BIBLE STUDIES

Through the Ezer study for women and The Measure of a Man small group study for men, our church has united this fall in seeking God’s purpose for us as individuals of His creation and helped us to focus on our greater mission of sharing the Gospel of Christ. Pray with me for those participating in these studies as well as for the new fall Journey classes beginning soon, that the study of God’s Word would have a powerful and life-changing impact.

From the pulpit we started the fall with an invitation from Jesus to imitate His attitudes, words and actions. We called our sermon series "Marks of a Disciple." But as we have learned to imitate Him, we've discovered that the process of becoming a disciple involves more than just the gradual transformation of our hearts, thinking, and actions. It includes a closer connection and deeper commitment to the body of Christ. It compels us to love those within the Taylors family as we long for those apart from Christ to join it.

Now, as fall turns to winter, I'm asking the Father to usher in a new season of deeper discipleship here at Taylors and expand our reach to the lost, both locally and globally. This page and the entire newsletter are designed to point to what God is doing here and what remains ahead. As we close out our sermon series at the end of November, we do so with gratitude for how God has moved, but also with an expectant hope that our best days of mission and ministry are ahead. Take advantage of every opportunity at Taylors this season to be changed and to be a tool to change others. This is what Jesus has invited His followers to do in Greenville, just as He did to those fishermen by the Sea of Galilee 2000 years ago. He changed the world with them as they followed Him, imitated Him and invested in others. He'll continue to change the world through us if we humbly and passionately do the same. — Paul

Joint Worship with Brushy Creek Baptist ChurchSUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 6 PM

In response to an invitation from Pastor Ralph Carter, Taylors FBC will join together in worship with our brothers and sisters at BCBC. Combined choirs and orchestras from the two churches will lead worship, Pastor Paul will bring the message, and then we’ll share in a time of fellowship immediately following the service. In addition, the college and student ministries of the two churches will worship together during that time. The heart of the Gospel is the cooperative spirit of churches, working together to advance and make known the name of Jesus. Plan to be a part of this opportunity to celebrate together in worship, unified by Christ and a commitment to the Kingdom of God. Childcare provided for birth-preschool.

A New Gospel Ministry and MissionAs many of you know, two of our ministers here at Taylors have finalized a decision to pursue an extraordinary calling. Chris Causey and his wife, Ginny, and Jason Hodges and his wife, Rachel, have been called by God to plant a church together in a major urban city in the United States. see page eight

ONE DAY: Sunday, November 17 One God… One Church… One Mission…

One Man … One City… One People… YOU? “One Day” is to be a day of worship, celebrating God for defining our mission within our nation to partner with two strategic cities to plant churches, and among all nations as we engage two unreached and unengaged people groups overseas.

We laid our plans before Him, literally at times putting them in the middle of the table and praying for His will to be done. We have been desperate for His direction, that we might follow and fulfill His purposes, and He has shown Himself faithful every time.

We started by looking at the entire world and asking God “where?” As we prayed and began to follow His direction, He narrowed our focus to particular regions of the world, and particular cities within our nation. He then narrowed our focus more to people groups, teams, and church planters that we might come alongside to partner with for the sake of the Gospel. God moved us from praying for geography to praying for people. He moved us from going to places to going to make disciples of all nations (peoples). And we rejoice! We believe God has given us a task that is greater than Taylors, but one that He desires to work through Taylors FBC to fulfill. We are expectant of great things.

And yet, we are praying for more. We are now asking God to give us boldness to make disciples here among our neighbors, in the midst of those whom God has put into our paths each day. My prayer is that as we go to the unreached nations and unreached cities within our nation, we will not stop short, but will ask God to open our eyes to identify who He has put into our lives for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Who has God placed in your path to hear, believe, and then become saved through your testifying of Jesus the Christ?

November 17 will be a day of celebration and worship, but also a day of commitment – a time for you to respond to God and His calling to be a part of His mission through Taylors among your neighbors, our nation, and among all nations.

