encourage your child’s strength and weaknesses! Way to go, Mom and Dad!

Is there anything I can do to hear better in a noisy restaurant?

You may find these suggestions helpful:

1. Plan ahead by picking a quieter restaurant. Try to find carpeted restaurants that have chairs with rollers on the legs (thus preventing an annoying scraping sound when they are moved), plants, and sound

absorbent materials on the tables and walls.2. Go to your favorite restaurants, so you already

know their specialties and options, such as choices of salad dressings or side dishes.

3. Pick a table in the least noisy part of the restaurant (e.g., away from the kitchen, bar, wait service stations, etc.).

4. Ask for seating in a well-lit area.5. Remember that even people with normal hearing experience greater

difficulty in a noisy listening environment than they do in a quiet listening environment. So, don’t expect to do as well with your hearing aids in the noisy restaurant as you do in the quiet of your home.

6. Sit with your back to the window, so that lighting is on the speaker’s face, not in your eyes.

7. When possible, indicate choices before you’re asked. Examples: “I’d like a salad with Italian dressing” or “I would like a burger, no fries.”

8. Ask the waiter/waitress for a printed list of the specials of the day.9. Use directional microphones and/or an FM system. If your hearing aids are

set to directional, be sure to sit with your back to the main noise source.10. Relax/breathe and enjoy the fine food and the company, even if you don’t

catch every word.

Can the insurance company refuse to work with the shop of my choice?

By law, an insurance company cannot refuse your request and must negotiate with the shop of your choice. However, the insurance company is not required to warranty the repair. Some shops warranty their own work, so if you choose a shop not authorized by the insurance company, address any concerns you may have directly with the shop. Remember it is in both parties’ best interest to get y our vehicle repaired correctly.

What are some of the advantages of refinishing?

There are many ad-vantages of restoration verses replacement. Like replacement there are

many choices of color and texture available for bathtubs and coun-ters but without the long wait time. In just days, not weeks, you can update the appearance & color of your bath or kitchen! A concern of many people these days is the environment. A study by the National Associa-tion of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) showed that remodeling can generate between 70 and 115 lbs. of waste per SQUARE FOOT! With refinishing of dam-aged and dated bathtubs, sinks, tile, and countertops we are reducing the amount of unnecessary waste clogging landfills. One of the best advantages is the cost savings. You can extend the life of your bathtubs, tile and coun-tertops for 15 years or more and save up to 75% over the cost of replacement.

Is there anything I can do to reduce my high monthly office expense?

This is a great question right in line with our trying economic times. ProStar Communications has an answer for reducing that large monthly expense for office space. If you have the type of business where you deal with your customers over the telephone instead of face-to-face, then a VIRTUAL OFFICE is

the answer for you. With a virtual office, you can work from anywhere…..even from home. You can have your own telephone number with customized automated attendant and voice mail box greetings. There are other great features like having your voice mail messages sent to your cell phone, BlackBerry or E-Mail. You can have a telephone set at your house or work on a laptop Softphone anywhere there is internet. And the best part is your customers will never know if you are at an office, at your home or in a hotel on vacation.

If you need office space to see clients, but want to downsize then send most of your employees home. With the Panasonic IP telephone equipment, we recently took a company with 20 employees that did a majority of their business over the telephone and set up 15 of them at home. At Classic Chevrolet we always get ask the question “What are the Benefits of Nitrogen in Tires”

Compressed nitrogen has long been used to inflate the tires of race cars and aircraft. Regular air is approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent water vapor. The oxygen and water vapor can degrade tires and wheels, shortening tire life. Nitrogen

inflation is now available from many commercial and passenger car dealers.

