oD operational technologyFor maximum efficiency, OD’s advancements in Operational Technology provide you with better service, increased access to real-time information, cost reduction, fuel-efficient cost savings and the comfort of knowing your shipments are moving as safely as possible.

RAdIO FREquENCY IdENTIFICATION (RFId)an automated arrival / dispatch systemthat monitors equipment location and freight movement throughout the od system. radio frequency identification tags are installed on all our equipment. tag readers, mounted at the entrance to our facilities, automatically record arrivals and

departures and post them to our mainframe computer. this provides a more accurate accounting of the movement and location of our equipment and assistsus in shipment planning.

dOCKYARd MANAGEMENT (dYM) SYSTEM displays the status of any shipment moving throughout the od system at any given time. this is done with the use of bar code reading computers mounted on our dock doors, as well as onboard computers in our switching tractors for yard assignments. When a shipment is loaded or unloaded, the shipment’s status is automatically updated throughout the od system in real time.

HANdHELd COMPuTERSCarried by P&d drivers which enable them to capture real-time information during pickups and deliveries, including the number and weight of pieces, as well asorigin and destination zip codes. timely pickup information allows for increased direct loading, as well as scheduling of line-haul power to ensure the best service possible.

THE dESCARTES SYSTEM allows consolidation and swapping of routes. this helps us improve productivity and determine what staffing is needed and provides much more detailed routing. this system also allows us to do the following: determine what freight needs to be worked first and in what door to load to maximize reduced transit times; increase P&d efficiency to reduce costs; and map rendering so that custom deliveries are planned properly.

dECK TRAILERSMoveable load bars used to create multiple levels inside the trailer. these additionallevelscanholdupto2,200lbs.per skid. this system allows us to better protect freight from any possible damage. We are also able to load the trailers more efficiently, which in turn lowers our costs, ultimately saving the customer money.

GARVEY GuNS Used to individually mark all cartons with the same customer pro number to ensure the freight arrives at its intended destination. the garvey Pro helps to prevent misdirected freight in the event that the shipper’s label falls off or shrink wrap becomes loose andhelps to protect the shipper’s product.

AIR bAGSUsed to help cushion freight from any possible damage. these air bags are inflated as needed by compressors located at the service centers. they are placed around the shipments for added protection. air bags are used in conjunction with the deck trailers, providing shipments with a safer and more secure ride.

the Quality Management Process is neither an afterthought nor a separate or stand-alone function at old dominion. We have integrated it into the way we operate our business. our Vision, Mission, Values and success elements are incorporated intothe Foundation of success model. the Vision depicts what we aspire to be, followed by the Mission statement of what we do to achieve this vision. the success elements are portrayed within the five pillars of old dominion’s Quality Management Process. the added value, external and internal, customers receive is represented by our Values.

the Foundation of success model is the basis of the planning and management process. each of the success elements is “owned” and led by an officer of the company. sub-plans for improving work processes, which drive the success elements, are created and deployed at all levels within the company.

CuSTOMER FOCuS the pillar of CUstoMer FoCUs represents key functions we emphasize to satisfy customer needs. Marketing and sales are the ways in which we listen to the specific needs of our customers, and determine what we must do to satisfy those needs. best-in-Class service, Claim Free handling, accurate billing and Cost-effective Pricing represent the four primary and universal needs of our customers.

TOTAL INVOLVEMENT the pillar of totaL inVoLVeMent might be termed our “people” pillar. it is through people, old dominion’s most

valuable asset, that we focus on the needs of our customer. internal and external communications keep everyone informed of what’s going on and what each person needs to do to satisfy our customers. old dominion’s safety Program is one of the best in the industry. our in-house driver training school allows us to develop safety-consciousdrivers and to promote from within. it is through communications, and our family atmosphere, that our company remains Union Free. We are dedicatedto promoting from within through opportunities on all levels in our company.

MEASuREMENT the pillar of MeasUreMent tells us if our improvements are working in our audit process andif we are accomplishing our objectives. all employeesare held accountable for satisfying internal and external customer needs. SYSTEMATIC SuPPORTthe systeMatiC sUPPort pillar represents the

elements which are provided primarily by and through effective management to the organization. Financial stability is the cement that binds all the elements that build the Foundation of success. through equipment maintenance and replacement, we operate one of the newest and most dependable fleets in the industry. We are continuously updating our facilities to sustain growth and provide a premier service. We recognize the need to continueour development of employees through an ongoing educational process. the focus on information systems technology provides customers with necessary information, electronically, to properly manage our link in their total logistics process, in addition to assisting in the efficient movement of their goods.

CONTINuOuS IMPROVEMENTthe Quality Management Process is summarized with the ContinUoUs iMProVeMent pillar. We must never be satisfied with status quo. We continuously strive to improve customer service, employee relations and labor efficiency. We believethat the people who do the work, in conjunction with those who manage it, are best qualified to improve their work process. through team-based problem solving and the planning process, we accomplish continuous improvement. as a result, old dominion extends to its customers innovation, reliability, courtesy, responsiveness, professionalism and ethics in doing business. old dominion is proud of the Quality Management Process which continues to pave the way for better LtL freight service and in understanding the needs of our customers.
