BOOK REVIEWS Look closer ocean: An amazing window to our own world, by John Woodward, review by: Pengyue PYP 3, Illustrations by Pengyue PYP 3 The book is about ocean animals. My favorite animal is the jellyfish. My favorite part of the book is the tuna attack. I like how the tuna attacks. I don’t like the blue planet part because it is boring. I will recommend this book to second graders. One Lonely Little Seahorse, by: Joose Elffers, review by: Constantin PYP 1 This book is about vegetables. It is in the water. They are animals. It was a seahorse who had no friends and then it was some friends that supported him. My favorite part is with the banana dolphins. My least favorite part is the first page. I think second grade can read this book.

ANIMAL KINGDOM BLACK TAILED JACKRABBIT, by Mina PYP 4, Illustration - Etidal PYP 2 Black-tailed Jackrabbits are not actually rabbits but hares. Hares are born with fur and are larger than rabbits. They usually have taller hind legs and longer ears. These speedy animals are capable of running for 40 miles per hour (64 km). They have powerful hind legs

that can make them jump more than 10 feet (3 meters). They use these jumps and zigzag running to evade their predators including coyotes. Jackrabbits produce a lot of young called bunnies. Females give birth to several litters a year, each with one to six young. The young mature quickly and need little care from their mother. While the endangered status of most species is not so concerning, the jackrabbit is near threatened. Other species of Jackrabbits live in Mexico, the United States and Canada. FIGHTING FISH, by: Mina PYP 4, Illustrations: Emelie PYP 2 (left) Etidal PYP 2(right)

Fighting fish is a fish that likes to fight all kinds of fish, even Fighting Fish. Fighting Fish come from Japan. Fighting Fish should only get just three or four bits of food. They should get very little food but also very often.

HOW LONG HAVE MAMMALS BEEN ON EARTH? by: Lina Sofia PYP 3, Illustration: Lina Sofia PYP 3 Look at the time line. Can you see mammals to evolve on Earth? They appeared about 200 million years ago. The first mammals were probably tiny, about the same size as mice.

RECIPE

Flavoured Water, By Mari PYP 4

Do you sometimes think water is boring to drink because it has no taste? If so you should try this out. It only takes a second to turn plain jug of water into something much more exciting. Chunk in some handfuls of ice then try any one of these simple things: 1. Add a piece of lemon or lime. 2. Quarter a orange. Squeeze in the juice. Then toss in the squeezed quarters

Page 5: OCTOBER ISSUE - Trondheim International Schoolthis.no/wp-content/uploads/SchoolNewsletter-OctoberIssue...Y3, Lina Sofia Y3, Pengyue Y3, Mulima Y3, Mari Y4, Manya Y4, Mina Y4 MYP team:

for color and extra flavor. 3. Mush up a handful of strawberries or raspberries with a fork then add to the jug and stir through. 4. Scrunch a handful of fresh mint in your hands to get the flavor going then add that to the jug with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. If you feel a bit adventurous, add a slice of cucumber too. It might seem strange, but seriously refreshing.

SCIENCE & NATURE NEWS Later School Start, By Elinor MYP 8

Hundreds of students will participate in an

experiment run by Oxford University. They will

be seeing if later school start can improve exam

results.

Students from all over England will be a part of a

four year scientific program. There is evidence

that suggests teenagers are not completely awake

when school starts.

A small study in Monkseaton High School in

North Tyneside, done in 2009 showed that

starting an hour later enhanced the grades for main subjects. But after the principle left, and

they were appointed with a new one the school went back to early starts.

Now over 30,000 students will be invited to participate to start school later. They will be

increasing PE and modifying the gaps between each lesson, also adding brain training games

into the school day.

Professor Colin Epsie who will be leading the study said: “Your parents think it’s because

you’re lazy and opinionated and everything would be ok if you could get to sleep earlier. But

science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.

Teenager’s circadian rhythms – the cycle of sleep and wakefulness – typically begin two hours

after adults.

Neuroscientists say they are biologically predisposed to go to sleep around midnight and not feel

fully awake and engaged until between 9am and 10am.

Their body clock remains in this state until the age of around 21 for males, and 19 for females.”

The £4 million projects are being funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Education

Endowment Foundation. (EEF)

So see if you can get your school to start later. :)’ References: http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/subjects/currentevents.htm http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11148930/Teenagers-to-start-school-at-10am-in-Oxford-University-sleep-experiment.html

3 Trillion Trees, By: Sikander MYP 7 Recent studies found out that there are 3 trillion trees on Earth. More than seven times the number previously estimated, so scientists were shocked and astonished because of the rate humans are cutting down trees and burning forests. It is also estimated that if humans were to switch off power and electricity for 24 hours we would be able to reduce all the pollution humans have created in the past decade, so around 75% and also greatly decreasing the poisoned air in China and Japan by 67%. Now, since the world has about 3 trillion trees that means that they are 400 trees for everyone, but we reduce 197 trees per year since over 10 million trees are being cut down. There are 4 million trees being planted each year , yet we are still losing trees and can not plant enough. Scientist still enforce people to help save and conserve trees because in about 780 years the earth could be facing a mass extinction. Scientist’s are also concerned that humans could possibly be the most deadly thing even after the extinction of dinosaurs since in the past 320 years humans have completely wiped out space and species of animals, birds and reptiles. Over 520 animal species were recorded to be extinct caused by human activity. This is a real photo of a koala who has just realized that his home has been cut down

GAMING CORNER

REVIEWS

DragonBox2, iPad game, by Constantin PYP 1 This game is about a box. The box opens and locks. Two things are the same (pictures) as the others and we have to put them together. Then they get green and if we click on it then it disappears. We can’t move the box. This game was fun because it was easy. It is for six year olds. Half Life 2 Raising the crowbar, By Daniel MYP 9

Half Life 2 was originally released exclusively for PC way back in 2004. Back then, people had yet to get used to realistic physics emulation and other effects we take for granted in video games today. It was bundled with a service called Steam, created by Valve, the same dudes that made the game, as well as its predecessor. It was very popular on its release, but does it hold up today?

Yeah, it does. When it came out, it pioneered the digital distribution, which has caught on with the turn of the decade. It has pioneered the expansion of various engines. It pushed the envelope for the detail and graphics that people put into their games to this day. It's possibly one of the most influential games of all time.

A lot of games use the various ideas that Half Life 2 first popularized. Half Life 2 started the trend of using episodic format, which has carried into various new games, such as the new Resident Evil and the TellTale games series. Overall I think that Half Life 2 raised the bar for the gaming industry, and created an impact that is still felt today. It holds up today, and is definitely deserving of all of the praise that it gets to now.