Slower Inflation Pressure Loss - A tire inflated with regular compressed air will lose about one and a half to two psi of pressure per month. Most of the pressure loss is due to oxygen molecules permeating through the tire rubber. Replacing the air with 95 to 98 percent nitrogen reduces the pressure loss to less than one-half psi per month. Since many drivers do not regularly check their air pressure, nitrogen inflation will allow their tires to maintain proper inflation levels longer. The major benefit of properly inflated tires is optimum

Oxygen can cause oxidation of tire rubber and corrosion of metal and alloy wheels. The water vapor in air can accelerate these processes, especially under pressure like the compressed air in a tire. The corrosive effects of both oxygen and water vapor are multiplied when a tire overheats due to under-inflation. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not cause corrosion or rust. Nitrogen also will not degrade the seals in air valves, further preventing pressure loss.

Improved Tire Life - Using nitrogen to pressurize tires has benefits over regular air for tire longevity. The greatest threats to tire life are heat and uneven tread wear. Both of these result from improper tire pressure; using nitrogen will maintain a more even tire pressure over the life of a tire. Also, the rubber inner lining of a tire will degrade over time in an air environment. As the rubber lining degrades, air pressure will be lost faster, accelerating the effects of under-pressurization. Nitrogen will not cause the inner lining of a tire to degrade, extending its useful life. According to the Innovative Balancing website, inflating tires with nitrogen can extend tire life up to 25 percent.

Classic Chevrolet Nitrogen for Life - Classic Chevrolet will install Nitrogen in your tires for $39.95 for life. That means when you purchase Nitrogen for your Vehicle, all of your tires that you purchase from Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land for the life of that vehicle we will put nitrogen in them for free.

Treatment for this Blood Vessel ConditionKawasaki disease is a type of vasculitis, or inflammation of the

blood vessels. Children, particularly under five years of age, are more com monly affected by the condition, although Kawasaki disease occurs rarely. Signs and symptoms may include fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and rash. Inflammation and redness of the eyes, lips, hands, and feet also may occur. Abdominal pain, weakness, and cough are other possible symp toms. Although the exact cause of Kawasaki remains unknown, an abnor mal immune response may cause damage to the blood vessels. Genetics may also play a role. A virus could also cause the condition, although no specific virus has been identified. Heart conditions may result as compli cations.

Intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) is a treatment that may be ad ministered within the first week to 10 days of the start of the condition. Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory and works to reduce fever, although there may be a concern for Reye’s syndrome. Aspirin should not be given to child with the flu or chicken pox. If the risk of developing a coronary artery aneurysm is high, a corticosteroid, such as methylprednisolone, may also be administered intravenously. If the arteries of the heart are affected, a cardiologist should be consulted.

Saying goodbye is hard to do.....Friends, employees, and family (my granddaughter) are sending kids off to college this year and I am astonished by the difference between going off to college now and how it was with my own children when they went off the college.

Because I was busy starting a newspaper when both Sherry and Michael went off to col-lege, I simply helped them load their cars and sent them on their way. They were barely going 200 miles from home so I didn’t think it necessary to accompa-ny them. Looking back, they were probably scared as they embarked on their new life, but I didn’t even think of that. I just figured they were so glad to get away from home that they would do just fine. Quite hon-estly, I didn’t think about it at all except to think that I was going to miss them somewhat.

For their whole time in col-lege, I visited them on cam-pus perhaps twice. I never saw inside one of Sherry’s rooms in Austin. I would pull up out front and honk if she were going to New Mexico or Colorado dur-ing ski season with us or to West Texas to visit relatives.

Michael was in San Marcus and I went there twice--once for some departmental tea with him and once to his apartment to move furniture.

Both kids came home on

weekends a lot that first year so I really didn’t have time to visit them anyway. They were always in Houston!

But now, kids go off to col-lege and their parents talk to them daily. The difference between then and now is the cell phone. When my own kids went to college, the only way I could call them or they could call home was if they called collect from the three or four phones located in the dorm, or from a pay phone.

I couldn’t call them except to call the switchboard in their dorm which would call up to their floor, then someone would go knock on their door.

