· A four-man U.S. Army helicopter crew that experienced a terrifying midair encounter with a UFO has won a $5,000 award from The ENQUIRER's Blue-Ribbon Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects.

"It's an extraordinary exciting case which ,has posed a most impressive challenge to science," said the panel, which awarded the money to the crew for supplying the most scientifically valuable UFO evidence for 1973.

· The panel - composed of five leading scientists and educators - met in New Orleans April 20 to consider five claims, out of hundreds submitted to The ENQUIRER, for the $50,000 reward offered for the first positive proof of the existence of UFOs.

The panel members ·agreed unani

mously that none of the claims merited the $50,000 award, but all voted in favor of giving $5,000 to the helicopter crew for their· UFO experience.

Panel member Dr. Frank Salisbury, professor of plant sciences at Utah State University, explained: "The only thing that holds us back from. awarding the $50,000 prize is that although this is one of the strongest sightings we've come across, it is purely a witness sighting without tangible evidence, such as photographs."

The bizarre incident occurred on the 'night of Oct. 18', 1973 - a bout 50 miles south of Cleveland. Major Larry Coyne, the helicopter pilot, was shaken up by

- the appearance of a UFO. "The UFO was dangerously close," Coyne said.

In the December 16 issue of The ENQUIRER, they described the UFO as a 60-foot-long cigar-shaped, metal-

lie gray object with a dome on top, and said it hovered over the helicopter for a few seconds.

At the moment the UFO had swooped overhead, the helicopter was at an altitude of 1,500 feet and going down. But when the UFO vanished seconds later, the chopper was at 3,800 feet. Such a rate of ascent is impossible for a helicopter that takes a full minute to climb 2,000 feet under maximum power.

The Army has taken an uncharacteristic interest in this incident:

"We have no reason to doubt the truthfulness of Major Coyne's report," admitted Lt. Col. Andrew Sullivan, Army spokesman at the Pentagon in Washjngton. "Major Coyne and his crew were the people closest to the object and they have reported their findings to us. The incident is described in our records as 'the sighting of an unidentified flying object."

Panel member Dr .. James Harder, professor of engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, said: "I can't find any holes in their story."

Added panelist Dr. Robert Creegan, professor of philosophy at State University of New York in Albany: "Their instruments confirm that they encountered this strange phenomena. I think it is one of the most challenging cases. to science 'that I have ever seen."

The caliber of. witnesses "is above reproach," said panelist Dr. R. Leo Sprinkle, associate professor of psychology at the University of Wyoming.

Panel member Dr. J. Allen Hynek, chairman of the Dept. of Astronomy at Norhwestern University, said: "It's utterly out of the question that they would endanger their careers and pensions by falsifying this encounter."

Saying.·· UFO'S IN NORTH CAROLINA? Well, SOMETHING.

James Barringer, a photographer for the Sailsbury Evening Post, got a call last Christmas season regarding some "strange · flashing lights" from one of their subscribers in nearby Dukeville section.

He was anxious to see what the subscriber, Terry Hinceman, reported seeing, manned his cameras and drove to the Hinceman residence about 7 P.M. There tey were.

"I could see the lights flash ing without glasses," Barringer said. "There were a couple of bright lights, like large stars, low on the horizon. They appeared to be standing still. .

"Looking at the objects through field glasses, they were most definitely red, blue and white flashing lights. They seemed to stay stationary in the sky for a long period of time.

"They had more of a yellow tone than the bright white light of a star," Barringer said.

He called a couple of airports, though the lights didn't move at a regular rate as planes do, but was told there were no flights in the area.

He called the NC State Highway Patrol, was told such reports were common , but his "sighting would be reported to the FAA."

He called Dr. Martin Shotzberger, President of Catawba Col)ege. He wanted to take a picture of what he saw, but the

· objects were too far away for his cameras. Maybe through those big telescopes at the Catawba. Observatory. . . ?

Dr. Shotzberger wanted to help, but the people responsible for the observatory were on vacation or out of town. Barringer went home. The lights were still there. He called neighbors, they could see them, too - FOR SEVERAL HOURS.

