Enter the world of one of the 20thCentury’s most iconic figures -architect, designer, writer and artist LeCorbusier (1887-1965).

The Art of Architecture, the first majorexhibition of Le Corbusier’s life and workseen in Britain for more than 20 years, premieres in Liverpool in the dramaticcrypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

The exhibition gives a fascinating insightinto the career and influences of LeCorbusier– whether you are discoveringhis work for the first time or simplylooking for new views on an alreadyfamiliar subject.

A key figure in 20th Centuryarchitecture, the revolutionary designs ofLe Corbusier had a massive impact on theworld of architecture.

From high rise towers to furnituredesign, he used modern materials andengineering techniques to provide radicalyet practical solutions to modern urbanliving, which still evoke strong viewstoday.

Le Corbusier believed that art wasessential to architecture, and thisexhibition illustrates how this belief wasthe driving force behind his work.

His most important architectural projects, furniture and interior designs, his paintings, photographs, textiles, drawings and books can all be seen here, alongside previously unpublishedmaterial including original film footage by the architect, a large-scale muralpainting from his office andreconstructions of his architecturalmodels.

This unique collection reveals theinfluences behind his influential andoften controversial career anddemonstrates how his legacy continuesto shape our everyday environment tothis day.

Staging the UK premier of the exhibitionin Liverpool would not have beenpossible without the support of theLiverpool Culture Company. Le Corbusier–the Art of Architecture initiates a vibrantseason of architectural events thatinvites audiences to look at their urbanenvironment with new perspectives.

Outdoor projection on the east wall of George’s DockBuilding, Pier Head.

Terminus is a cinematic construction of the entireLiverpool dock complex as could have been witnessedfrom a journey on the Liverpool Overhead Railway(LOR) 1893-1957. A single, real time tracking shot at anelevation of 8m, takes the viewer along the length ofthe docks into the container port at the mouth of theRiver Mersey.

Through a dynamic exploration of what is, seen onlyfrom the architectural perspective of what might havebeen, the historic and now phantasmagoric viewpointof this industrial landscape exposes the spaces ofgeographic dislocation and makes the invisible visible. This work references the birth of cinema and Lumière’sfamous tracking shot filmed from the LOR in 1897.

Produced by Jump Ship Rat in association with Cities onthe Edge and FACT.

This new work will be unveiled as part of the LiverpoolBiennial on October 28 .