May we stand side-by-side together for the sake of the Gospel, going and making disciples, that “all the peoples may praise you, O God, and the nations be glad and sing for joy!” Psalm 67:3-4

College Ministry Mission FocusThe college ministry is adopting an unreached people group this year, the “K” people group (unnamed for security purposes). They are partnering with local ministries to work with them this semester here in Greenville in addition to planning specific mission trips to Nashville, Tennessee, and Central Asia to impact this people group for Christ.

The Loft worked side-by-side with many Taylors FBC senior adult men to reach out during orientation at local college campuses. Besides helping with move-in day for freshmen and their families, they hosted an Ice Cream Concert, a BSU After Party, and other events to reach the hundreds of college students. This semester over ninety students have visited Taylors FBC!

College Student Serves at Tanalian Bible Camp by Tucker MacDonald, NGU Student & Missionary to Alaska

My prayer before leaving for the Alaskan Mission trip was for God to do great things and work in the lives of all attending campers. Like I so often do, I underestimated the power and ability of the Almighty God. He took a group of Carolina college/high school kids and used them to further His kingdom all the way in Alaska! I expected God to move in the campers' lives, and I believe He did. What I didn't expect was how much He would move in mine.

Among the highlights of this trip, I had the honor of meeting and working with a diverse group of people from all over the country, including a man named Wall-E, a fun, seventy-year-old Southern California native. Our mentality was to work ‘til the sun goes down, which in Alaska means ‘til the job is finished. In addition to construction, I was a counselor for the high school and junior high school camps. It was encouraging to see college kids from all over the world willingly trade their summer “free” time to serve and minister.

I saw God work in lots of great ways, but nothing at all made me happier than watching two of my campers give their lives

over to Christ. I have never experienced anything like that before and it gives me chills just thinking about it. A discussion that started with Nerf guns ended with a camper’s salvation through Jesus. As we sat down by a trail and I started talking, it was like I wasn't even speaking, but rather like God was speaking through me. I can't even remember what I said, but I know I've never talked like that before. I'll never forget us both being in tears by the end of his prayer. My experience in Alaska made me realize the power of God’s Word and the importance of personal Bible study, not only to have a better personal understanding, but to accurately and effectively explain Christianity to others.

After an exciting three weeks of camp, the bittersweet time came to leave. I had seen God work in many lives, and had the privilege of seeing His handiwork from the top of Tanalian Mountain. I wanted to stay, but missed my family. While the mission trip has ended, the mission has not. It's easy to fall back into our daily routines; I know I'm guilty of it. Why does it seem easier to talk about Jesus in Alaska, but so difficult in our hometown?

Through the experiences on this trip, my faith and understanding of the Gospel grew much stronger. Now, my confidence in talking to others about the Gospel increases every time I get the chance to share it.

Taylors FBC Great Commission Leadership TeamGod has blessed us this year, not only directing our steps, but calling together our Great Commission Leadership Team who will work side by side with the Missions Ministry to equip and send the members of Taylors to make disciples among our neighbors, our nation, and among all nations. We began praying for this team shortly after my arrival at Taylors. As God placed people into my life, I would write down their names and begin praying for them, especially as it concerned the forming of this team. As the team’s structure developed, we immediately recognized the need for a Prayer Coordinator. We called Lin Cunningham and she responded, serving in that role from the very beginning. As the additional tasks became more clear, we called others to join. It was amazing to see the common thread in each conversation as I shared the invitation to join this team. During our conversations almost every person would state, “I have felt God preparing me for something like this and I have been waiting.” The phrase, “for such a time as this” has become common in Missions Ministry at Taylors. I believe He has called each of these members to their specific roles, to lead in equipping and sending Taylors to make disciples of all peoples. I am excited to work alongside them for the sake of the Gospel am and expectant of great things from God! — Jeremy