A call to Barringer at XCN press time gave no clue to the UFO's, but he told XCNews there were several sightings last week, when the ·object was close enough to make an image. It was round, those same flashing lights, and when it flew away, "made a noise like a jet, but we don't have any jets around here," he said. Sorry, Barringer still doesn't have a picture of what's in the North Carolina skies.

Comingfrom near the horse's mouth from a reliable source I ha been advised that Gray Barker, the publisher and writer of the Saucerian Press of wt Virginia is about to call it quits. Known in the UFO field for some twenty years he has contributed much with his writing ability as well as giving lectures.

Barry Goldwater, a staunch conservative Senator from the state of Arizona, has become a board member_of the National Investigation Committee On Aerial Phenomena. The good Senator has served as a Major General in the Air Force Reserve and has confided that he does believe our planet Earth has been visited by creatures from outer space and that our planet is not the only one with intelligent life. Let us say Amen to the Senator' wise remarks.c

UNIVERSAL FAITH AND WISDOM ASSOCIATION BUILDS BASE

STAR ROUTE- TONOPAH, ARIZONA 85354

These three saucer shaped buildings are the unusual start of a space colony in the Ari%0na desert.

This is the age of Spirit and Space, of change, growth, and advancement. 01 d things have passed away. Behold, all is becoming new. The good people among us want to know the truth about things here and hereafter. They want a world of righteous I iving, of peace, security, prosperity, with a chance to I ive constructively, free from the slavery of war and conscription, murder, crime and the handicaps of evil habits. Many are coming to realize that all the strength and force of a person comes from God, from faith in things unseen.

We are here in our Universal Faith and Wisdom Association, Inc. to help people to realize these ideals. We I ive and work at present on 65 acres of fertile desert land that with water wi II grow practically anything. We have two water systems. Students could raise at least part of their own food. Beauty surrounds us with magnificent turquoise-colored

mountains, and daily we are almost always sun-kissed, and with evening sunsets that are out of this world for

loveliness.

We are a part of the Western Section of the Kingdom of God, so predicted by the late Edgar Cayce, the ''Sleeping Prophet,'' ''The Miracle Man of Virginia Beach," "The Greatest Mystic of the Present Century, '' and a special friend of the writer. This great genius has promised I ater to read the etheri c or Akashic records of those who are interested in such. This will be a great privilege 1nd will change the lives of many, as it did with us, who knew him so well and learned so much from him .

The first building completed under the direction of space people. Note that the conformation of this dome (Saturn type) varies from the domes in the photo on the previous page.

We have plenty of the necessities of space and fresh air, free from radioactivity and the poisonous gasoline fumes of the cities. Our pioneer Institution of Spirit, Space, and Practical Learning is located in the lovely progressive state of Arizona. Our motto is Light More Light. We are nonprofit, rei igious, nonsectarian, coeducational, eclectic, research, and with special emphasis on the eternal union of Knowledge and Spirituat Development. We serve the whole person - mind, body and spirit. The fulfillment of this statement can make a new world for us of righteousness, health, peace, prosperity, safety, plenty and of God-consciousness. Th!s can be accomplished with the help of Deity, the Space People, and our own hard and constant work.

Full attention wi II be given, not only to practical learning - things of the physical world, but to Extrasensory Perception, and to the Universal and Bib I i cal " Gifts of the Spirit" that St. Paul would not have us ignorant of. Also we give ourselves to the rectifying

