EQAO Results (2016-2017)

Congratulations to our students, staff and parents for all of their hard work in preparing our students to show what they know!

Our Grade 3 results show above/par provincial averages in reading, writing and math and above school board averages in writing. For our participating students, all scored at a Level 2 or higher. For our Grade 6 learners, we had a number of students who were unable to participate and this affected the overall reporting. For the participating students, gains were achieved in all three areas and not one student achieved below a Level 2 in reading or writing! While we still have much work to do, we continue to be committed to providing a learning environment that is supportive and academic programs that challenge our students to demonstrate their abilities.

Individual reports will be sent home once we receive them.

Honour Roll Fairwood students continue to work hard to achieve excellent results! To be on the Academic Honour Roll, students must achieve an average in all subjects of 80% or higher. To be on the Learning Skills Honour Roll, students must achieve an Excellent in at least five of the six categories, with the other mark no lower than a G. Set some goals and remember to use your agenda to keep track of your assignments and work! Healthy Snacks/Lunches/Birthday Celebrations

Fairwood is an shellfish/nut/peanut safe school.

To support a safe and positive school for all, parents are asked to NOT send food containing shellfish, peanuts and nut related products to school with your child. Parents are asked to please consider healthy, nutritious snacks and birthday treats such as

fruit, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers instead of donuts, cakes and candy.

Math Facts Math is part of our everyday life! One of the most important ways that you can help your child with math is to encourage them to practise their math facts. Being able to quickly recall one’s math facts are important because they: form the building blocks for higher-level math concept; develop proportional reasoning; and build confidence in one’s math ability. Please see below for the basic Number Sense and Numeration expectations by grade from the Ontario Curriculum. Please know that these are END OF YEAR expectations which will be reported on in June. Math Basics ~ Number Sense Gr. 1 - adding and subtracting numbers to 20 Gr. 2 - adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with and without regrouping Gr. 3 - adding and subtracting three digit-numbers; one-digit multiplication (up to 7x7) and division (up to 49/7) Gr. 4 – adding and subtracting four-digit numbers; adding & subtracting decimals to tenths; one-digit multiplication (up to 9x9) and division (up to 81/9); multiply and divide two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers Gr. 5 – multiply two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers; divide three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers; multiply decimal numbers by 10, 100, 1000 & 10,000; divide decimal numbers by 10 & 100 Gr. 6 – multiply and divide four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers; add & subtract decimal numbers to thousandths; multiply and divide decimal numbers to tenths; relationships between fractions, decimals, percents and ratios Gr. 7 – divide whole numbers by fractions and decimal numbers to hundredths; multiply and divide decimal numbers to thousandths by one-digit whole numbers; use order of operations; add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators; add and subtract integers; relationships between fractions, decimals, percents and ratios Gr. 8 – add, subtract, multiply & divide fractions, operations with integers; exponents; multiply and divide decimal numbers by various powers of 10; square roots Please refer to the school agenda for a variety of websites to practice and build your child’s math facts!

Gradual Entry In supporting our students to be on time and ready for learning, we welcome them to Fairwood P.S. beginning at 8:05 a.m. Students have been asked to say good bye to their parents/guardians/caregivers at the school doors and make their way to their classrooms. Staff will be supervising hallways and classrooms, as well as supporting student independence as they organize and care for their items. A school bell will ring and music will begin to play as a signal for children to enter the building. For our Kindergarten students, we ask that parents wait with their children outside of the fenced in yard until a staff member comes to the school door to provide entry. Before this time, this space is leased by our daycare who provide supervision only to children who attend the daycare. Any students arriving late (after O’Canada has begun playing) will need to go the office for a late slip. Our breakfast program is also available between 8:05 – 8:19 a.m.to any student who has not had breakfast or is need of a “top-up”. ONLINE Student Safety On Wednesday October 11th students in Grades 3-8 will be participating in a social media workshop designed to support safe, smart, and kind online behaviours. In partnership with our School Council and Lakeside P.S., a parent session has also been planned during the evening from 6:00 – 7:00p.m. Please join us at Lakeside Public School to learn about:

6 key conversations to have with your kids about social media Making kids feel empowered to be SAFE online
