Dress the part. You don’t have to channel your inner Bear Grylls or Lara Croft, but nothing will kill your joy quicker than ill-fitting shoes, too-tight or ill-fitting clothing and being either too hot or too cold.

Less is more. Jeans may be

your go-to item, but lighter, breathable fabrics might be a better option. You’ll thank us when the mid-day sun starts melting your thighs and you’re sweating puddles into your takkies.

But cover up. Unless you’re heading to the beach, think

You don’t have to super fit or athletic to get the most out of a healthy, outdoorsy lifestyle. Simply lace up your walking shoe and head outside to discover some of East London’s spectacular natural treasures.Whether you’re heading out on a formal trail like the Dassie in the Nahoon Estuary or a casual ramble along any

of our beautiful beaches or resorts, hiking is one of the best – and cheapest! – ways to distress and recharage.It’s also a great way to get your techno-addict kids off the coach or away from the screen and for families to spend time together.Here are some tips to get you started if you’re new to the call of the wild.

Take a hike!

Top tips for taking to the Trails –

... and enjoying it!

Page 13: October eWhat's On

carefully about opting for shorts. This is malaria-free country, but nothing spoils a memory quite like having to pick ticks off your significant other. And slather on the sunscreen. You really can’t overdo it on the sunscreen.

Don’t get lost. This may seem obvious but doing even just a little bit of homework and getting a good map to familiarise yourself with the terrain can be the different between an enjoyable experience and brand new hiking boots that get stuffed into the back of the cupboard

never to see the light of day again.

Start small. If you’re new to hiking or if you have younger children, don’t get over-ambitious by diving straight into day-long tests of endurance. East London has great options for short, manageable walks. Start small and work your way up.

Water. You’re going to get thirsty, even on the coolest day. Go light on the snacks but don’t skimp on the water. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate ….

And finally … be safe.

FANCY flicking a Frisbee and making friends at the same time?

East London’s Ultimate Frisbee (ELUF) is just the ticket to get fit, make friends and have fun. Fris-bee enthusiast and club member Nic Labuschagne said the club has been going for almost five years in East London and is around 50 members strong.

The members range in age from school children to adults. Each team must have at least three women on the field at any given time.

They play at Old Boys in Selborne on Wednesday nights and on Sun-day afternoons at Nahoon Beach. The beach option is best for begin-ners or those just wishing to try the sport, Labuschagne advises, adding that anyone is welcome to come down and have a look.

Labuschagne described Ultimate Frisbee as a mix between netball and American Football.

You can’t run with the frisbee or make contact with the person holding the Frisbee, like in net-ball. You get it by intercepting the Frisbee or passing it to someone on your team. The field is marked out as the length of a rugby field and about half the width (100m x

37m). It is like American Football in the sense that you have to catch the Frisbee in the “end zone” in order to score. If the Frisbee is thrown into the zone without be-ing caught, it goes back into play.

The teams of 10 are mixed – there must be at least three women on the field at any given time. Sub-stitutions are allowed. The game is played until a team scores 15 points, up to a maximum of 90 minutes.

Matches are played in pretty much any weather, including in the rain, although if it is very windy games are cancelled.

“Ultimate Frisbee is great if you are wanting a run around with lots of action and lots of energy, but you don’t want broken bones or to be tackled. It’s totally differ-ent to more mainstream sports,” Labuschagne said. “It’s a great sport to play, the vibe is really chilled. The games are self-ref-ereed and the people are very friendly.”

Book Review & giveAwAy

The What’s On

Whether or not you have ever heard of - or per-haps considered walking - the pilgrim route to Santia-go de Compostela in Spain, you will most definitely be intrigued and entertained by Dieter Daehnke’s book, “Journey of a Stickman”. the book is an honest ac-count of Daehnke’s daily experiences, blended with an easy-to-understand his-tory of this pilgrimage. Daehnke walked a section of the 800km route on two different occasions, once during the summer and once in winter.

the way in which he re-counts his travels really pulls you in. It is so well-described that it had the effect of making me feel I was literally on the journey with him. As he reflects on humanity and life in gen-eral during his many hours spent walking the route, it made me reflect on my own daily life and inspired me to consider how I might push my own limits just a little. Anyone with an interest in history would delight in this book, but the light-hearted manner in which it is written will ensure that it can be enjoyed even by the person who routinely fell asleep in history class.

61 DYNAMIC EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES 043 726 2225

You never know when one day you may need a blood transfusion. Accidents

happen so quickly. Or perhaps you may not need blood but your grandmother will, or your newborn baby nephew, or your best friend. A unit of blood can save up to three lives, and it is often vulnerable patients like babies or cancer sufferers who benefit the most.Being scared of the needle is natural, but in overcoming that fear and donating regularly you can enjoy the satisfaction that comes from being a part of the group of South Africans who sup-port the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the vital service they provide.There is always a high demand for blood, and this need spikes periodically – for example over festive weekends when there is a higher incidence of accidents on our roads, or over holidays when regular donors may be away. The more South African who make a commitment to donate “safe” blood, the better.Who can donate? This is the criteria:• You must weigh at least 50kg;

• Be between 16 and 65 years of age;

• Be in good health; • Lead a sexually safe lifestyle;

and • Consider your blood safe for

transfusion.The donation process itself really doesn’t take a long time. A ques-tionnaire must be filled out, your iron levels are checked, and then you are hooked up to the needle and blood sack. Once the unit has been given, you are encouraged to relax a little and enjoy some juice and a biscuit to avoid light-headedness, before you can be on your merry way.In East London, blood donation can be given in between shop-ping at places like Retail Park, or at the SANBS building in Pearce Street, Berea. Mobile units make their way to businesses, and are often set up in busy places, like Vincent Park Centre or at local festivals. Giving blood is the easiest way to be a hero. To find out more about giving blood in East London, con-tact Border Blood Bank PR Rene Vice on 043-704-8216 or [email protected].* Information