9

of perhaps the greatest educational and spiritual crime of the Earth planet, and that is remaining silent as to all teaching of what follows so-called death, and the other side of I ife. We send our children and adults in ignorance in another world and type of I iving witho. any preparation, often through lack of training and knowledge, to wander, confused and bewildered, perhaps for all eternity, in some cases, in '• the outer darkness' • that the Lord Jesus Christ tells of. Those ministering angels spiritual beings of whom in Psalm 91 the Lord says ''He wi II give His angels charge over thee, • • are disregarded and thought of as being dead in graves waiting a final judgement. Also, those even brought up in orthodoxy have the curtain drawn over the passing and what obtains on the other' side of I ife and are consigned to graves to rot unt i I a supposed fi na I judgement - all this when there is no death anywhere in a II of God' s un iverse - a fact proved by our greatest rei igionists, scientists and researchers, and by the return of innumerable people well-known to Earth in the Bible and elsewhere. People live and work on the other side, beyond the grave, almost immediately. Among those returned in

the Bible was Elijah and Moses that talked to Jesus about His decease on the Mount of Transfiguration. Samuel returned to talk with King Saul about matters immediately to take place, and munerous others that have communicated after their passing to Spirit, to the world beyond so-called death. More recent communications, and those of the present time have been investigated and proved true by our greatest top scientists, investigators world-known, such as Sir 01 iver Lodge, Sir Wm. Crookes, Sir Wi II iam Barrett, Alfred Russell Wallace, Doctors F. W. H. Myers, Crawford, Geley, Flammarion, Lombroso, Richet, Schrenck-Notsing, Zollner, and others too numerous to mention of various nations.

Our Associc:.tion does not attempt to do the work of the Government schools. We are remedial and supplementary, fi II ing the gaps in between the 01 d and the New Age education.

Since we are a pioneer Space colony, among other things, and predicted to grow not only into a great city, but into an Empire, we should say a word about our Space friends. They tell us the

Page 6: October I 1974 ENQUIRER AWARDS $5,000 TO UFO WITNESS ))noufors.com/Documents/Books, Manuals and Published Papers/Spec… · in this issue ... -----VOL. XXXX No. 5. Oetober, 197 4

writer is one of the first three they contacted when they returned to Earth in the 40's to prepare the tenth of the population that is to be salvaged in times of destruction, to start the New Age and a New Wor'ld. It was natural that they should come to one of their own Venusian volunteers on this Earth and disclose their plans, which for some years unti I others also knew had to be kept secret. The Association is being built under their instructions, round buildings, domed, in white or pastel shades. At present we are in need of a dormitory and its furnishings, a cafeteria, dining room, kitchen with its equi-pnent, extra cottages or motels for visitors, also .equipment for recreational grounds, and more 1and for farming purposes, with the enlargement of our water systems; These are a few of our needs, as the Association grows. We expect those interested will supply gifts, leave their Wills to us, and possibfy some will desire to come and live among us, in this predicted safe place, when the tribulations and cataclysms increase. Already we have a large number of fruit and nut trees growing with grapevines and shrubs, with some vegetable gardeos against the days of shortage of food and water.

Out nere in the open desert we have many Space contacts. There are some ten million Venusian spacecraft surrounding our Earth under the Christian Commander Ashtar, whose • • A• • is sometimes seen in the skies, and other times in the desert sands. We have spoken with Ashtar many times, and almost nightly see some of his ships over by the Cal ifomia border or in the skies. Numerous people from various states have crossed the continent to see them, to talk with the writer, and to borrow some of the 6,000 volu mes in our free lending I ibrary concerning Space and Spirit. People are building: up around us, -and the new Highway Ten is within a stone's throw.

Not all the Space ships are from Venus, for their are a few from Juoiter, Saturn, and Mars. The Space People wi I I often prove themselves on request by changing Colors, lighting up, blacking out, moving

themselves from one place to another and placing themselves by a certain requested ship to answer a question

with this sign. In the past they have on occasion made a figure eight in the sky and repeated the sign on request. We

have seen Mother Space ships that fi II the horizon at near view, as in Florida, and we have seen, some of us and described, a beautiful, luminous female captain of a small ship that came into the Little Chapel in the Woods to speak with Brother Ernest Kapp, of Butler, Pennsylvania. Many of us have made

visits to Buck Nelson in the days of great persecution, because he had made a trip in the flesh to Mars, the Moon, and Venus and his pension was taken

away. We did what we could to help.

