FROM THE PASTOR

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. It has been part of our spiritual life that we cling to Mary in all the days of our life. St. John Paul II always used the phrase “to Jesus through Mary” to summarize Mary’s role in our life. She is our mother and the mother of our Savior Jesus Christ. To celebrate the Month of the Rosary, we will pray the rosary before all the Masses for the entire month of October. The Legion of Mary will lead us in the rosary before every Mass. Last weekend we returned back to the Church for our Sunday worship and it was good to be back home. We can now worship the Lord in this holy place again. Although there is still some work to be done in the Confessional and Minister’s Room, we can slowly return back to our regular worship inside the Church. At this moment we are just waiting for the installation of the floors in both rooms. Volunteers are so generous to offer their services to finish

these projects free of charge. As you can see, all of the concrete and asphalt has now been poured for our new Front Entrance. This was the largest aspect of this project. The last and final work will be the installation of the roof for the new shade structure over the front doors, new lighting, irrigation, and landscaping. The landscaping will be done by our Hispanic community. The parish will provide the materials. I ask you to please consider sponsoring one of the items that that were listed in last week’s bulletin insert. If you need a list, please call Angie at the parish office or see the list on the inside page of the bulletin. These items can be donated in memory of loved one or in honor of someone or a special occasion. After all this construction is finished, we will have a beautiful front entrance to ease our access to the Church. Whatever success and beauty we will have, we offer it to the glory of God’s name.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (All for the glory of God!)

WEEKLY NEWS

SUNDAY EUCHARIST

The Ambry: The word ambry is derived from the Latin armarium (cupboard or chest) and signifies the place where the vessels of oil used in celebrating sacraments are kept. These oils are blessed by the bishop at the Mass of Chrism celebrated during Holy Week and are brought to each parish church for the various rites of anointing. The three oils signify the universal charisms of the church for initiating (oil of catechumens), healing (oil of the sick) and consecrating (chrism). As early as the sixth century, ambries were used to hold consecrated communion bread as well as the oils, and were often located in the base of the altar. By the thirteenth century, separate locked ambries were used for the eucharist only. This was an accepted practice by the sixteenth century, when this separate container was called a tabernacle. In the meantime, smaller amounts of the oils were stored in the sacristy, or in a simple wall niche or recessed cupboard known as an ambry, usually located near the baptism font. As with all other vessels used in the liturgy today, the vessels for the oils should be of a quality and design that speak of the importance of the ritual actions. The vessels should hold an ample supply of the oils, thus symbolizing the generosity of God’s gift. The gestures of anointing can then be performed with similar generosity of touch. The display of beautiful vessels reminds the community of the reverence it gives to its members as they are welcomed in baptism, confirmed in the spirit and anointed in their illness. To be anointed is to participate in an ancient biblical and ecclesial rite of blessing, and to enter into the mission of Jesus Christ, the anointed one of God.

BIBLE STUDY

Our Sacred Heart Bible Study meets every Tuesday

morning at 9am in the Bible Study Room in the Parish

Center. Everyone is welcome to attend.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

This year our parish will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on the weekend of October 13th & 14th. The theme this year is "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

A Prayer for Catechists Loving God, Creator of all things,

you call us to be in relationship with you and others. Thank you for calling me to be a catechist,

for the opportunity to share with others what you have given to me.

May all those with whom I share the gift of faith discover how you are present in all things.

May they come to know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

May the grace of the Holy Spirit guide my heart and lips, so that I may remain constant in loving

and praising you. May I be a witness to the Gospel and

a minister of your truth. May all my words and actions reflect your love. Amen.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

People can spend their entire lives looking for their most suitable partner. Some have an unattainable ideal in their minds that makes the search impossible. Others may choose a different partner over and over again without any real discernment, leading to a long series of breakups and heartache. Perhaps the greatest obstacle for people lies in their assumption that the most important criteria for choosing a partner is that the person they choose to love needs to be devoted to them and be faithful to them above all others. The truth is that if you want to have a suitable partner who you find yourself drawing ever closer to as the years go by, then the focus of both people involved needs to be on a much more important being than the two of you. When I was a teenager, I remember seeing a triangle used as a visual aid in explaining how true love works. God is the top point and the two lovers, friends, or family members involved are the bottom points. If the two involved in the relationship love God more than each other, than in time it will be their love for the Divine that will bring them ever closer, like how a triangle narrows at the top point. The more I give of myself to my God, the greater I find my love is for my wife, my children, and my friends. A stewardship way of life will eventually strengthen all our relationships, for a surrender to the One who is love means an increase in the love we have to give to others. For those who continue to search for the “one,” pause, pay attention, and see the One who has always loved you and will do so forevermore. —Tracy Welliver, MTS

GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR OCTOBER 7TH

“Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We’re reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus’ response goes further back then the Mosaic law. “From the beginning, God made them male and female and the two shall become one flesh, and what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We’re quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today’s Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today—now!—by grace. Indeed, “the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

For Children: When you make a promise, why is it important to keep it? For Youth: What has your family taught you about God and living a faithful life? How do you show your family what they mean to you? For Adults: How is God’s fidelity reflected in human marriage? To whom are you committed like this?
