George Harqrave was born in Crossville, Illinois, and lived there until
joining the U.S. Marines when he graduated from high school. Upon
his discharge from military service in 1964, George moved to Midland.
Margaret was born in Brownfield, Texas, but when she was four years
old the Pace family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. She stayed in
Carlsbad for a year after completing high school, then moved to
Midland in September, 1963. George and Margaret were introduced by a mutual friend in August, 1964, and
six months later they married. Margaret grew up attending the Church of Christ. George, who came from a
Baptist background, was baptized at the North “A” congregation in 1974.
George’s first job in Midland was with Drilco Oil Tools, and he worked there for twenty-one years. While
working for Drilco, he also was a “part time” farmer, harvesting the first bale of cotton ginned in Midland in
1979. After leaving Drilco, George was self-employed in trucking and pipe inspection. Later he worked for
Harmon’s Machine and for Lone Star Transportation. While working with Drilco and Harmon’s he traveled
throughout the U.S. and visited Canada, Australia, and South America. George is now retired – no more
trucking, raising cattle, or farming.
Between graduating from high school and moving to Midland, Margaret worked one year in Carlsbad as
a long distance operator for General Telephone. This was the day when a person might dial “O” and an
operator would place a call for you. Her first full time job in Midland was with Sun Oil Company as a scouting
clerk in the land department, typing drilling reports. On occasion she also took dictation if the boss’s secretary
was not in the office. After seven years she went to work for Automated Financial Systems. Margaret then
went to work in the accounting department of Rutter and Wilbanks Corporation. This was her final job before
retiring.
The Hargraves have two daughters, Staci and Kristi. The Hargrave family enjoyed camping and have many
good memories of vacations in the mountains of Colorado. Staci and her husband, Alan Kilgore, live in
Midland, while Kristi and her husband, Steve Claybaugh, live in Lubbock. George and Margaret are
grandparents to four granddaughters and are great-grandparents to a great grandson and two great
granddaughters. They count it a blessing to be a part of God’s family at the Downtown congregation.