The neighbors knew he told the truth about his Spaceship trip, as much of the world now knows from his conventions yearly, and his lectures in Washington, D. C., and in numerous other places.

Founder and indefatigable educator Rev. Enid S. Smith, Ph.D., stands at entrance to the Universal Faith and Wisdom Association grounds in the Arizona desert.

Those who wish to study and become a part of us, must present a certificate of health from a reputable physician. There must be no communicable dis-eases. Students should be interested in Spirit and Space, in the new education and its new methods, be willing to study and work, grow and improve. For the first time in history, as far as we know, there has been a revolt against the present system of education and its methods. This may be because of the failure of education to meet modern needs with practical knowledge and efficiency. Students are tired of im-practical learning, crams, exams, costly expenses, sacrifices, waste of

10

time and effort with little or nothing to be gained or retained.

Research indicates that in some areas of learning there can be a 1 00% benefit - and this is where largely the emphasis should be placed - in such areas as rei igion, mental development in practical considerations, such as abi I ity to reason, to find new facts for oneself, to think freely and independently, to use the library constructively, to follow directions, to develop a suitable personality, and build a worth while character, with the qualities of promptness, perservance, courage, hon-esty, faith, enthusiasm, consideration of others, courtesy, humility, and with the I ike, to work and improve oneself and others, and to he I p build a good world, Christ-conscious, putting God first, others second, and self last. The curriculum wi II consist of many of the following subjects, dependent on the number of applicants of study and on teacher availability:

Remedial Eng I ish, Speech, Sermon and Lecture Preparation, Creative Writing

They hover over atomic research stations

and military bases, farms and isolated areas.

They have buzzed aircraft, paced automo

biles, and dived into the sea. The U.S. Air

Force has studied them; astronauts have

seen and photographed them.

Why, then, do we try to explain away the

existence of flying saucers with theories of

mass hallucination and suggestion? Can't

our scientists explain these paranormal visi

tations? Is there a connection between the

Sky People and the psychic world? What

can history tell us about the UFO's?

In Mysterious Visitors an internationally

respected "ufologist" presents a possible

solution to the UFO enigma and comes to

grips with some of the mysteries surround

ing the subject. With new interpretations of

the classic sightings of flying saucers and a

. great deal of original material to add, the

author delves into the question of the origins

of UFO's: are they from other planets in

our own galaxy? Or could they be from

other space-time continuums-invisible uni

verses intersecting our own? He offers some

new explanations for the riddles of the ages,

from biblical times to the present, nd gives

the reader a glimpse of future contacts with

the Sky People. One of his most fascinating

sections offers a new, extra-terrestrial ex

planation of the mysteries of Western

religions.

Brinsley Le Poer Trench is the chairman

of Contact, the world's largest UFO

watching organization. Mysterious Visitors is his sixth book.

The Eternal Subject-the continuing saga of the flying

saucers-is now reaching a momentous stage. There are signs

that we are near a denouement. There is a saying that truth is stranger than fiction. When

all the facts are known about the mysterious and elusive UFOs, this statement will be more than verified.

The UFO Experience A Scientific Inquiry J. Allen Hynek

Officially, the scientific world, thrugh the

publication of the Condon Report, and the U.S. government, through the closing of the Project Blue Book files, have put an end to speculation about Unidentified Flying Objects. Officially, UFOs don't exist.

Yet the evidence used to dismiss the UFO phenomenon by the Condon Committee is scanty in the extreme. Fewer than 100 cases were considered. and even that sample was scarcely random-selected. Many of the scientists assembled to pass on the authenticity or otherwise of UFOs at the University of Colorado brought with them negative preconceptionshardly the open minds of scientists.

Dr. Hynek was throughout its existence the official astronomical consultant to the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book. He is currently the Director of the linheimer Astronomical Research Center at Northwestern University and Chairman of Northwestern's Astronomy Department. He has served as associate director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition, Dr. Hynek served with NASA as head of its satellite tracking program.

