Pope Benedict XVI has approved a new translation of the Mass for use in English speaking countries. The United States will begin using the new translation on the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 27th, 2011.The Mass is not changing. What is changing is the English translation of the Mass from the origi-

nal Latin. The implementation of the new English translation of the Roman Missal provides an occasion for all

Catholics to reflect once again on the meaning and central significance of the Mass. It is a time to renewour own understanding and appreciation of the Eucharistic Liturgy.

Join us for these informative presentations, especially if youre curious or confused about the up-coming change to the Mass, and / or you want to learn more about the Mass- why we do things, and therich 2000 year tradition behind this central act of worship of the Roman Catholic Church.

    M A R K Y O U R C A L EN D A R !The Mass Changes Us! New translation of The Roman Missal The Mass

Wednesday evening 7pm October 19 & 26 in the church basement - Rogers HallWith Father William De Salvo

World Mission Sunday, or-ganized by the Propagation ofthe Faith, is a day set aside forCatholics worldwide to recom-mit themselves to the Church's

missionary activity throughprayer and sacrifice. In 2011,World Mission Sunday is cele-brated on October 23.Annually, World Mission Sun-day is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in October. Asdescribed by Pope John Paul II,World Mission Sunday is "animportant day in the life of theChurch because it teaches howto give: as an offering made toGod, in the Eucharistic celebra-tion and for all the missions ofthe world" (see RedemptorisMissio 81).

Every year the needs ofthe Catholic Church in the Mis-sions grow - as new diocesesare formed, as new seminariesare opened because of the

growing number of young menhearing Christ's call to followHim as priests, as areas devas-tated by war or natural disas-

ter are rebuilt, and as otherareas, long suppressed, areopening up to hear the mes-sage of Christ and His Church. That is why the involvementand commitment of Catholicsfrom around the world is sourgently needed. Offeringsfrom Catholics in the UnitedStates, on World Mission Sun-day and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to

the Propagation of the FaithworldwideMission dioceses - about

1,100 at this time - receive

regular annualassistance fromthe funds col-lected. In addi-tion, these mis-

sion diocesessubmit requeststo the Congrega-tion for the Evan-gelization of Peo-ples for assis-tance, amongother needs, for

catechetical pro-grams, seminaries, the work ofReligious Communities, forcommunication and transpor-tation needs, and for the build-ing of chapels, churches, or-phanages and schools. Theseneeds are matched with thefunds gathered in each year. The world's national directorsof the Propagation of the Faithvote on these requests, match-ing the funds available with

the greatest needs. Thesefunds are then distributed, intheir entirety, to mission dio-ceses throughout the world.

Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by nameand leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus histitle, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And Goddoes all of this so that the people will know that I am the LORD, and that there is none besidesme (Isaiah 45:6).

Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notionthat in God alone we find our grace andpeace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. Andin the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesars and to Godwhat is Gods. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