Taylors FBC Mission Team Shares The Gospel in Nicaragua A group of seven XYZ members from Taylors FBC traveled to Central America in July as a part of Chosen Children Ministries whose mission is to share God’s love and the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the people of Nicaragua. The team went to be a blessing, but returned being blessed. Among the life-changing experiences, Lea and Nancy shared in a team member leading a 106 year old lady to accept Christ as Savior, Alec led a Nicaraguan professor in the sinner’s prayer, Queenie and Ginna ministered to seventy-five in their nurse’s clinic, Dot and Sara led the distribution of food and 600 pillowcase dresses, other clothing and school supplies. As they ministered to the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the people there, they grew their spiritual disciplines of prayer, faith and abilities in Christian service which can be used at our mission field here at home.

They feed approximately twenty-five people by packing and delivering meals each Wednesday afternoon. In 1978 the Southern Baptist Convention held the first World Hunger Day. The purpose of this day was to educate people on the plight of hunger throughout the world and encourage them to donate money to feed the hungry. Every penny collected goes toward this purpose. Children's Choir For Grades 1-5 On October 2 Taylors Children’s Choirs will begin preparing for the presentation of a brand new Christmas musical, We Three Spies. The combination of wonderful music, a spy theme, and a despicable character named Ms. King will provide a unique background for sharing the story of Christmas. Shining through it all is the message that God came down to earth as Emmanuel (God with us) and He is still with us today as we seek to love and serve Him.

We have had a great time at Make a Difference and M&M on Wednesday nights so far! We have heard from missionaries both locally and around the globe and have had the

opportunity to fulfill needs for those in Greenville, Uganda, and Honduras. We have partnered with Taylors missionaries including the Travis Kerns family and learned more about how they are making a difference. We still need your help to raise money for Epsi and Ermiyas, the children we support through Compassion International. By bringing in cardboard, mixed paper (cereal boxes, soda can boxes, snack item boxes, magazines, and newspaper), copier paper, and empty soda cans, you are providing Epsi and Ermiyas with food, water, education, medical help, and the chance to learn about Jesus. Orphan Sunday — November 3Orphan Sunday is the annual day for churches to bring the plight of orphans around the world into focus. On this day we are faced with the fact that millions of children around the world are orphaned and are in desperate need. The reality for these children, however, doesn’t exist merely one day a year. It exists every minute of every day as they struggle to survive without parents. An even more harsh reality is that all Christians are called to care for these children. Approximately nineteen Christians exist for every orphaned child, yet millions remain. James 1:25 says But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it- he will be blessed in what he does. It is our desire that on this Orphan Sunday, you will not only hear the calling of God to care for the fatherless, but that you will make a decision to act. After all, we have all been adopted by God and caring for these children… the least of these, is a true reflection of His grace.

Everyone can make a difference. Mission 1:27, the orphan ministry of Taylors FBC, is an avenue for you to answer His call and get involved as well as connect with others who share a

Following His CallFor many years God has been at work in the hearts of Jason Hodges and Chris Causey regarding preaching, teaching, and leading. Since their days of seminary over ten years ago, these two young men have been dreaming, praying and asking God what He could potentially do with their lives individually and perhaps together. Now, these two gentlemen -- tied at the hip and the heart -- are ready to take this step of faith.

“My joy as pastor is to see how their different leadership and spiritual gifts complement each other, how their church home has affirmed them, and how the Holy Spirit has confirmed this calling through His leading.” - Pastor Paul

Chris and Ginny will not go directly to the field, but will enter a church planting residency program in Brandon, Mississippi by way of the invitation and leadership

of Pine Lake Church. Here, over several months, Chris will receive invaluable training in the nuts and bolts of healthy church planting and will transition to the new field in the spring or summer of 2014.

Jason and Rachel will continue to serve here at Taylors in the months ahead. Jason, as minister of Adults and Leadership Development, is helping us break new ground in the area of making disciples and building leaders. Please pray with the staff, the Personnel Committee, and Jason and Rachel as we seek the Lord's timing and wisdom as to how they can continue to serve us, yet begin to focus on the new work ahead.