With such credentials and experience, Dr. Hynek does not lightly challenge the official UFO line. But he shows, conclusively, that the case against UFOs has not been proved by the Condon Committee or by anybody else. A residue of reports remains after even the slightly questionable as well as the obviously mistaken and totally erroneous ones have been culled. The cases Dr.' Hynek cites raise questions that have never been answered.

The Editor

Dear Sir: My day is •ade when I get the Flying Saucer

News in the mailo I have gleaned quite a bit of U F 0

prQhecy from a tatholic book publisher, and strongly

doubt that we ar8!1'in any danger of being harmed by

15.

themo According to my epace chart, Halley's Co•et

is to return by 1986 and will pass Uranus in 1979o

As you may know, its fiery tail is extremely long and

wide- rangedo Who can escape it? That is the questiono

Will it bring death? We study the Bible and find

Saints Paul and Peter's warning that in the last days

of this age the skies will be set afire and the very

elements man depends upon for life will be destroyed

by the deadly radio-active rays of a comet?

1 maintain that no one is in any danger of

being harmed by UFO occupants- unless firstly being

fired upono They are here trying to alert us to the

alarming truth that the heavens are ging to aelted

a way with a loud rumbling, as the comet approaches.

If people would unerstand, and believe that they

are here to preserve us- take us up- when it comes,

and look upon the• as our rescuers, then can we

escape ito believe this is why they are observing

us Who shall be chosen? They have tried in vain to

make contact, but no one responds Sincerely,

The Editor Dear Jimmy:

Here is a quisk summery of what happ ened at the convent ion. The 5th annual MUFON symposium was held at Cascade Holiday I nn in Akron, Ohio 6-22-74 The featured speakers were ·Walt Andrus, Ralph Blum, Barry Downing, Ted Phillips, Bert and Marjie Fish and Stan Friedaan. Each gave an over all talk on their speciality in the UFO field. The sympo-sium lasted around ten hours with breaks given. The convention was very humorous at tiaes with Ralph Blum and Earl Neff supplying the jokes but over all it was a great convention and I hope the next year can •atch it.

Sincerely

Mark Swift

The Editor Dear Sir:

f h. h I th The UFO Research Group o w 1e am e Acting- Director, has concluded that 95% of

.all re

ported UFOs aren't hostile, only 5 % are (1 1n 20).

Some little known reports in my files: 10-19- 74 Harrodsburg, Ky. - Ky. Army National Guard pilot Richard C. Halverson, his co-pilot,and two other pilots in the are sighted UFO. I t was a blue-green light in the night-time sky seen from three seperate helicopters. UFO was not tracked on radar, according to Bluegrass Field. Official explanation is planet Jupiter, But Halverson, a pilot for 18 years and holder of 6000 hours of flying time, doesn' 'buy ·that ''. Halverson wrote in an article for the ' ' Louisville Times '' of which he is a staff writer.

10-15and 16th 1974 Munfordville, Ky. Mayor Jim Berry and hundreds of citizens saw ' ' amazingly fast'' UFOs. The Munfordville Civil Defense Director has notified the proper military authorities about the incident.

I n mid-September, the three Skylab 11 astronauts sighted a '' Mysterious reddish object'' approach to within eo to 30 to 50 miles of their space-ship. Donald w. Krider, Jr. UFORG

THE BOOK OF THE SACRED MAGIC OF ABRA-MELIN THE MAGE translated by S. L. Mac GREGOR-MATHERS

This remarkable book is a translation of one of the 8000 manuscripts in the Bibliotheque de (Arsenal in Paris, and appears to be one of the purest systems of occultism and magic extant. The author, who was a contemporary of Nicolas Flame!, Pernelle and Christian Rosenkreutz, the founder of the famous Rosicrucian Order, put down in this volume the findings of a lifetime devoted to esoteric pursuits. Writing in order that his discoveries might not be lt. probably, he dedicated the book to his son. ·He attributes his great fund of knowledge to an Egyptian Mage, Abra-lvt elin, whom he met by chance. This meeting he considered the successful culmination of extensive wanderings in search of the Light of Initiated Wisdom.

