A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast, and is the best method to detect cancer early. During the test, you will feel some pressure and maybe some discomfort, but it lasts less than one minute. If you are age 50 and over, getting a mammogram every 2 years is important. Talk to your doctor about when and where to get one. Also, routine checking of your own breasts can help catch cancer early. You may notice changes in your breasts that can alert your doctor. Learn how to do breast self-exams at http://women.webmd.com/healthtool-self-breast-exam or ask your doctor. With healthy lifestyle changes, breast self-exams and regular screenings, breast cancer can be prevented and found early. Cervical cancer can also be found early by getting a Pap test. Ask your doctor about your risk for breast and cervical cancer and ways to detect and prevent them. Mammograms Save Lives! Here are some tips to help prepare you for your mammogram: Get your test done the week after your period – your breasts are less tender during this time Wear a two-piece outfit Do not wear lotions or creams on your chest before the test Do not wear deodorants Take an over-the-counter pain killer one hour before the test to reduce any pain during the test