In other words, it was almost impossible to communicate with them. Now cell phones allow both parties to remain in constant communication. This allows both parent and child to wean themselves away from each other in a more gradual manner. I figure by January, we won’t talk to my granddaughter more than once a week.

Dream on......I noticed that everyone’s favorite curmud-geon, Andy Rooney, turned in his typewriter on “60 Minutes” this week. In his farewell pre-sentation, Andy admitted that he first wrote whatever he was going to say then read it for the camera. So the typewriter (or computer) was still his form of communication. He just deliv-

ered it via camera.Well, I’m sure some of

my family and staff wistfully watched Andy make his farewell address and wished “if only....”

I’m sorry to disappoint my detractors, but I ain’t retiring. Not for a long time. Like Andy, I feel I have the perfect job.

I can flit around the county and complain about various things or I can reminisce about days gone by or I can try to inform and educate about some-thing happening in the county, state, or even world. And some weeks, I try to do all three. Why would I want to quit a job like that?

So forget it! I had one elected official tell me not too long ago that before they did something, they think about whether they want to see their actions in Bev’s Burner.

Now who in Fort Bend would

take over the job of keeping Fort Bend straight? The Sun? Nobody even knows anyone over there nor do they ever see them at any events. P.S. I may not be there but my eyes are everywhere. The Fort Bend Independent (not)? Heck fire, they only have an answering machine.

So I might retire if someone came along and had the guts to use a proctoscope on elected officials. And speaking of elect-ed officials.....The main reason I regret Rick Perry running for president is that now every-body all over the world knows the type of person Texans elect over and over to run our state. He touts his record and come to find out his record includes giving money from the Texas Enterprise Fund to such crooks as Countywide Mortgage and Washington Mutual and their subsidiaries engaged in risky lending shortly after receiving grants from the guv’s private taxpayer slush fund. If you remember, this risky lending lead to a whole mess of foreclo-sures and Texas was left with a diminished treasury. So the state had to cut funding for schools and firefighters and policemen, but the state continued to pay for Rick Perry’s extensive travel while he was living in a $10,000 a month housing.

It’s funny to me that Rick Perry is a millionaire and has never done anything but draw a state paycheck. Something is wrong here.

Then we notice that he gets real ticked off if anyone ques-tions him about his actions. He draws up high behind and says “you have no heart” or “do you think I would sell out for $5,000?”

No we don’t governor. We think it would take a lot more than $5,000.

Like most con men, Rick Perry has great personal charm. I’ve met him several times and he always shakes your hand and

looks you in the eye like he wants to go steady with you. And that’s just the men he meets..

Astronomy Day 2011 slated for Oct. 8Astronomy Day 2011 will be

held on Saturday, October 8, from 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s George Observatory. The observatory, located in Brazos Bend State Park, is home to one of the largest telescopes in North America that is open to the public on a regular basis.

Activities for both kids and adults will be offered at this free event with numerous astronomy and science related presenta-tions and displays including a rare display of meteorites and lunar rocks, solar telescopes for viewing sunspots and solar prominences, button making and face painting, and informa-tion for beginning astronomers. The Challenger Center, also located at this facility, will stage flight simulations to the moon.

After dark, the focus is on the telescopes. Free passes to the large dome will be given out starting at 3:00 p.m., so come early to claim a ticket for view-ing through this 36” research telescope as capacity is limited. All other telescopes, including two smaller domes and dozens

of other scopes on the deck, do not require tickets and will be up and running throughout the evening starting at 6:00 p.m. Guided by amateur astronomers from local area clubs, you will be able to see details of Jupiter and the moon as you’ve never seen before, along with galax-ies, planetary nebulae, star clus-ters, and other deep sky objects.

Food and refreshments from Chick-fil-A will be available for purchase, and the George Observatory gift shop will be open during the entire event with snacks, drinks, and sou-venirs.