As for our Student Ministry, we are grateful that Ricky Stark, Associate Minister of Students, will carry out plans for the students in 2013-2014. He is doing a phenomenal job and we are glad he is here to help us continue to shape and grow our Student Ministry in the days ahead.

Making Disciples…It is every Christian’s mission as given by Jesus Christ. Many times it seems difficult to be intentional in finding and/or sharing with people who may not know Christ as Savior. To find out more on how we all can be intentional about seeing new followers of Jesus, join us as we discuss and train people in Reaching People for Christ.

Some information we will share involves MY HOPE with Billy Graham. This emphasis is designed to help us identify potential friends and family to whom we can share the love of Christ. It culminates around Billy Graham’s last message to be shared via television and live streaming this November.

Making disciples is not an event as much as it is a calling to live out every day. Please join us on one of these two Wednesday evenings, October 23 or 30, from 7:30-8:45 pm in room B128. — Doug Mize, Jeremy Thompson, & Jason Hodges

My Hope with Billy GrahamTaylors FBC will host prayer meetings prior to the November event called My HOPE with Billy Graham. Comprised of pastors and lay leaders from participating churches in the Upstate and nearby, the participants will gather for the purpose of prayer in preparation for the upcoming My Hope event. My Hope is an intentional outreach challenging all of us to make authentic relationships with those around us and may include witnessing Billy Graham’s last sermon which will be broadcast sometime this November. This date corresponds with Dr. Graham’s ninety-fifth birthday, and is a project that plans to televise his last sermon. We will meet in the Chapel to pray from 10-11 am for four consecutive weeks: Thursdays, October 10, 17, 24, and 31

Grief Support for SpousesGrief Support consists of two eight-week courses offered at Taylors FBC that provide encouragement and support for those who have lost a spouse. Grief Support I is for those coping with grief during the first or second year of losing a spouse. For those who have completed Grief Support I, Grief Support II is offered to help you move through the grief process and accept your “new” life.

Grief Support for ParentsThis faith-based group is designed to help parents who are grieving the loss of a child. If you are a grieving parent, we encourage you to join this grief recovery support group to aid in your healing. It does not matter how long ago your loss occurred; grief support groups are for people at all stages of the grieving process.

We will have a light snack, a time of sharing and a devotional. It's in the sharing and the group's caring for each other that the healing can be accomplished.

Our Weekend SpeakerWilliam Wilson left his home state of North Carolina in 1992 to study at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he received an MDiv (1996) and a PhD in New Testament (2002). He was actively involved in youth ministry for over

a decade and served as the Youth Minister at Burton Hill Baptist Church in Fort Worth from 1995 to 2004.

Teaching opportunities at Southwestern and Oklahoma Baptist University deepened William’s desire to expound the Scriptures and articulate the Christian worldview in a classroom setting.

From 2005-2011 William has served as Visiting Professor of Christian Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. William’s course offerings provided a systematic introduction to biblical studies and the Christian worldview for a broad range of students at one of China’s most prestigious universities.

William now serves as Associate Professor of New Testament at Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta.

We Three SpiesDecember 15 | 6 pm | Taylors Children’s ChoirsGrab your trench coat and dark shades and go undercover to join the exciting Christmas mission of We Three Spies. Agents E, L and F are recruits with the CIK (Christmas Intelligence Kids), a covert group of spies who secretly bring Christmas cheer to the needy. But this year they're facing an especially difficult challenge: keeping Ms. Harriet King, a Scrooge-like landlord, from evicting them from their headquarters, confiscating donations, and cancelling their Christmas Nativity program. It takes a

little expert espionage and a lot of God's unconditional love for Ms. King to change

her tune as she finally joins the CIK and the entire town in a musical

celebration of the true meaning of Jesus' birth.
