OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2012 News Briefs Brief items from the past months related to public art in Florida

from the Florida Association of Public Art Professionals (FAPAP)

NATIONAL

All members of the Public Art Network (PAN) are encouraged for vote for Elayna Toby Singer of West Palm

Beach to represent Florida on the PAN Council. It has been several years since we’ve had a Floridian on the

Council. Ballots will be online by Friday at: http://www.artsusa.org/networks/public_art_network/council.asp

The next phase of this project which closed in October will be to extend the 30 by 100 foot demonstration area

to the majority of the banks of Torry Island’s lagoon and to develop curriculum related to the project that

incorporates environmental science, art and social studies.

BOYNTON BEACH

1) The sculpted tile mural, “Umbrella Sage”, concept by Leo Urban was created, fabricated and installed in

September by public artist Tracy Rosof-Petersen (EarthArtists Clay Studio of Lake Worth) on the Sibia

Medical Center, 709 S Federal Hwy, Boynton Beach. This public art project is the developer’s

contribution to the City’s public art ordinance.

2) Due to Hurricane Sandy the October 26 release of the Jelly Fish Drift release is postponed to

November 2, 2012.

This project will assist the City to market its new Brand Promise and statement, “Breeze into Boynton

Beach, America’s Gateway to the Gulfstream.”

The message the Jellyfish Drift Project delivers is to treasure the Ocean, keep it clean and reduce the

trash that washes up on our beaches. One of the projects partners, Surfrider Foundation of Palm Beach

County, joins this effort with their RAP message which stands for Rise Above Plastic. Plastic bags in the

ocean resemble jelly fish and therein the connection with the Jellyfish Drift Project.

The Jellyfish Drift Project consists of Paulo’s Jellyfish painted brushed metal art panel attached to a light

weight bamboo raft and set adrift in the Gulf Stream just off Boynton Beach. The safely marked JellyFish

art panel will drift northbound for a lucky beachcomber to discover. Once found, there is contact

information inscribed on the back of the panel to follow.

This project will launch in collaboration with the City’s Art in Public Places Program, Recreation and

Parks Department, Economic Development Department, Go Green Boynton, Surfrider Foundation of

Palm Beach County, Jupiter Pointe Paddling, Crowd Control Surf Co., Nomad Surf Shop, Jupiter

Kiteboarding, Waves End Watercraft, Share the Stoke Foundation and generous public and business

donations.

3) In preparation for the upcoming February 8 - 10, 2013 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium

exhibit. To see the kinetic artwork visit http://intlkineticartevent.org/?page_id=148 Outdoor Exhibit |