This event, made possible by the combined efforts of numer-ous local astronomy clubs, is free and open to the public. Admission to Brazos Bend State Park is $7 per person with free admission for kids under 12. Visit http://www.astronomyday.net for directions to the park and more information.

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

RAMost people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) develop issues related to the

foot or ankle. This inflammatory condition produces substances that inflame joints throughout the body. When RA affects the feet, it results in pain, stiff-ness, and swelling. Corns or bunions may develop, and toes can curl and assume a claw or hammer toe position. Foot bones may shift and cause the collapse of the long arch, resulting in flatfoot. Some of these issues can be addressed with surgery. Among the most successful surgeries is fusion, in which the cartilage is removed and the bones fused in place. A bone graft may be implanted to unite the bones. Although loss of motion results, the patient achieves freedom from chronic pain.

Without proper early management of the feet, rheumatoid arthritis will slowly deteriorate the range of motion and flexibility of your foot. Take the road to happy, healthy feet and call us today. We treat all members of your family, from kids to grandparents, for all kinds of foot problems. PH: 281-980-3668. We are a multi-faceted podiatric practice, offering conservative and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

HINT: Medication, exercise, and surgery can alleviate the effects of RA and may slow its progress.

According to statistics gath-ered from various agencies to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Ft. Bend County is part of the corridor that is considered and referred to as “the drunk driv-ing capitol of the United States”. There are more deaths, injuries, and arrests in the Southeast Region of Texas, per capita, than anywhere else in the nation. The Southeast Texas Regional offices of MADD cover a 10 county geo-

graphical area that includes Ft. Bend, Wharton, Harris, Brazoria, Montgomery and other counties.

Recent statistics for Ft. Bend include that in 2009 there were 16 fatalities representing 37 percent of all traffic fatalities, and Texas Department of Transportation reports in 2010 there were 20 fatalities and 214 injuries due to drunk driving. “This rep-resents 62.5 percent of motor vehicle fatalities in our commu-

nity”, says Dave Anderson, of MADD Southeast Texas Region and a resident of Sugar Land. Anderson continues, “ we have some of the most effective and passionate law enforcement per-sonnel in Ft. Bend County and due to their persistent awareness and arrests we, as residents, are safer but the numbers are still off the charts.”

Because of the high risk to the public of Ft. Bend County, MADD has begun an Action Group that focuses on Ft. Bend County and is made up of vol-unteer citizens of our county. The first meeting of the Action Group was held last Thursday,

September 29, at the Missouri City Public Safety Building, in Missouri City. “There is a need for more citizens to stand up against this violent crime against our chil-dren as they get off a school bus, and all of us as we travel and go about our daily lives. Please help us help law enforcement stop drunk driving in our community,” Anderson added.

The next Community Action meeting will be held on October 20, at 6:30 p.m. For more infor-mation or to attend please call Dave Anderson at Mothers Against Drunk Driving 281-590-2222 or email him at [email protected].

The meeting will be an open-house format in the Commons Area.

Project team members and rep-resentatives from Missouri City, Fort Bend County and METRO will be present to discuss the proj-ect and address questions from residents.

Those who require special communications or accommoda-tions are encouraged to contact the Fort Bend County Public Transportation Department at 281-243-6706 at least two work-ing days prior to the meeting.

Residents may also submit written comments at the meet-ing or address them to the Transit Director, Fort Bend County Public Transportation Department, 12550 Emily Court, Suite 400, Sugar Land, Texas 77478. Comments may also be submitted by email to [email protected]. Written com-ments must be postmarked or

Recognized District showing 75 percent of the schools classified as Recognized or Exemplary.

Dr. Randle proudly said LCISD improved from being ranked 74th in 2004 to 10th in 2010 on the Educational Performance Index.

With Project Lead the Way undergoing its second year in all the district’s high schools, the program is for students interested in engi-neering careers, said Dr. Randle. LCISD high schools will be work-ing on having program campuses nationally certified for students to earn college credits. This year, a total of 435 students are enrolled in the engineering study program as compared to last year’s total of 329 students.

