OCTOBERFEST 2009 A SUCCESS!

Views from atop of the slide and on top the cooler in our driveway.

One picture could not capture the overall success of this event. The attrac-tions, enjoyed by everyone, featured a gi-ant slide, an inflated castle and a Spider-man house. The Octoberfest committee chaired by Sharon Haugh shared ideas and experience, to develop a diversified menu and ways to best utilize the yard. The key ingredients in preparing for this event were cooperation and a willingness to work hard. When the site was ready, many thousands of people enjoyed the efforts of our mem-bers. Our volunteers provided a smooth,

trouble free day and demonstrated a true spirit of Brother and Sisterhood. It cannot be disputed that this event was an over-whelming success. This year the clean-up crew deserves special recognition for turn-ing a gruesome task into a pleasurable ex-perience. When no picture or words can de-scribe something good, it is evident that we are talking about a phenomenon which oc-curs when people work together. I describe it as something that is greater than the sum of all of its parts.

EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE by Carol McMenamy A great big THANK YOU goes out to all the volunteers who helped out with Octoberfest. Sharon Haugh and her committee did a great job of organizing the successful event. Our second Annual Halloween Costume Party will be held on October 31st. Music will be provided by DJ Joe Oz. Wear your spookiest, crazi-est, cutest or original costume, and you might win a prize. Don't forget your Halloween theme covered dish! The room dividers have been purchased and will be installed by print time. Thank you to The Ladies Auxiliary and Pop Warner for their generous donations. Also thank you to Nancy DeVito, Mike Travisano and The Veteran's committee for their hard work with the pizza fund raiser. If you need some relaxation, be sure to stop by the lodge Wednesday morning at 10. We have a licensed Yoga instructor teaching a one hour class. No equipment required. One hour class is just $8.00. Have you had a chance to check out the Wii bowl-ing tournament? It's not to late to join. Before you settle on a bar stool to watch Monday Night Foot-ball, enjoy some good food and fun competition. If you prefer dancing, don't forget to check out Thurs-day night line dancing.

Bar Stool Donations Needed An effort is being made to replace the worn out bar stools in the grille room. Several members identified the need for the replacement but realized that this project is not included in the current budget. The project is therefore moving forward on a donation basis without the use of lodge funds. The goal is to pur-chase twenty eight new stools at a cost of $80 each. A “Donated By” name plate can be included on each stool. To get your name on a bar stool and improve the look and comfort of the grille room, send a check with your $80 dona-tion to Pt. Pleasant Lodge 1698, and note on the check that the money is for the bar stool fund. Of course cash donations are also welcome. Please include your name as you would like it included on the name plate. Any questions, contact Bob Kierstead.

by Nancy DeVito On Monday September 7, 2009 at our Elks lodge was a guest instructor Cato Larsen all the way from Norway. He was grateful for the warm welcome of the Elks Jersey girl line dancers. Those who were-n’t there missed a great opportunity to enjoy the teach-ings from an instructor from another country. It was a great time and fun learning experience. I’d like to thank Bob Kierstead for setting up the room it was greatly appreciated. A special thanks to Dave DeVito for giving his day up on the beach to help me put out a small buffet. Food was great and so was the com-pany. I would like to thank Linda Alexandrou, Shirley Ferrier and Carol Harley for their hard work in keeping the dancing successful. I don’t think anyone realizes the time they put into making this dancing successful. Way to go girls. Please stop up and check out the dancing it’s not just country anymore. It’s a lot of fun, a great workout and best of all a group of friends having a night out. Thank you.

Thank You All by, Joe Miller Thank you to Veterans Committee Chair-man Mike Travisano for spearheading the effort to raise money for folding doors that were purchased to create multiple meeting areas in the lodge room. The same sincere thank you is extended to Nancy DeVito for her fund raising efforts, to the Ladies Auxiliary and Pop Warner for their donations and support, and to all of the many members and friends who worked and donated in support of our cause. The doors have been shipped to our Lodge and arrangements are being made for an end of September installation. So by the time we all re-ceive this October Antler, the project should be completed. Again, thank you all for a job well done.

This was truly a joint lodge effort, but I find it necessary to offer my heartfelt thanks the count-less hours and energy expended by Bob Haugh, Ron Panuska and Bob Kierstead’s house committee. I hope you all had a great time. I know I did! THANK YOU ALL! Sharon Haugh

What’s Prettier Than Freckles? An elderly woman and her young grandson, whose face was sprinkled with bright freckles, spent the day at the Elk’s Ocktoberfest. Lots of children were waiting in line to get their cheeks painted by Antsy the clown who was decorating them with panther paws. “You’ve got so many freckles, there’s no place to paint!” a girl in the line said to the little fellow. Embarrassed, the boy dropped his head. His grandmother knelt down next to him “I love your freckles. When I was a little girl I always wanted freckles.” she said, while tracing her finger across his cheek. “Freckles are beautiful.” The boy looked up. “Really?” “Of course,” said the grandmother. “Why, just name me one thing that’s prettier than freckles.” The boy thought for a moment, peered intensely into his grandma’s face and softly whispered, “Wrinkles.”

LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS

by Diana Cavaliere

Hi Ladies: Our first meeting was September 8th at 8PM we had a good turnout for our first meeting, but we always like to have a large group so maybe if you couldn’t join us this meeting we will see you for the next. THE LADIES AUXILIARY TO THE RESCUE

I want to thank all the ladies who came out to help at the Seafood Festival, and donated their time. This was another “First” for me and I had no idea when we needed the help the most. Although many of you came in the AM the real action started after 4PM. We wound up swamped and short handed at our booth because many of our Ladies Auxiliary members went to help man the Beer con-cession, which was left short handed and in dire need of help. Our Ladies carded and sold tickets like crazy, they also helped out in the food depart-ment as well. Thank you ladies for another job well done.

We are still selling 300 club Raffles by the month for October & November it will cost $10.00 per month. If you haven’t purchased your “300 Club Raffle Ticket” It’s still the best value at the Jersey Shore with still more chances to win. Call Ann Kaufman (732) 295-1604 or Camille Cimino (732) 899-6168, They will be happy to hear from you. Our members came in with the most beau-tiful Afghans and Baby Blankets they made over the summer which we will be raffling off at the Gold Party on Friday, October 9th from 6 to 9 PM. Gather up all your old, unwanted or broken gold Jewelry and unwanted silver items that you don’t want to polish anymore, and get cash on the spot. Refreshments will be served please call Dee Dalik (732) 295-8370 if you are planning on coming as we need a head count for the refreshment. Our “White Elephant Sale” took place on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7PM; all who attended had a lot of fun. At our next meeting on Tuesday, October 13th at 8 PM we will be initiating two new mem-bers into our club, Marilyn Capone and Lily Kacarevic. Elk of the Month Michael Adamo

by, Carol McMenamy While we all loving refer to Gus Adamo as “Godfather”, our elk of the month for October refers to him as grandfather. Michael is a fairly new member of our lodge and an electrician by trade. In the couple of years of his membership he has offered his electrical expertise in many ways. He did a great job on the lighting for our Veterans Park, along with various electrical jobs in the lodge itself. The assistance Michael offers our lodge isn’t limited to his electrical expertise. He helped set up on Saturday Am for the Octoberfest.. Stayed to assist with the food… and helped clean up afterwards. He is always willing to lend a hand where needed. Thank you Michael.

Congratulations Michael!