· The manuscript in the Bibliotheque de (Arsenal is written.

in an eighteenth century hand, in French, and the title page indicates that it is a translation from the Hebrew original of 1458 by Abraham the jew. The'present translator has done an excellent job of putting the French translation into readable English. Long out of print, the publishers believe this book comes as a support to faith and an aid to discrimination in discerning true and false recondite systems, as well as offering instructions which the author affirms to huve followed with success.

THE GREATER KEY OF SOLOMON by S. L. Mac GREGOR-MATHERS

This book contains an unexcelled collection of cabalistic conjurations- and pentacles. Edited and adapted from several outstanding manuscripts in the British Museum"s monumental collection of occult incunabula, it is very handsomely gotten up, printed on coated paper and leather bound. Much more than a curiosity, it brings the student and the historian efficiently organized sources and readily accessible references.

The Works of L. W. de Laurence THE MASTER KEY

Concentration, efficient concentration, is an'' ability of paramount importance tP the modern mind, and of great popular interest. The fourth edition (and thirty-second printing) of T h e Master Key b y L . W . de Laurence, presented herewith, is open-sesame to a depository of untold mental riches.

From a strictly scientific standpoint, it is entirely reasonable and practical to believe that most of those agreeable and successful traits of character whose acquisition is so popular a pursuit today, result from the development of a very few primary faculties, and that of these, the capacity to concentrate is of the first importance. It is the author's thesis that this talent can be developed by definite exercises.

A Complete Course in Mental Development

Ramifications· of the elementary study of scientific concentration reach

into practically every department of mental phenomena. The A1aster Key contains thirty-five lessons of progressive difficulty and forty distinct exercises in which the various aspects of concentration and mental discipline are futly explained. There is abundant material provided for the student, material which will last him a-long time and keep his interest in the subject keen and alive.

Practical Assistance Theory is all very well in its place, but what the busy and practical person wants

is practical instruction in HOW to develop mental poise, decision of char.acter, the . p ower of disciplined inhibition, a good memory, and the capacity for exclusive attention and observation, for efficient study and for dignified public presence and

delivery. Of Universal Interest

There is no hocus-pocus in this book. It gives sound, scientific and practical tuition, and it adheres· to a common sense attitude in all practical applications. The Table of Contents is too long to include here, but it shows such attractive titles as: Logical Thinking and Ethical Order, The Hurry Habit, The Abolition oJ Worry, Interest, Habit, Will Culture, ·Personal Magnetism, Rational and Moral Education Ethically Directed, The Poverty Cure, etc., etc.

A Selling "Natural"

housanJs o copies o this book have been distributed in America and Europe, but 1ts sale contmues to mcrease. Presented in an attractive dust-jacket, and of digifie for_mat a manufacture,_. The Master Key has steadily and forthrightly mamtamed 1ts posttton as a splendtd, all-ro{md text on mental training, eminently useful in any department of life, and of amazing popular appeal.

Ever since the United States Air Force top brass issued this

order in 1948, American pilots have been mockingly defied

by the Unidentified Flying Objects that frequently invade

the air space of the United States ...

Why hasn't the Air Force authorized its pilots to shoot the

mysterious invaders down? Fear of extraterrestrial reprisal? Diplomatic protests from the "unknown" power that

possesses the biggest secret of our times?

Technological awe dictated by ignorance? Or, finally, deliberate deceit dictated by circumstances?

These questions are conclusively answered in this book-

which reveals how the idea of building airships of such un

usual structure was born, gives precise particulars about

who is building them, and establishes the place where they

take off on their flights, flights that concern the entire

world . . . $8.50 RENATO VESCO was born in Arona, Italy, in 1924. A

licensed pilot, in 1944 he commanded the technicl sec·

tion of the Italian Air Force. In 1946-47 he served 1n the

Reparto Tecnico Caccia. Mr. Vesco has been .a seior

member of the Italian Association of Aerotechn1cs s1nce

1943 and is a student of aeronautical problems, particu

larly in the field of jet propulsion. He is a contributor to

various aeronautical publications.