But, not unlike the school dis-tricts across the state, LCISD, too, has responded to budget reductions from the 82nd Legislature, when

Murder suspect calls 911-- confesses

Reportedly, that call provided all the suspect information the police needed; the caller told the 911 operator he had shot a man and wanted to turn himself in.

The man who called police and reported himself to be the shooter has been identified as 26 year old Omar Jorge Ramos of Richmond. According to Neinast, Ramos told police that he and the victim, Jeremy Aaron Ramirez, 23, also of Richmond, had been involved in an a distur-bance earlier in the evening at a business on Collins Road, also located in Richmond. Police had responded to that incident but as no crime had been committed, they separated the two and sent

be $75, and for bulky waste service greater than five cubic yards, that requires a call for both the request and to determine pricing. It’s also a good idea to find out what is allowed to be hauled off.

Although the new automated program begins in December, the city advises residents to start using the carts as soon as they are received.

For those who did not attend the educational sessions held by the city about the new program, here’s how to use them. Place the carts at

them on their way. Neinast said the exchange between the two was over a woman. Ramirez is believed to have left the Collins Road incident and gone to the apartments on Rocky Falls.

“Shortly after 8:30 pm, Ramos showed up at the apartment Ramirez was visiting, forced his way past the female resident of the apartment, and shot Ramirez multiple times,” said Neinast. Before police could arrive at the shooting scene, Ramos left and returned to his home, then called to surrender himself. Neinast said Omar Jorge Ramos was arrested without incident and charged with Murder, a First Degree Felony.

He was transported to the Fort Bend County Jail where he is being held on bond.

the state adopted its budget. There were massive educational cuts and LCISD adjusted staffing guidelines and absorbed 117 teaching posi-tions and 21 paraprofessionals, accomplished with “no staff lay-offs,” said Dr. Randle. The dis-trict’s 2011-12 adopted budget totals $181,440,070. The district receives education jobs grant funds amount-ing to $3.98 million and another $500,000 in federal grant funds. For the upcoming 2012-13 year, LCISD expects to see a reduction of $16.8 million “and for the first time, there will be no funding for growth,” said Dr. Randle, and that will happen alongside the addition of more than 80,000 students across the state with about 850 new ones going to LCISD.

Meetings earlier this year of a citizens’ bond committee comprised of 41 community members, school principals and assistant principals, and one student were held before the

school term ended this past spring, advised Dr. Randle. The committee recommended a bond referendum for the school’s future plans fol-lowed by the call for an election by the school board. In 2006, voters approved a $281 million bond pack-age for the school district.

Dr. Randle said that the bond referendum on the ballot this November is for $249.2 million and it includes the construction of five new campuses, one near Fulshear; a bus barn, a natatorium, building renovations, property purchases for future schools, and new computers and other technology upgrades.

Recently, the LCISD board met to discuss priorities and planning for the district. It is reported that of significant importance, the dis-trict intends to prepare itself for the expected growth in student enroll-ment projected to be up to 1,000 students per year for the next 10 years. The projected growth is tied

to the projects in the $249 million bond referendum and considered to be part of the school district's 10-year facilities plan.

Data cited by Dr. Randle when he addressed participants at the state of the schools presentation host-ed by the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce included the total num-ber of school buses operated by the district, 265, that transport 11,570 students on 466 bus routes, some

In addition to reimbursing hom-eowners, the judgment against the roofing company will require it to pay $25,000 in civil penalties and

Giselle has been training in taekwondo since age 4. She start-ed competing and won her first gold medal at the age of 5.

She has been a member of the Young Brothers Taekwondo G-Force competition team since 2009. Giselle trains at Young Brothers Taekwondo in Houston, under her father Master Mark Giambi, 8th Dan and is coached by her older brother Gianni Giambi, 3rd Dan.
